HI Thank you. I found I only needed to remove the one screw next to the motor to be able to get the old belt off and the new one on. Much easier than doing a whole tear down, face plate off and cassette assembly removal - like in most of the other videos on YT. Now my 740 works again. Superb. Greeting from England.
THANX! Your the man! I picked one of these decks up from goodwill in very nice shape and it had this exact issue. I Replaced the belt and it worked a charm! the belt size you need is 9 inch flat belt. i cleaned the smaller one with alcohol.
Thank you so much for documenting this!! I have the exact same problem. Once I get the right belt I will attempt fixing it. I just bought mine as "broken" for 10 bucks.
Glad I found this. I just picked up this exact model from a Goodwill sale, and that's exactly what it's doing. Good to know that it's something that relatively simple...
Got the new belt in this Saturday, and after about a half hour of trying to work in a really tight space, I finally got it in. Sure enough, it started working after that. I've made seven new tapes since then. I love the deck, but I'm still going to take it in to get the rollers replaced because one of them has hardened and it's causing a little flutter. I'm also going to make sure it's calibrated right.
I added a little cut of transparent tape to the gear, so the tiny rubber belt will have more grip. It functionates to lift the machine (head), and automatically plays the cassette tape.
very interesting- i have deck which plays for 1;5 seconds and then stops even though ff and rw still work. Bit scary thinking i'll need to take it all apart but thanks for explaining a new probable cause.
Wow thank you!!! Me also with the same problem here except I’m having like a looseness issue on that entire board it rest on. I didn’t need to back out any screws or nothing. But I’m gonna have to jimmy something to hold the rice all together somehow. Where can I get belt from?
excellent, i had same issue with my 740 and it was the small belt which start mechanism, didnt complite startup and after 5 sec was turn off, make sense. chears man :)
lineartechbd1600 And still is...got this deck yesterday and have this exact same problem, other viewers have also helped by giving the belt size to be 9” so thanks cassette community. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
tnx for your video, does this also work for the following issue: sometime when you press play, it starts and stops immediately. Fast winding is not a problem when I am right. Can't check, sold the deck.
I have a drm-540 and the problem is when I play a tape from the beginning it keeps stopping, but once it's past the beginning it will continue to play the tape, but the sound keeps flanging and going back and forth from. good to bad. I've cleaned all the tape heads and wheel and I'm pretty sure belts are good, I'm thinking it's surgery time, any ideas?
Big thanks, lineartechbd1600!. Deck hasn't worked for a decade; this video and a new 9 inch flat belt brought it back from the dead. FWIW, here is where I got mine: www.turntableneedles.com/Flat-Belt-Small-90-Inch_p_512.html (I went ahead and replaced the other as well while I was at it: www.turntableneedles.com/Square-Belt-Transitional-25-Inch_p_224.html)
I have a Denon DN-T620 which only plays if I manually flip/spin the head around. Otherwise it will not play, even after ff/rv is pressed once manually flipping the head..... Any ideas from anyone?

Plays for a bit no sound then stops is a fault caused by the mode belt being warn out, the belt is the smaller of the 2.

This worked for me too :) main belt was the problem.
