Guys Glenn Hansard is playing the part of the guitarist in this movie, he's the lead singer of The Frames and won an Oscar for Once. I'm amazed you guys didn't realise that he's the most successful person who came from this film. Also Dublin is the Capital of The Republic of Ireland it's not part of Northern Ireland.
our English teacher showed this to us in class, we studied The Commitments, and he said he was impressed with your critic, so good job, thank you for the video!
@OffTheShelfReviews yeah but it's not lol, you suck bollocks. The IRA could blow up half of London and most Brits will say this kinda sㅐㅣㅜㅌ like it's cute. Fuㄷk yㅇu. People died over this.
Yes it is quite annoying to hear the most ignorant remarks coming, I have to say, from British people regarding Ireland. Nobody else in Europe ever speaks about Ireland with such absolute ignorance. It's staggering for Irish people to hear such things, and then when they correct those responsible they are usually met with more of the same, suggesting Irish people are too sensitive and a bit silly for simply stating their identity. I can only conclude, it must be compulsory in British schools to know almost nothing about the country next to them, and to just assume it's of no importance and speak of it as if is some kind of backyard that might belong to Britain. If was to speak about London or Birmingham in the context of a film saying they were cities in France, Holland or even Scotland, would I be taken seriously?
@mikki3562 I'm Irish and worked in an English school. They completely ignore Irelands existence in the curriculum. In English, geography and history class. A level History which is an elective does a module on N.I. but not many students choose this.
Maria Doyle Kennedy who played Natalie and who is a professional musician, was in Orphan Black and we get a throwback to her Commitments past with a great blues number in a seedy Irish bar.
I just bought ALAN PARKER's first film "MELODY" 1971 on an old cinema 16mm print. we are screening it Saturday on a movie projector from the 1970s with all the scratches and grain on it. this print is a bit faded so looks well good. its the BEE GEES songs in this one and alan wrote the film to the songs
Been mentioned before - I love you guys but it’s important whether Dublin is in Northern Ireland or not... it’s not. My Northern Irish wife has drilled that in to me ;p Might be worth a notation if not a re-upload? Great review though, love the film too!
He doesn't say "yes, but I am" to Natalie's question, just says "but I am the manager". There's a big difference, because in the second answer he he gives her nowhere to with that.
I was in Haight-Ashbury during the Summer of '67' and watched local bands become famous soon after. One of my cousins was married to a performer whose band never made it after 10 years, and another cousin who was a roadie who traveled with Carlos Santana. In Yuma, Az. I met Chrystal Gayle and our conversation was about bands playing the Southern Calif. Circuit, start to evolve, then to break up before they 'made it'. Sometimes, it was because the bands had personal relationship problems but most often other bands would lure one of the musicians away with promises of a better deal. Many would be musicians have inflated egos. The 'Commitments' is realistic. Sex, drugs and alcohol abuse are other temptations, which will destroy them. I never noticed they said 'Fuck' 169 times! My older sister who was a Sunday school teacher taught me only stupid people used foul language. However, when I joined the U.S. Marines, I had to swear especially when I gained rank because if I didn't, my subordinantes wouldn't believe I was serious.,
I have been thinking of all the reasons why I love this movie so much. In a prior comment it is because I have been loosely associated with various bands, some famous, some not. It is because I love almost all types of music, but this isn't it either. It is because of how fickle life can be. I've never been rich or famous or have associated much with them. In a way, I wouldn't want to if I had to play their silly games. A couple of times, I've been homeless, never more than three months and met people who had been rich but lost it for various reasons. I've known people who should have been well off for the rest of their lives but things happened beyond their control and are depending on Social Security. They weren't lying about their former lives. They had no great weaknesses either, not more than the rest of us. In the end, though is how you handle success or failure, did it change your heart, darken your soul? That is the poetry the author talked about.
This film is the best! My ex had the Barrytown books and then he lent them to me. The Snapper is awesome! The lady who played the Bernie character was in one of the star wars films and one other one I saw as well as Pulp Fiction. Her face is very distinctive. I read a few posts here saying some of these actors did other things so I won't repeat but great review :)
Thanks, I was trying to remember the name of the Irish movie about the guy's with the food truck "The Van". Iliked that film and want to watch it again. Great review, I love this movie.
I grew up watching this film on tv time and time again with my family, having not seen it for nearly twenty years I bought the bluray and watched it a couple of weeks ago and it brought back a lot of memories but I sold it on eBay because it just felt dated and I don’t need to hear them songs anymore. I enjoyed watching the new special features though and seeing what happened to all the actors.
Now then lads, Gary, Iain another amazing review as always!I've been subbed from the beginning & love your style I've recommend you to loads of friends work mates& will carry on doing. Please now you've done this musical could you review Blues Brothers & little shop of horrors?Or at least put them on your to do list. I'm struggling at the mo with work but when it picks up and more shops want there shop front spray painting I'll throw £100 towards the mighty cause that is Off The Shelf Reviews!! Rock on guys Danny C from Mansfield.
Can't belive yous reviewed this classic,,,I didn't even now thus was known much outside Ireland, now ya have to do the other Barry town films, The snapper and The van to complete the trilogy, the are fuckiing amazin,,,,,one thing, 'this is set in a poverty stricken part of northern Ireland in a part of Dublin'? WHAT??????LOL
Had to hunt that Teen Titans track. Thats awesome! Check out S.O.S. ruclips.net/video/A6ZBT4Rdly4/видео.html A great song used as propaganda for a cult. Thank you Off the Shelf and Red Letter Media
Lads you need to work on your geography. The film is set in Dublin, but Dublin is not in northern Ireland. It's kinda like saying the film is set in Scotland in the city of Liverpool lol Glad you liked the movie. You should check out The Snapper, another great Irish film set around the same time and place.
Fantastic film. Very good review. I think I've watched this about once a year since it came out. I've had a few of the tracks on my IPod forever. I've been to Dublin, and it is not the place from the film, but I went 20 years late. What does that mean? Fucked if I know, Terry
Never heard of this but it looks great and shot really well. I always have a problem with understanding the dialogue from these English/irish films, The Full Monty was one that escaped me because the accents are so thick.
There really not that bad tbh in full monty Eric, I take it your American ? I mean rob Carlyle is a scots man doing a Yorkshire accent. Are you sayin you needed sub titles for that film??!
I have no clue how not one but two adults from England could not know where Dublin is. I'm not offended, just genuinely astonished.

