In this video we show how to remove the stock twin turbos from our 2007 BMW 335i and replace them with the Vargas OE Plus Replacement Turbos, including an upgraded 6x6 billet compressor wheel.
BMW N54 stock turbos are known to have a failing wastegates, which can be heard rattling, and failing oil seals, which causes smoke and oil consumption.
This job is fairly time consuming, but very achievable with the right tools, mechanical knowledge, and parts. The most difficult parts of the install are removing the front subframe, installing the silicone turbo inlet pipes, and keeping everything organized. Our video shows how to get it done with relative ease.
Hopefully this video helps with your install and saves an expensive trip to a mechanic. Please leave any questions about the install and we'll try to help.

It's this hard with a lift, support bars and all that. Imagine with a jack, crawling underneath like a molerat and my iPhone flashlight.
Just like a molerat lmao.

I've done it on my drive way while my car was on jackstands in the rain. Let's say it wasn't the most fun thing I've done 😆. Only took me a good day

Just finished replacing my turbos, oil pan gasket, engine mounts, and water pump/thermostat. Easily the most miserable weekend of my entire life.. But the video helped a lot!
I am reluctant to drop 6K on this, so thanks for the motivation. I am embarking on replacing theses on my 08' 535i. Wish me luck.

😂😂😂😂😂 you made me laugh even tho I’m depressed cuz of my turbos
Guys, this job really isn't too bad. You work your way up to stuff like this.
I used to be scared shitless to change an exhaust on my motorcycle. It was actually like 3 bolts, one clamp, and 20 minutes of work. In the end, I started up the bike, and felt such a rush of adrenaline that I did it correctly, felt no leaks around what I had changed, and the SOUND!! The bike was almost alive, I had accomplished something I thought was hard and scary, and you get that absolute thrill and elation you could never get "paying a mechanic" to do it.
Since then, I've slowly done more and more, acquired more tools as I needed them, I do things faster, and by feel, and with less videos and guides on forums.
You really have to start small, and at least TRY to fix your car/bike/lawn mower yourself before you grow the confidence to tackle more stuff. It's basically screwing & unscrewing stuff, moving stuff out of the way, lubing parts, staying labeled and organized, having the right tools so it takes 5 minutes to do a task instead of an hour, coding the proper things with a phone or laptop connection to your car, and finally just having faith (and caution) that you're doing it right. Again, it's such a rush and satisfying feeling when you start up the car, see/hear/feel the difference, and know that you did it yourself, saved money, and learned a lot you wouldn't have otherwise.
If you're thinking about doing mechanical work yourself, DO IT! (just have a good buddy around, or more money, time, space for the car to lay undrivable, or a daily driver, because yes, it will take longer than expected, and things DO come up, holding back your progress. question is, are you going to be a G and keep pushing forward through it, or give up?)
You're absolutely right! 🙌 That's one of the biggest reasons we have DIY videos. To show people that a lot of these jobs actually aren't as intimidating as they may seem. Obviously a job like this should never be your first, but starting with simple stuff like an oil change can give you the confidence to work up to bigger jobs like this!
qxANGELxp I just finished torquing down the front subframe after starting this DIY in January. I did little here and there whenever I could over the past 3 months, and I’m finally in the home stretch!
Before this, it was full suspension install, and before that it was radiator, intercooler, charge pipe, intake. I’m truly moving up on the rungs of the ladder of experience.💪
I resonate with you as in the beginning I was scared to put on a new exhaust. I had an experienced “pro” at an exhaust shop do the install, and he didn’t even do it well - sloppy cutting of the pipes, breaking a bolt, and stripping the threads on my exhaust flange. That’s when I realized maybe I CAN do better and started learning as well as putting faith in myself to work on my car. Yes, I have been a G and it feels great !!
@@ecstuning Your video helped so much, thanks!

