When I was living in Maine, I used to keep 2 to 3 five gallon buckets in the back of the truck for salt and sand mix. I also used to keep a couple floor mats and strips of carpetting to throw under the tires. Cat litter worked pretty well, too.
You should have gotten the cowboy hat; it looked good on you. In Texas, a person who rides around their ranch but never gets out of the truck is known as a windshield rancher, and they are all hat and no cattle. Thanks for sharing and I wish you well in those icy conditions.
I used to live in Jersey. I do not miss sheets of ice and busting out asses cleaning slow and Ice. Ugh. So sorry you had to go thru this. Warrior.. we learn as we go. I'm starting van life soon!!!
Another proof positive that van life is not easy, cheap or cheating . Kudos for hangin in there.....and avoiding a crash by skill or by miracle. Could only imagine that ride down the hill😬
If you don’t have at least all season or winter tyres on and full snow chains available then you are the author of your own misfortunes. Ice melt/ sand and salt depend on vehicles driving over it to provide a churning effect to break up the ice. If there’s no vehicles driving over it then it won’t quickly break the ice up. It will act as a nucleus and help melt the ice but this takes time. Best sticking to main treated roads. Snow chains for all driven wheels is safest.
See the RUclips videos on how to mix water, rubbing alcohol and dawn dish soap for an instant ice melt. Great for spraying on windows. Pouring some near your tires would’ve melted that ice instantly but luckily you weren’t stuck. Please stay safe.
I’m glad you survived everything in this video. I want to get some spikes like those but I’m not going to be crossing any creeks on icy snow covered logs. 😂 🎉🎉
Great video! I particularly enjoyed the walk to the soapstone cave. I felt so envious as you danced annd flew along what seemed the entire length of the tree across the streams. I can’t remember if my balance was ever that good. Anyway, the woods, stream and cave were beautiful! This video has a nice variety of activities.
Omg my anxiety level sky rocketed when you were walking across that log and when you decided to enter the cave ...... I settled pretty quick tho when I realised - had anything happened the vid I was watching would not exist lol ....... Great vid thanks Jen from Queensland Australia
Lived in Yosemite Valley for five years. Always had chains, what a difference they made when going Up, Up outta the valley then down into Oakhurst, and then to Fresno.
I was going to suggest you ask a Ford dealer what they recommend for that vehicle in the way of chains or something else. If they have a good recommendation, you could shop around for a good price on the product.
I'm seeing a pattern here ... if it's red and black .. it's sold. Try Home Depot for an ice chopper made from regular steel. Looks like a square shovel but perfectly flat like a giant putty knife. Happy New Year!
I love hiking, but I don't do winter hiking. I know my skills. I like going up to the White Mountains of NH. I love the fog in the woods with the light just right. Too bad you don't have a Market Basket in the area.
You have great one liners! I know how you feel about slip sliding away. So scary when that control is lost. Glad you got friends in high places! Peace out.
I have recouped the costs I put into the van and saving more than I ever did now! But yeah the gadgets, maintenance, gas ain't cheap. Maybe a quarter of my budget vs when I lived in an apartment. Savings mostly from no rent obviously.
Thanks for info on gas mileage, that is hard info to find on the internet. It's like it is top secret information since commercial vehicles don't have to state it on window sticker.
Just a heads up, if you buy a cowboy hat, you will need to learn how to two step! That black one looked good on you! Another great video. It was 88 degrees here yesterday in central Texas!
Was wondering if there were any open campgrounds in your area during the winter? When the weather gets super brutal, they might be a good place to hold up for a couple days.
Hey dude before you fill every cubby hole with an item you might want to consider buying yourself one of those rechargeable battery 8-inch chainsaws they come in quite handy for when a tree comes down across the road when you're up in the boonies. It also would come in handy to cut branches off of the trees to put under your tires❤ once again the smell of the pine trees just make sure you don't pick them up off the ground cuz I hear you all have Critters😮 we don't want to talk about the critters the law of attraction is Real and True
I’m so glad that you did not crash into the bushes and that you were able to get off that icy road successfully. what does bogg my mind, is that you continue to find more security on a remote road where you could be killed and left for dead for days or in a situation where you’ve gotta walk for miles to get help, Rather than parking in a Walmart parking lot or the Cracker Barrel, or a side street that would be far less risky than these other off the beaten path roads 😮 Be Safe Matt🤗 Do you even have winter Snow tires??? Some places don’t allow chains on your tires because they damage the road so much. Also, (I feel like Mother here😂) do you have a tracking device on you so when you fall off those ice covered logs into the water a beeper goes off and somebody will be able to find your body or when you get stuck in the cave you can send for help with this beeper?
There is just no Cracker Barrel anywhere near by, most lots are patrolled, and the one Walmart I try not to stay more than one night in a row. It's not easy to find places in built up suburban areas.
Once you feel it skidding.... the transit actually beeps out these loud alerts and the dash flashes with red lights! Which I think just makes the situation worse!
The Ford Transit doesn't let you switch modes, the computer decides when to toggle between 2 and 4wd. That said, it's always worked when I really needed it.
A lot of adventure in just one day! But everything worked out. I wanted to watch dinner, but there's something about the inside of your van all lit in red that is too strange. My instinct is if I'd never be inside it in person, it doesn't make sense to now.
What are you talking about? When you buy them, they come in a pair. You only need the two they come in pairs. Depending on your drive of your vehicle, you put it on front or back. I'm confused on what you mean lol
well jiminy im glad i have started my ny eve beer. the road ice. the icy limb you crossed. the cave of water. jiminy. oh but wait. go back and buy the cowboy hat. lol. please and thank you.
Chains won't help on ice.
Chains are for all season tires on cars to get through snow.
Those tires on your van are good enough for snow.
When I was living in Maine, I used to keep 2 to 3 five gallon buckets in the back of the truck for salt and sand mix. I also used to keep a couple floor mats and strips of carpetting to throw under the tires. Cat litter worked pretty well, too.
Wow great photos of the cave and water falls you always find cool places. Glad you made it out of that ice alive lol.😅
You should have gotten the cowboy hat; it looked good on you. In Texas, a person who rides around their ranch but never gets out of the truck is known as a windshield rancher, and they are all hat and no cattle. Thanks for sharing and I wish you well in those icy conditions.
Another great death defying video.! And you do all your own stunts!👏
If Hollywood filmmakers catch wind of this video, he just might be hired as a stuntman!
So glad you are safe. What a beautiful waterfall!
I used to live in Jersey. I do not miss sheets of ice and busting out asses cleaning slow and Ice. Ugh. So sorry you had to go thru this. Warrior.. we learn as we go. I'm starting van life soon!!!
Omg! I was so nervous when were in that cave. Stay safe friend.😮
Tire chains are sold at tire stores. In some places if you don’t use them, they will give you a refund in the spring when you return them unused
Cowboy hat looks good on ya, cowboy! 🇨🇦 🇺🇸
Greetings from a Tiny Island in Maine, USA - Kitty litter is good to try for traction . I have also used my floor mats in a jam .
Another proof positive that van life is not easy, cheap or cheating . Kudos for hangin in there.....and avoiding a crash by skill or by miracle. Could only imagine that ride down the hill😬
Wow, very adventurous! Unbelievable cave. You're brave. And fun! 😊
Thanks as always.
You ate so right ...do not fight it ...go with the flow..taken me years to work that out....really enjoy your videos
thanks