Also Dublin is the Capital of The Republic of Ireland it's not part of Northern Ireland.
SpeedBoost aah now what about Bronagh Gallagher who was in Pulp Fiction amongst other stuff
Andrew Strong was 15 when he sang those vocals! He already had a life lived in that voice
our English teacher showed this to us in class, we studied The Commitments, and he said he was impressed with your critic, so good job, thank you for the video!
Really enjoy hearing you blokes talk about great movies. Off the shelf reviews are films in and of themselves!
jaysus fellas - Dublin isnt in Northern Ireland like you say at 2.00!
Yeah sorry. Our geography is well shit lol :) - Iain
@OffTheShelfReviews yeah but it's not lol, you suck bollocks. The IRA could blow up half of London and most Brits will say this kinda sㅐㅣㅜㅌ like it's cute. Fuㄷk yㅇu. People died over this.
One of my best memories, growing up over here led to seeing this movie many times, great movie and a firm favourite. The music in it was fantastic.
Ah lads. Dublin is the Capital of the Republic.
Maria Doyle. ..OMG. ..back then I was in love espc when she sings to Jimmy. ..epic
She'll always be Mrs. S from "Orphan Black" to me. :)
Yeah Dublin ain’t in Northern Ireland boys you’ve probably inadvertently upset a lot of people lol
RyoQuinn .Films and I've been to Dublin. Very nice place.
@@Luvie1980 you haven't been Northside in Dublin trust me it's less nice

I love how you keep saying "the famous musician!" Lol, it's Wilson Pickett, you guys!
The Bernie girl was a pilot too in the Phantom menace at the start of the movie
Maria Doyle Kennedy who played Natalie and who is a professional musician, was in Orphan Black and we get a throwback to her Commitments past with a great blues number in a seedy Irish bar.
Great review guys, classic Irish film. Should review Adam and Paul, the snapper or intermission

The music in this movie is just so wonderful. This was such a great movie.
He doesn't say "yes, but I am" to Natalie's question, just says "but I am the manager". There's a big difference, because in the second answer he he gives her nowhere to with that.
The actress who played natelie, was in a load of English TV like the tudors and stuff
Maria also played Mrs. S in the cult series "Orphan Black".

Review&Brew you won't be disappointed, such a good film and very underrated
A top five film for me. Absolute must watch
I fuckin' thank you guys! True gem movie and great review as always. Good point about Joey The Lips, that Angel like.
While extremely different, this film always reminds me of This Is England, which would be awesome to hear you guys talk about
Silent Bob?
Thanks, I was trying to remember the name of the Irish movie about the guy's with the food truck "The Van". Iliked that film and want to watch it again. Great review, I love this movie.
"I saw you dance from the corner"
But who cares. Still probably my favourite "and I'm Garry" gag :)
Have fond memories of this from my youth. Am due a re-watch.
the facial expressions are an homage to Joe Cocker....
Lads, you should review the Snapper. Perhaps you have to be Irish to find it funny for as a Dub it's just hilarious.
I grew up watching this film on tv time and time again with my family, having not seen it for nearly twenty years I bought the bluray and watched it a couple of weeks ago and it brought back a lot of memories but I sold it on eBay because it just felt dated and I don’t need to hear them songs anymore. So upoliticallly correct it's amazing,,,I'm black and I'm proud, haha never would you hear a white man say that in a film these dayz
in the Roddy Doyle book he says "nㅣggㅌr" in that monologue.
Just a little correction for these two Englishmen: Dublin, Dublin in Ireland is not Northern Ireland.

Ava Langrin u
Awsome! Thanks for the review boys!
Film request - Killing Gunther
Great review. Please do Split Second starring Rutger Hauer and an awsome movie monster.
Dublin isn't in Northern Ireland, it's in the Republic. Great film but did you spot (the unfortunately late) Sean Hughes as the record producer?
One of my favorite movies.
Love the film, Agree with all said. My issue is so many rave about this film but do't give the bkack cats that created the music the time of day.
I gotta see this film!
Dublin in NI..?! 😮
Ha. Dublin is a poverty stricken part of Northern Ireland. Oh God a simple bit of general knowledge please.
