Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland!
Greenland is currently an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark. We are Danish citizens but our dream is full independence.
We, most emphatically, DO NOT want to become another, abused, neglected overseas territory of the US. The idea that you can just send someone in here with a bunch of money and we’d sell our country, is ludicrous. All we have to do is to see how the US has, and is treating its indigenous populations in Alaska and in the continental US. We have no illusions about being treated any differently under US rule.
Greenland has formally been a territory of Denmark since 1721, long before the U.S. was even a sovereign country.
In 1979, Greenland got autonomy and a Home Rule government was elected. This was achieved, not through bloodshed and war but through peaceful negotiations. A situation pretty unique in a world where most colonized people have had to pay for any independence with their blood.
The authority of the Government of Greenland, and its parliament, was further expanded in 2009. The Greenland government and parliament make unilateral decisions on almost all domestic issues.
The members of the parliament are elected every four years through free and fully democratic elections. However, some areas are still determined by Denmark such as defense, foreign policy, citizenship, and the judiciary system. Denmark does not, however, enact or decide any laws in these areas that concern Greenland without consulting first with our own lawgivers.
The ties between Greenland and Denmark go way beyond history, politics or money. There are many deep family ties. Many people in Greenland have a Danish ancestor or ancestors or Danish family members.
Our society is modeled on the Scandinavian system of tax payed healthcare, education, social services etc. Currently Denmark subsidizes Greenland annually with the equivalent of around 600 million US dollars.
To think that the US would ever willingly pay even a fraction of that to Greenland is insanely naive. The US has never paid as much as a penny in rent to Greenland for the land they have annexed/occupied for their military bases.
The US already strategically controls Greenland, through their military base in the northern part of Greenland. There is no chance of the Russians or the Chinese coming in here with any military might.
No, trump isn’t worried about the Russians or the Chinese coming to Greenland. That is an excuse. No, he wants full control so he can strip mine Greenland with impunity of any and all mineral wealth, raping her blind and leaving nothing but death, destruction and pollution in his wake. This is what his MAGA goons mean when they talk about “development”.
We don’t want your system of government, we don’t want your model of society with its crazed gun culture, insane medical bills and costly education only for the rich. You have no freedoms that we don’t already have. Our society is not perfect, but yours is definitely not worthy of emulation.
We can’t do much if the orange menace wants to act like Hitler and annex/occupy us. Our population is small and not heavily armed.
But such an aggressive act towards a friendly, peaceful neighbor and ally, would certainly not win the US any new friends on the world stage. They would probably lose several of the ones they have now as other countries would justifiable fear a U.S. take over. Trump may think he’s joking or that it’s fun to threaten the sovereignty of other sovereign nations as he has done to Canada, Greenland, Panama and Mexico. But this kind of rhetoric is dangerous in a world as volatile as ours. To dismiss his comments is foolish, as he, like Hitler did, has plenty of followers who are ready and willing to carry out his wishes of a violent take over of territories not belonging to the US.
The US under trump would gain far more through peaceful coexistence and trade…and as our leaders in Greenland have stated: We are open for business, but we are definitely not for sale and I`ll fight for my country so bring it on anyhow you like..

    • @Fourbix

"They would gain so much more by peace talks and..."
Why would they? We are weak. In religion, in arms, economically. He doesn't has to ask you. See you've become complacent, thinking that our morals and ethics were a universal concept, and that history had a natural direction. But it's wrong.
Why would they negociate with weak states that can't even tell backwater russia to fuck off? Occupying you is nearly free and so much faster to get ressources and strategic locations.
Sovereign policies were declared as horrible to please daddy Germany who asphyxiated France, Italy, portugal and Greece. And, like all northern europeans, you sat there, fruiting from a system that benefited you. Ideologies of absolute individualism spread across Europe and now so many young guys feel like they have nothing to fight for; not that we have the industry or the military might to do so anyway.
I hope you'll like your stay in the US of A.

Thank you so much, I now know so much more about your marvelous country. I know a bit about the US bases and their history but that they do not pay any rent is shocking.
I have to say that the egotism and paranoia of the USA can be quite shocking, which I'm sure is rather insulting to many US citizens that just want us all to get on with our respective lives.

the US invading and seizing Greenland by military force, would mark a tectonic shift in world politics. It would essentially mark the end of the western world as we know it. Given that Denmark has been one of the most loyal and longest lasting ally of the US, nobody would trust the US as a reliable partner after such a move. It would force a lot of the smaller countries into unions or federations, spark a massive investment in military, a lot of countries would rush to acquire nuclear weapons, etc. etc.. The list of calamities is very long.