You can't count on other people to care about your car when they work on it. Only you.
From personal experience, I can tell you that those “quick disconnects” for the coolant lines do not come off that easily
The little ope forgot to take the oil feed line out. It’s a t30 then cut to the next scene killed me 😂. You can’t fit a normal t30 socket in their and have a ratchet, then that line is miserable to pop out.
@@rickcorless9795 exactly I just unbolted the hoses from the block and took off the lines from the turbos off the car deff the coolant lines are welded on or something 🥴took a hammer flat head and like 3 hrs of hulk smashes to get those dang hoses off 😩
THEY SURE AS HELL DON’T!!!
i swear popping out the coolant and oil lines is the worst! You dnt wanna be rough yet you have to put so much force but with carefully so you dnt break that shit, bloody stressful for sure.
Alright so now we're gonna........... break out the MasterCard and pay the tech to do it.

I definitely prefer to pay for that job!!!

Just got this done at home with the upgraded 17t turbos, this really helped out a lot. Overall took me 3 days about 18-20 hrs to get it done ( this was on jackstands btw so it might be quicker if y’all got a lift). Hardest thing was the tight space because I used jackstands but otherwise if you get all the parts and tools you need before hand, as well as have some experience working on cars, I found it really wasn’t a difficult job at all. However extremely time consuming. Be sure to get the oil pan gasket, water pump and thermostat done at the same time since they will all be accessible.
do you have something i can message you on? going to do my turbos, my gaskets, waterpump and thermostat, etc. soon and want to make sure i have everything i need before doing it
That’s incredible, you took off the subframe completely and put it aside?
@@Critical7hinkingit’s really not that difficult I’m doing it right now on jackstands and with no help from anybody other than my dad when there’s a line thats being stubborn, I would say the hardest parts is the subframe and power steering rack, and the lines and bolts that get stuck and stubborn other than that it’s just bolts and nuts and remove things
it's cool it only takes 30minutes to do this!

