  • UPDATE (July 27, 2018): Denis passed away on July 19, 2018, murdered in a violent carjacking attempt. We stand by what we’ve published so there will be no erasure of historical accounts, but I believe we can all move on from this. Despite past differences, I hope we can all join and mourn the loss of an athlete whose contributions to winter sports in Kazakhstan stand unparalleled.
    ---------------------------------------------------
On March 30, 2016, skaters Yuzuru Hanyu and Denis Ten almost collided during Yuzuru’s SP run-through at the practice rink for the Boston World Championships. Yuzuru swerved out of the way last second but yelled at Denis in anger. He explained afterwards that Denis had twice gotten in his way the day before, again during Yuzuru’s SP run-through, as well as a year ago during the 2015 World Championships in Shanghai (sportiva, April 1, 2016). Clips from different angles, submitted by audiences present on the 29th (the day before the almost-collision) and during the 2015 World Championships, support Yuzuru’s account and represent our take on the incident.
    Mar 29, 2016
    - Denis was twice in Yuzuru’s way during Yuzuru's SP run-through at the main rink practice session
    - Post-practice, Yuzuru privately approached Denis about the interruptions. Denis suggested that “maybe the rink is smaller” but was overall unconcerned (icenetwork, March 31, 2016)
    Mar 30
    - Yuzuru was setting up for a Triple Axel during his SP run-through when Denis started his spin right in his path. Yuzuru ended up diverting from his path last second. Denis continued his spin. Yuzuru punched the wall and yelled at Denis, “Was that really necessary?" (nbcsports, March 31, 2016)
    - JSF has considered to file a petition to ISU calling for a warning against Denis (Jackie Wong on- site report, March 31, 2016)
    Mar 31 - Apr 02
    - Brian Orser, Yuzuru's coach: "When somebody is doing their program, they have the right of way, that's a simple unwritten rule." (icenetwork, March 31, 2016)
    - Yuzuru: “I guess he himself also felt a bit tense, but I had the feeling it was probably intentional. Reviewing the footages afterwards, (I saw that) he had checked in my direction, and then went into his spin from a different direction than the one so far. At practice yesterday too, during my step sequence, he clearly went in my way. Before the short program at last year’s world championships too, there was the time when, even though I had fallen, he took off for a quad into (where I was). However, beyond such feelings, for me to have gotten angry over such things - I felt strongly that was no good” (Sportiva, April 1, 2016)
    - Frank Caroll, Denis’ coach, believes that “nobody is at fault” but added that Yuzuru (1) exhibited “a pattern of collisions” and (2) “had enough time to get ready and adapt” because the Triple Axel is launched face-forwad and normally takes “a long way from the end of the rink to its center” to set up.” (vesti.kz, April 1, 2016)
** Note: while what Frank described may be the norm, Yuzuru's Axel has an exceptionally short setup and is notably entered from a back-counter which affords him close to zero forward-facing time.
    - Denis' message on his IG: "The only apology I want to make is to my support team for the fact that this season has been so difficult." (IG@tenis_den, April 2, 2016)
    Apr 03
    - Yuzuru had approached Denis to reconcile. Denis accepted (Japan Times, April 4, 2016)
    Apr 04
    - As Yuzuru and Denis themselves have reconciled, the Japanese federation did not end up filing a complaint.
** Neither NSFRK (Kazakhstan Fed) nor JSF issued official apologies in acceptance of blame over the incident

The purpose of this video is to highlight the importance of practice protocol of yielding right of way to the skater doing a program run-through.
On March 30, 2016 during the Boston Worlds practice session, skaters Yuzuru Hanyu and Denis Ten almost gotten into a collision during Hanyu's SP runthrough.
Here is icenetwork's report on the incident:
    web.icenetwork.com/news/2016/03/31/169878518
Jackie Wong, a journalist presented at the rink at the moment, also documented what happened in this first hand report:
    www.rockerskating.com/news/2016/3/31/2016-worlds-practice-notes-day-4-a-note-on-hanyu-ten
    A few highlights:
    1) Ten has twiced interrupted Hanyu's SP runthrough on March 29 practice session, a day right before the March 30 incident. After this practice, Hanyu has approached Ten on a one-to-one discussion, which Ten deemed not to be an issue of concern and it's just "the rink is too small"?
    2) On March 30, during Hanyu's SP runthrough, as he is setting up his entrance on the triple axel, Ten has just started his spin right in the middle of the path. Hanyu was forced to divert his route last second, which resulted in a fall, and led to an anger outburst. This is the third time of Ten's interruption to Hanyu's runthrough in two days.
    3) By March 30, day 3 of the practice, Hanyu is performing his SP the third time with Ten's presence at the rink. For elite skaters, this shall be more than enough practices together for one to be alert of another's path.
    4) By Apr 2, Hanyu has reflected on his anger outburst and have approached Ten to ask for a reconciliation, Ten accepted.
    5) Until this day, Ten insists he is not at fault in any way.
    6) JSF has decided against filing a complaint as both skaters have reconciled on this matter.
    7) JSF has NOT apologized to Kaz Fed, contrary to what the Kaz media reported. In fact, the Kaz news inform.kz have released conflicting reports on whether JSF has issued an apology or not.
    8) Intentions cannot be proved, nor is the focus of this video, however, the practice runthrough etiquette shall not be disregarded lightly.
    9) Ten had once associated fans opinion on this incident to racial issue, relating to historic conflicts between Japan and Korea. We like to clarify there is no intention of bringing in racial conflicts to this video. The focus has always been the safety protocol during practice runthroughs. Whether Ten is a descendant of Korea is irrelevant to this discussion.