      to play devil's advocate...
if US got control of Greenland and its shorelines were indeed packed with rich and useful rare minerals...that means cheaper cost for thing like computer chips etc.
cheaper costs of chips and other such important resources means cheaper prices for companies to transport these things, which means cheaper prices for consumers which means lowered costs.
if the US got control of Canada, then the US could more effectively handle illegal immigration through the northern part of the country. it would also mean the same as with Greenland in terms of resources...more resources = cheaper prices for American citizens.
if the US got control of the Panama Canal, then the US could establish a military presence there and control any flow of migrants coming from South America into North America through Central America. they could also better control passage of goods and things from other foreign countries and exercise certain types of taxation. so, the control of the panama canal could theoretically mitigate what eventually becomes illegal immigration and gain a small economic bonus through taxes or whatever benefits the panama canal would offer...which obviously would bolster the american economy
not to mention that all of these offer strategic military benefits to the united states as a whole and gives it more leverage to make diplomatic deals, enforce sanctions, tariffs or whatever else...all of which would help the american economy.
      so yeah...
of course it's possible that these machinations of mine are just holistically impossible as i really just rattled off a bunch of suppositions that i think might happen just based off of common sense, and in reality would not result in anything from the acquisition of those things. but....i doubt benefits wouldn't come from control over more land since the ownership/access to land with an abundance of resources has always led to an increase in the power of the country that has said ownership/access.

The problem is when Trump says stupid things like this, it makes Russia, China etc. think that they can do whatever without consequences.. In a time like this where Russia and China are beating the war drums it's more important than ever to work together. Also Greenland is not Denmark's to sell, Greenland want independence which is not the same as being another state in America.. America has had access to Greenland since WW2 - Pituffik/Thule air base and other military instalations, so it has nothing to do with ''national security'' it's all about economics - a potential gas line going from America via Greenland to Europe, national resources, and shippings lanes in the arctic. And don't forget Trump's bruised ego when the Danish PM - Mette Frederiksen, said that it was an absurd idea that Trump/America wanted to buy Greenland in 2019, which it is, narcissists don't deal well with rejections...

As an American I think Europe is capable of defending itself and the 100000 American troops in Europe should be brought home and deployed as needed with congressional approval to the US Mexico and Canadian borders. The US should leave NATO. The US should end funding and weapons to Ukraine. The US should concentrate on doing good in the world and only use force when absolutely necessary. There are 700 million people who are hungry everyday. 2.2 billion people do not have clean water. These are solvable problems if the developed countries work together. The US should solve it's own healthcare issues then with other countries cooperation insure everyone in the world has at least basic healthcare starting with children.

A play for Greenland is nothing more than an Oligarchic Grift, and here’s why:
    1. U.S. Military is already big in Greenland.
The U.S. maintains a significant military presence in Greenland through Thule Air Base, which features a 3,700-meter runway and over 1 million square feet of infrastructure. The base is staffed by approximately 600 troops. Annually, the U.S. allocates $150 million for operations and maintenance, with an additional $300 million expansions in 2025, including a 500-meter runway extension and enhanced radar systems. Investments in next-generation radar and satellite communications have increased surveillance range by 30%, and new facilities are being built to accommodate more personnel and equipment. The U.S. also conducts biannual joint exercises with Danish and NATO forces and dedicates 10% of the defence budget to sustainability initiatives to protect Greenland’s fragile ecosystem. These numbers highlight Thule Air Base’s pivotal role in American Arctic defence strategy amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
    2. The Prize: Natural Resources
Greenland is exceptionally rich in natural resources, with climate change enhancing access to its vast deposits. It holds about 80% of the world’s untapped rare earth elements, essential for smartphones and electric vehicles, alongside 500 million tons of zinc, 200 million tons of lead, and 50 million ounces of gold. Oil and natural gas exploration is expanding, with reserves estimated at 1 billion barrels of oil and 200 billion cubic feet of natural gas. Melting ice has opened new maritime routes, reducing shipping distances by up to 40% and facilitating exports. Emerging energy sectors include geothermal with a potential capacity of 300 MW and offshore wind projects projected to generate 1,000 MW. Greenland has already attracted over $10 billion in foreign investment from multinational mining and energy companies, and the island plans to develop 25 mining projects by 2030. These numbers underscore Greenland’s pivotal role in the global economy, attracting industries eager to leverage its abundant and emerging natural resources.

Blinken's actions and rhetoric raise significant concerns about his role in shaping U.S. foreign policy and its impact on America's standing in the world. His involvement with the group of 51 experts who dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop story as Russian disinformation reflects a troubling pattern of politicized decision-making. Such actions undermine trust in leadership and can be perceived as contrary to the principles of transparency and accountability.
As someone who wore the uniform and took an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, his actions should align with those commitments. Unfortunately, his decisions seem to contribute to the challenges facing America's global influence and the preservation of our nation's values. Constructive leadership demands accountability, integrity, and a clear commitment to the American way of life.