Drop the struts, hang calipers and drop subframe assembled. Trust me👍👍
I just did this and it was miserable
Roachbowl dropped sub assembled or tore down?
Aaron Dugan assembled ish. Dropped and disconnected subframe from the whole passenger side of the car and swung it out with the steering rack. I regret not dropping the whole subframe out lol
So I did this on the weekend on jackstands on my 200k+ km Canadian '08 135i.
Couple notes:
I did this *without* dropping the subframe. YMMV but on the 135i there was "lots" of room.
Wiggling the oil / coolant lines did exactly jack... Needed a nice pry bar there. Damn california cars in the video!
You need a mid length extended T50 socket on a 3/8 drive to get the manifolds off. It can't be too long because otherwise you won't have room. I used this set: www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/maximum-14-piece-torx-impact-bit-socket-set-0580334p.html#srp
You also need a low profile T30 to get the oil feed lines off. There is very little clearance here. I used a T30 bit on a 1/4 bit ratchet.
3/8 electric ratchet was a huge time saver.
Takes a while but the instructions provided in the video are excellent. Thanks ECS, you guys got my business for the replacement parts!
That's not a California car, i live in socal, and our cars don't even have rust on boltheads LOL
P90Puma very accurate. What I’m going through right now. Gonna attempt to put together again
If you have xdrive I'm pretty sure you have to drop the subframe
Now THIS car is a real Money Pit.
Thank you so much for creating this video. It helped tremendously. Started working on it at 7:30am & didn't finish her up until 10pm. Such a PITA, but this video helped a lot. All was done without a lift.
Did you do it on a lift or jackstands?
Anything you did different than what's in the video?
Ryan Davis it’s definitely very doable on stands just a real upper body workout with all the over the shoulder work. Highly recommend also doing the oil pan gasket while you’re at it unless it was recently done.
Pretty good DIY. I do the job slightly differently whenever I pull front subframes. I leave the control arms/ knuckles bolted up and just remove the strut top bolts, motor mount bolts, and the subframe mounting bolts and pull the whole shebang out as one unit. I have ran into the bolts being seized inside the bushing sleeves (very common on all cars,) and the only way to get them out is to destroy the bushing or blast the bolt out with an acetylene torch. I live in New York, so if you live in a good environment where there is no salt used on the roads you could probably do it this way. Another thing to note is all the suspension stuff needs to be retorqued when preloaded. If your doing this job at home, make sure you do not rotate the steering wheel or shaft with it disconnected or you'll most likely destroy the clock spring. Again, good DIY to a job that is inevitable for anyone who wants to upgrade they're snails or fix the annoying wastegate rattle.
Underrated comment🎉🎉❤ thanks Boss, saved a ton of work. I assume if you don’t touch the suspension components you don’t need an alignment but did it just to avoid taking any chances. :)
Did this about 2 years ago under some 24 inch jack stands.
Honestly wasn't bad, my biggest issue came from the fact I was replacing the clutch with the upgraded 335is clutch at the same time.
Since the engine was supported by the brace and just hanging, once I took off the transmission, everything went all out of wack.
Took me forever with a ton of muscling it all around to get the transmission and engine back into position and reinstalled. I recommend having either the engine or transmission mounted and fixed while working on these two jobs to prevent my issues.
Did I hear him say "right on my chest, just where I like it.."? Why doesn't this dude have his own channel?
Isn't he with Donut Media now?
After doing a few N54 turbos, the process honestly isn't that bad. My first go at it took two days on a AWD sedan model, which means you just have to work around the front passenger axle. Those are the real pains. Other than that, this job isn't TOO bad. It's definitely labor intensive and I charge accordingly for sure lol. I personally think the hardest part of the entire is removal and reinstalling the coolant and oil lines on the turbo. The most annoying of the process is ALL OF THE ENGINE COOLANT GOOD LORD THERES SO MUCH.
Yea I wanna replace all my shit lol. I have an 2007 335xi
8E6JI how much would you charge someone?
Al Guapo about $1500 if I supply coolant and oil.
8E6JI for that price doing it in my driveway with a car jack and my iPhone camera doesn’t sound so bad anymore lol