Reminds me so much of Nova Scotia. I love it ! 😻
Might want to make a New Years visit to Wayside Inn in Sudbury. Oldest inn & restaurant in America from 1716.
See the RUclips videos on how to mix water, rubbing alcohol and dawn dish soap for an instant ice melt. Great for spraying on windows. Pouring some near your tires would’ve melted that ice instantly but luckily you weren’t stuck. Please stay safe.
Sounds like a cool science experiment, ill have to look into that
"Traction Magic" turns a sheet of ice into sandpaper. It's environmentally friendly and you can put it on your tires to get traction when needed 😁
Beware of the plow blade, especially with heavy snow, the connector is kinda weak and breaks easy.
This guy is a one man comedy show.
Glad you're not dead.
Have a safe New Year 🎉
Thanks you too!
Recovery boards are a must.
Florida
I’m glad you survived everything in this video.
I want to get some spikes like those but I’m not going to be crossing any creeks on icy snow covered logs. 😂 🎉🎉
Safe travels in the New Year!🎉

Thanks for watching Melissa, I love walking the logs!
Maybe get a towing strap among a multiplicy of options ✔️
Let’s be careful out there Ol’blue eyes! Happy New Year! 🎉
Thanks you too Jim
There has been a couple of times when cat litter worked beautifully getting cars out of icy and snow jams. In an emergency of course.
good to know
Omg my anxiety level sky rocketed when you were walking across that log and when you decided to enter the cave ...... I settled pretty quick tho when I realised - had anything happened the vid I was watching would not exist lol ....... Great vid thanks Jen from Queensland Australia
Thanks Jen!
Lived in Yosemite Valley for five years. Always had chains, what a difference they made when going Up, Up outta the valley then down into Oakhurst, and then to Fresno.
yeah, I've use them on a car in the rockies. They definitely make a huge difference.
The cave walk was pretty cool. Stay safe.
I love your videos, don't change anything!!!
thanks
You can use floor mats as recovery gear
great idea

