    gran interpretación del famoso solo de Corno. Felicitaciones al Trompista. Pero pésimo, pésimo camarógrafo que mientras el artista está interpretando el solo, anda con la cámara por otro lado. Evidencia que no conoce la obra o que ni siquiera tiene el sentido común de hacer la toma principal aunque sea de oídas y buscar a tientas de donde proviene el sonido del corno.

    I was sitting about 2 rows behind and three chairs over from Stransky at Interlochen in 1984. It was for the season finale performance of Les Préludes (Liszt). The second the first note of the horn solo came out I had chills - I had never heard a horn sound like he made it sound and it is with me now as it was so many years ago. He's a very gifted hornist.

    • @davidholloway6950
      @davidholloway6950 5 лет назад +12

      hughman55 it’s a common thing for principal horn players to give some sustained notes to an assistant during a long solo. They do this to keep their stamina up throughout the passage. I do agree that it is odd on Tchaikovsky 5 however. Never seen it done with this solo.

    • @skisunfb
      @skisunfb 5 лет назад +11

      It's really smart. In Vienna they have some pretty creative ways to share the load with assistants - and it works especially well because they all have the same concept of sound. Remember that they are all playing straight F Horns (no thumb valve to switch to Bb in the high range) and rest in appropriate places is crucial, especially with extremely challenging high parts in Strauss, Mahler etc.

    @Robert Gibson The skip from the E to the F# and from the D to the E can tend to be a bit unclean for a lot of horn players. Having the assistant/second play the lower note makes the solo much cleaner.

    That horn has the most beautiful tone. It appears different to most horns, is there something special about it? I would guess that it is an old instrument?

    • @joseojeda665
      @joseojeda665 Год назад +3

      It's a Vienna horn, used only by Viennese orchestras, and yes, it has the perfect horn tone, they are single horns in F, although they use crooks that can be changed to change the pitch of the instrument, as in natural horns. The valve system is also different from other horns, as they use double piston valves, which make the air flow without interruptions, making a direct sound and a very beautiful legato, but these valves were discarded everywhere else in the world because they respond slower than rotary or piston valves. Although they haven't received any major changes since valves were added to natural horns, there are modern manufacturers producing them, Yamaha and Jungwirth being the most prominent today.

He thinks we want to see their faces and has no idea the real interest lies in what they're doing with their instruments. • @Fhorn5114
      @Fhorn5114 7 лет назад +7

      Allegra Pearce those are pistons. it's not a French horn, it's called a Vienna horn. That double piston design was the first design for valved horns.

    • @aidanchristensen1581
      @aidanchristensen1581 5 лет назад +1

      yes, it is in fact a Vienna horn, which are known as both the oldest, but also most tonefully beautiful horns ever. the design of the valves is that of a double piston, and the 90 degree turns used in the piston to change air flow provide for a smoother slur and sound quality. they also still keep the f crook, a remnant of natural horns, and the thickness of the walls of the instrument make it so that the sound produce comes almost solely from the vibrating air column. this gives a very pure, though lighter tone.

    • @RazorSharpChannel
      @RazorSharpChannel 5 лет назад

      @@aidanchristensen1581 Do you think they're just a novelty, or have advantages of rotary valves for certain pieces?

    • @aidanchristensen1581
      @aidanchristensen1581 5 лет назад +2

      @@RazorSharpChannel i have not personally played one, though as i understand it, the articulation of the valves is slower than those of a rotary valved horn, though it provides for a smoother legato sound as well as exceptional slurring capacity. As for their novelty, they are pretty much the only horns used in Austria, and are sometimes used elsewhere in Europe. However, in America i think it is generally considered a novelty, though it has the exact same capabilities as a normal double horn.
      Edit: The only real issue with these horns is actually finding one on the market, as well as their price, which can often be above 8 to 10 thousand USD