Hi, would you also add in the fact that Yuzuru DIRECTLY went up to Denis and talked through about Denis' disturbance after the first interruption? Denis, according to him, responded back "Maybe the rink is smaller" and did not apologize to Yuzu. The day after this discussion, Denis once a gain disturbed Yuzu.

You don't have to be Yuzuru's fan to see that Ten was intentionally interupting his practice and doing so endangering not only Yuzuru's safety but also his own. The fact, that Yuzuru was the one to apologize for being validly distressed....pisses me off. I lost all respect I had for Denis Ten.

We are not blaming anyone but trying to create a safer competing environment for the skaters. What this video shows is against everything this sport should be -- justice, mutual respect, and honor. Denis Ten is clever, even if he didn't really intend to hurt anyone, this is a very smart move of menacing the rival and causing disturbance to the mental status of Yuzuru. Can't imagine what will happen if this kind of behaviour isn't called to an end. ISU pls pls seek measures and protect all skaters against harm -- physical or mental.

Whatever it was intentionally or not intentionally in either case Denis Ten has to apologize for being negligent (and disrespectful) towards other skaters during practice. The fact that he does not feel- and does not even want to see!- his mistakes ... it speaks volumes by itself. To stand above our scratched self love/pride.... only few can do this and certainly not Denis Ten. I am sure he did not get in Hanyu way intentionally, but it is not an excuse for his total negligence towards other skaters during practice.

This would have been okay had he apologized and said it was an accident (even though it looks intentional), but he refused to apologize... That in itself says a lot about him, either it was just a bunch of mistakes and he didn't mean it and just happens to be just very prideful, or he has bad sportsmanship and is petty.

but Denis just started his self-defence so soon so rashly, in interview, in news, even in INS, made it look like it's Hanyu's fault, but excuse me, at that time, who's the one practiced with the music?? Denis?? It's Hanyu's time.

Denis Ten is a good skater, but he's so petty! No sense of sportsmanship at all. He's always trying to get to others, especially Yuzuru. And then he feigns ignorance and doesn't offer an apology when confronted, just blaming it on other factors or people. Denis needs to start acting like an adult. His actions could have hurt Yuzu. Someone needs to stop him and keep the rink safe for skaters.

I also believe these little tricks of psyching the competitor is nothing new in the sport, which is why this video exist to show exactly that. As for Jackie Wong making money on this...afterall, he did provide a detailed outline of what he witnessed, if it means he gets a little benefit out of this I think it's fair. In my opinion, this is better information than articles written by those who aren't even there in person in the first place.

It looks like none of you have ever skated on a Worlds practice ice yourselves or you would know these things happen. It's all part of who has the stronger mental game. Yuzu can master his mind but he is also polite to everyone.
Still and all, look who came out ahead? It obviously didn't do Denis any good to try and psyche out Yuzu, did it?

    • @hikarugenji694

I'm still convinced that psyching him out was not his intention. I think Denis was really preoccupied and just didn't pay enough attention to his surroundings. And yeah, near-misses do indeed happen all the time during practices. There are countless videos, which clearly document that.

    1) There were 2 skaters who followed the same path for their jumps. The other fell before he could complete his jump. So why was Denis Ten singled out for criticism and not the other skater skating closely behind Denis and Yuzuru?
    2) One very obvious explanation that you will know if you are a fan of figure skating is that many skaters choose the SAME corners/spots to execute jumps. That spot where all 3 were executing their jumps was probably in all of their programs.
    3) Denis didn't skate in the GP with Yuzuru, so unlike Javier or Patrick, he is unlikely to know for sure where Yuzuru will be headed to execute that particular 3A. Bear in mind that skaters skate very fast across wide distances. Yuzuru was quite far from Denis when Denis started his spin, so it is highly unlikely Denis memorized Yuzuru's SP and remembered to pkant his spin right there on purpose.
    4) These sort of things happen very often during practices. It is unfair to destroy Denis' good name like this without real evidence.