Thanks, I'll look into that! Happy New Year!
Thanks for taking us along with you. Beautiful area.
It doesn't ice up all that often and so when it does just have a little patience and wait for it to melt
Be super safe💕
I love hiking, but I don't do winter hiking. I know my skills. I like going up to the White Mountains of NH. I love the fog in the woods with the light just right. Too bad you don't have a Market Basket in the area.
I never got into winter hiking either. Just not for me.
I love watching your videos I could do it all day they are amazing
Dude, you are seriously funny.
I can watch you all day. So relaxing.
You have great one liners!
I know how you feel about slip sliding away. So scary when that control is lost. Glad you got friends in high places! Peace out.
Could you do a video on how much money you have wasted in 2024 to help other van living people? Thanks Happy New Year!!!🎉
I have recouped the costs I put into the van and saving more than I ever did now! But yeah the gadgets, maintenance, gas ain't cheap. Maybe a quarter of my budget vs when I lived in an apartment. Savings mostly from no rent obviously.
I forgot how harrowing the hinterlands can be.
There are hitch mounted platforms made to hold a winch . Cheapest and easiest solution . Vevor sells an inexpensive winch with wireless remote .
Thanks for info on gas mileage, that is hard info to find on the internet. It's like it is top secret information since commercial

P. S. if you will chill your whole onions your fridge for a few hours, they will not make you cry.
Why do you have a Sankofa, on your right lateral forearm…?
If you don’t mind my asking. Thanks, in advance, for your reply.
The Eye of Horus you mean? I liked the story behind it.
My wardrobe comes from Tractor Supply pretty much. lol
Was wondering if there were any open campgrounds in your area during the winter? When the weather gets super brutal, they might be a good place to hold up for a couple days.
There are no campgrounds in MA that stay open during winter, neither state run ones nor private ones.
Good balance
WOW, that cave was beautiful. Have you ever thought of offering guided hikes? i'd pay for it.
Chains are illegal where I live. Which is crazy because we need them!
Where's that? I've been in many areas of the country where they are REQUIRED on the road
@ I’m wrong!
One word: Florida
yeah I wish!
Like a Savage. Great video! Happy New Year!
😍🙏
Around this time I'm in Florida when I travel
I wish!

yeah seriously considering getting one of those, probably will soon to replace the cheap handsaw I have
I’m so glad that you did not crash into the bushes and that you were able to get off that icy road successfully.

Too bad. I live just up the road, I could have helped. Where you headed to Ozzies?
Juice & Java!
That had to be one of the scariest times ever for you
Once you feel it skidding.... the transit actually beeps out these loud alerts and the dash flashes with red lights! Which I think just makes the situation worse!
Did you set your Ford AWD to the snow ice mode? What did you think of the AWD?
The Ford Transit doesn't let you switch modes, the computer decides when to toggle between 2 and 4wd. That said, it's always worked when I really needed it.
Hey what happened to buying pre-chopped onions/vegetables??
They are... hard to find

glad you are safe how did the job interview go?
Tire snow socks!
Big store Walmart have chains
Sand! And a steel shovel, not aluminum. Not chains.
yeah
What are you talking about? When you buy them, they come in a pair. You only need the two they come in pairs. Depending on your drive of your vehicle, you put it on front or back. I'm confused on what you mean lol
Because there are four tires? All four can skid on ice, regardless of your drivetrain.
EFFEN JUDAS PRIEST HOODIE!!!!! RIGHTEOUS!!!! THE PRIEST!!!!!!
You got it!
Go back and get that hat!
I agree!
Tire Stores should have tire chains. Les Schwab
Best ice breaker .. an axe
yeah, thinking of getting a hatchet
"This might be me recording my own death" 😂
Burlap bags and let some air out of the tires.
well jiminy im glad i have started my ny eve beer. the road ice. the icy limb you crossed. the cave of water. jiminy. oh but wait. go back and buy the cowboy hat. lol. please and thank you.
Thanks for watching Bonnie, hope your year is off to a great start!
Just get the chains
getting them tomorrow hopefully
May 2025 keep you out of the ditch Matt!
Hope so! Made it through day one!
Do you have Triple A?
Closest you came to dying? Come on. 😅
It think so, I didn't record the part where I was skidding downhill in this thing. It was f78487476 terrifying
@ lol