Al Guapo yeah man, for sure! I honestly couldn’t imagine doing this on my back after doing it on a lift, so kudos to you man!
If I had to do this job, might as well do the oil pan gasket.
And thermostat, and water pump and everything that's down there!
Motor mounts too
Same thing my mechanic said. Once the subframes undone you might as well run the whole laundry list!
May as well replace the engine while you're in there too
Now that you’ve got all that BMW stuff off the car may as well put a Toyota motor in there.
I am going to sell mine after watching this.
I was gonna sell mine before I watched this video now I just need a rope to finish myself off
@@mazjap What RWD will you swap it for?.
thank you for this video...I am thinking about 30 days...not 30 min. lol
Thanks a lot for making this video. This video will help a LOT of N54 owners!
Yes it will help us 54 guys. Go buy the 55 post 2011 single turbo model and save 45% of the cost and 65 lbs less weight with 1 turbo that has a much better linear powerband from idle to 6800 rpm vs the 54 twins which are good from 1300 to about 5600 rpm then fall flat.
This guy should be feature and make his own episodes at donut media, building a budget miata maybe a good idea.
Love how natural the video is
I don't even have an N54, but the attitude is the best part of this video.
This video makes me love the placement of the turbo on my MK7 GTI
Jason S good luck lol
Auto-diag Fellah already replaces my turbo. Took me 3 hours
even better on the B5 Passat. Only the airbox has to come out. full exposure.
Even better with my genesis coupe stage 3:) top mount baby
The important word here is turbo vs turbos.
I just did this job and will add my own observations:
- Label your bolts, especially the torx M6-16 go into the block & water pipe and the torx M6-12 go into the CHRAs, the rest of the screws are external torx that go everywhere else.
- The turbo oil and water lines are much harder to remove than shown. (Annoyingly so!!)
- Attach the oil supply lines to chra before installing turbo saves time.
- Inlets are also a PITA but lowering the engine was a good idea and made it much easier.
The misc parts add up: new seals and gaskets $250, water pump & tstat $380, inlets $200, outlets $200.
GL!!
Good Lord is right! I'm having anxiety reading all these comments!
Just finished up one of these jobs in my workshop and all i can say is good luck to anyone attempting this without a lift and some mechanical experience also.
I love those calipers and rotors so much
I was looking through the comment specifically to see if someone knew where to buy those. I’d love to try and fit them on my e60
Was thinking about picking up a 335 and wanted to see what I may be getting myself in to WHEN I blow the turbos. Thank you ECS for convincing me to stick to my V.A.G cars instead, I thought they were bad until I watched this 😥
Wait is this the Donut Media guy?
An alternator on that engine drove me nuts and now seeing how hard to replace the turbos, im selling the car and done with anything has turbos on BMW. But I still buy the N55 tho. At least one turbo. But I wanna say you did a great job replacing the turbos and you are pro.
Chapeau!
I learned a while back, that you need to know how to work on these cars yourself if you don't want to go bankrupt and make owning this car worth it. I have never worked on anything as complicated as these BMW's before, but saying that, its still not that hard to work on. Videos like this one from ECS really really helps as well.
this man went on to make great content at donut
Funny how the first time I watched this I thought it was a big deal, and now I realize it’s so simple and I’m buying the first good deal on a manual n54 I find, preferably one needing turbos.
I feel like I would get along with this dude, seems chill.
Let's hang
@@ecstuning 10/10 would hang if I didn't live in Canada.
You Forgot to add that the turbos are easy remove bc you dont have to remove both manifolds and just have to loosen the v band. The stage three turbos with a stock bottom end and a couple of fuel mods from vargas will put you at 164 on the half mile around the 700hp. While I was working there Vargas had the record for stock bottom end. Plus all turbines were balanced over 160000rpm for quality. solid stuff, I enjoyed putting test driving these cars.
It would be easier to pull the engine out, holy crap a lot of work! great job ECS!!!
Thanks guys I am currently rebuilding my car and I am swapping it from 318i to n54 335i I finished rebuilding the engine and now am on the thermostat and water pump part thanks so much ECS tuning

I started watching this at 0:00 fell asleep, woke up and he's still disassembling the car. My dreams of owning one of these is ruined.
Just got an N54 with 124k miles on it. Turbos are g2g for now - dreading this job one day. I don't have it in me to pay a shop to do it lol
it's just incredible to watch this video, super amazing! I fixed a few small things on my 12 X3. Last weekend, I was trying to replace the valve cover, took me hours to unplug all the connectors in a tight space, but I failed to unplug an inside hose (pretty big one, don't know what's that for). I hesitated and eventually gave up. After I put everything back, misfire, O2 sensor voltage low. I probably can fix them if I have one more day, but I totally lost the mood. I was very frustrated and drove my shaking X3 to a local shop and paid around 1.4K to get everything done. What a awful weekend...
They make it look so easy on RUclips 😂
Oh my god this guy is so familiar 🙀😂
Holy crapballs. Will be praying to the Bimmer Gods that my turbos are intact and that my boost problems are a vacuum leak or coil pack issue!
This man is good explaining and making videos thanks for the video
I have a n52 and I wanted to get a 335i for the extra power, this video very much changed my mind lol
I sold mine because of the turbos. When I saw this I thought, yeah I’m still glad I sold it.
Amazing guide though👍

Did this on the ground on my drive way. Took me almost almost 150hrs for my 335xi Pure stage 2 upgraded. By myself. From a scale of 1-10, I will give it a 8 because of the manifolds. Hated taking the manifolds out more than the turbos to be honest. Rusted bolts..eh
Yo I’m doing this now and i was wonderin did you end up using new bolts on the +90 ones...or did you just reuse them
Ok I've been thinking on buying a 2011 535i but after watching this video, I will continue to save an simply build my mustang and just twin that instead! I love watching dissemble car vids and such but this kinda makes make not want a BMW now. "ok today we are gonna change spark plugs" .... removes the cylinder heads, timing chain and crankshaft
What brake kit is that?
I m on it, since 2 days on jack stands. it s a fucking job. Very time consuming, many parts in the way, a lot of different bolts, shrinking bolt s from downpipes, little room to work, you need a lot of tools, coolant and oil trips on your faces and so on ... The guy in the video is definitely a professional mechanic he knows what he is doing...
I feel like anybody that wants to buy a $8,000 335 on marketplace should watch this before doing the deal
Shoulda listened to this comment
Thank you for this video! I no longer want to own a modern turbocharged BMW. Cheers!
That was truly amazing to see........great lighting.
Love from the 🇬🇧
Wow, good content, big effort on this one. I suggest that you put the torque specs in the description too. This is probably the hardest install on an N54 motor. Seriously a jigsaw puzzle of parts. Subsystems he had to remove before the turbos: coolant, suspension, steering, exhaust, intake. Whole lotta stuff going on at one time. This is the best time to take care of everything below the engines cover: replace those worn out E90 control arms, engine mounts, sway bars, higher performing cooling system, radiator, coolant pump/thermostat housing, inlet pipes, intercooler, charge pipe, and down pipes. Watching this video, its an intimidating level of complexity due to the number of subsystems you're dealing with at one time. I am gonna be at this one for a month of weekends with all of the other stuff I need to do at the same time as 'just replace the turbos'.
Anyone watching this, you can do an install by just removing the Downpipes, water pump and motor mount and you have plenty of room without having to remove the subframe. Still pretty damn tight but it’s doable without a lift.
Yea the first 2 times did it without a lift after that i used a lift but it is do able without
I am not a mechanic or something like that, but I love concept of this video, that guy is amazing!
These videos are very well done I enjoy these vids

I did it on a 135i in my garage on jack stands. Wasn’t that bad. Better than paying labour. I didn’t touch water pump either.
You definitely look more happy at donut media:) great work explaining the process
I just did this job for a customer using two jack stands to hold the car up a piece of card board to lay on and a low pro jack to hold the motor up didnt remove the subframe I only removed the motor mount and bracket as one unit and moved the rack and pinion out of the way and that gave me plenty of room ...yes it takes some time without a lift but it's really not that bad just time consuming
It looks really bad as time is very consuming.
safe to say i love my e46 even more 😭

@@sehrerwachsen8955 Audi A5 3.0tdi, the turbo is behind the engine top side, so really its just few bolts and oil line.
1 turbo on a V6 is not a very efficient design.
Some reason he made it look easier than me taking mine out. Though I did mine on jack stands. Maybe that played a factor?...
Must not be in the rust belt, most of those bolts would've been seized, or would've snapped upon removal
Right in the heart of the rust belt; Ohio! We use the car for R&D so its had parts on/off a bunch, which keeps things moving.
@@ecstuning you're lucky then lol. I'm a Ford technician, I've had 3 year old cars snap manifold studs on me, I'm also smack in the middle of the rust belt in NJ
If all the manifold nuts come off easily enough is it essential to replace the studs. Just in case one snaps bad.
The bolts are always getting hot as shit making them easy to unscrew anyways I never have problems replacing turbos
I'm in Ohio also, my 08 335xi has 117k miles on it, and it's still beautiful underneath

Holy shit. Had no idea Zack came from this before Donut!
Isint it easier to remove the whole engine out of the car, swap out the turbos and install the engine again?

This was a great video now i know what to look forward to do on my 335i. When i do this job im just replace alot of things in there when i do this to.
Just finished my turbos thanks for the video it helped a ton. However. Do not connect the coolant pipe before you connect your outlet pipe onto the turbos. It will save you a ton of headache
Thank you for the truly helpful video. I was able to accomplish this on a 2008 535 xi without sub frame removal, a bit challenging, but I did it on jackstands in my garage.
You'll definitely be under this car for 3 weeks if your using Jack Stands
And its not even for working on the car, its for motivating yourself to work on it knowing that you’ll be on the floor on jack stands
was actually not too bad tbh
U be dead underneath the car before its finished
I really like this video, the job was done in a very clean environment, looked more like an operation theatre than a garage. WELL DONE BOYS. I enjoyed this video a lot.
This is CRAZY, imagine you doing this on 535xi which is unfortunately this what I have,, massive work factory rear air inlet no way it can be replaced with out dropping tranny no wonder the silicon ones came pretty handy easy installment!