    • @nanalee1431
      @nanalee1431 8 лет назад +35

      +Le Monde
1 Had better read Dasani T's comment below.
      2 Can't see your 2nd point. So?
3 Even Denis didn't skate in the GP with Hanyu, he can also check video websites like youtube to get the information. Of course I don't think he need to do that. They are top skaters. It is easy for them to remember the skating path if it was seen once.
4 You say "these sort of things happen VERY OFTEN during practices". So please name another skater, who was interrupted in the run through more than twice by the the same competitor in the same competition.

    • @architactless
      @architactless 8 лет назад +7

+Le Monde Ok, any of you who watch Yuzuru skate once, right now, without referring to his skate on video, you go straight into the rink. Yuzuru is right there next to you in the rink. Let me ask you, at 1:46 of his SP music, where is Yuzuru? Don't cheat. If you are honest, you will admit you don't know. Denis Ten is not obligated to remember other skaters' skates, only his own. His only mistake is he was doing spins in the middle of the rink during Yuzuru's practice run-through, but rules did not state you can't do that, only the music skater has right of way. Otherwise everyone should get out of the rink. Denis said he trained at a crowded rink, maybe skaters just cope with it with no big deal, avoiding each other even if music is played, and Yuzuru's used to training in a closed of rink in Sendai. You want to make Denis into a villain, but there's no evidence. Look into your own motives, why you do enjoy stirring up anger, when they have already shaken hands.

+Chris Lee It's ROCKET SCIENCE indeed if you are doing your spin for 45 seconds and then suddenly think, "oh, in Yuzuru's SP, he is coming my way now, in 30 seconds time, so I better stop my spin and move." Wow, Chris Lee, you are a phenomenon of quantum physics!

    • @architactless
      @architactless 8 лет назад +5

+Chris Lee Let me make one thing clear, you guys just LOVE DRAMA. Sure Yuzuru has one jump or one practice out of thousands affected because he had to share a rink, but what you guys are doing is really to try to destroy Denis Ten. Somehow, this matters so much to your lives, think about it. I doubt any of you know either skater PERSONALLY. Unfortunately, what you do might reflect back on Yuzuru, which has the opposite effect of what Yuzuru himself wanted, to defuse the situation.

    • @architactless

+nana Lee You must be another Rocket Scientist who can predict in the middle of your spin that "Oh, it is now 1:46 in Yuzuru's SP so I better stop as this is the point of his SP that Yuzuru is coming this way!" Not to mention it's a different rink, different size, different dimensions. Each skater has to adapt their choreography to a different rink every time they skate, so they might not hit the exact same spot! What is your IQ? Must be either sky high you defy the laws of physics or the opposite.
      4) Name another skater? How about Yuzuru Hanyu collided 3 times, once very seriously, 2x with Japanese skaters? So either (1)this is COMMON or (2) Yuzuru is just as bad in not paying attention?

I watched the video several times and can't say if it was intentional. I'm new to skating tho. But still, why is everyone so hella confident and aggressive that Denis did it intentiionally? I don't understand. I mean, for me it is hard not to bump into anyone walking outside, and here skating in a not so huge area+ stress ++other things in mind. I mean. cmon. I call it intentional when a person defiantly pushes another person. Maybe not so good analogy, but still. Denis followed him they say. But, where else he could go? I mean, they go in circles in the same trajectories right? Then the other guy was following that guy. Besides, I can see that if he hadn't done anything wrong in the first place, he has nothing to apologize for. Ppl call it arrogant bad bad bad behavior. But if you were in his shoes, and you really didn't do anything wrong intentionally, would you apologize cuz everyone is hating on you and saying to do so? I mean if I apologized in such a situation, it would mean that I'm acknowledging the fact that I have done it intentionally. Not meant to offend anyone. Just saying. Ppl need to chill

Regarding to your question where else Denis could go, just to give you an idea, the rink size is 30m x 60m, shared by 6 skaters in this particular situation, so there are plenty of places to go other than keep running into another skater's path. Since you are new to skating, here is a little bit of what might help you, it is a known etiquette when a skater music is on (aka during a runthrough), that skater have the right of way. Unlike yourself, Denis is not new to skating, in fact he has been an elite skater for long time.
Of course there is no way to claim this is done intentionally, but what troubled me more here is how Denis handled the situation when he's been approached by this. He flat out denied the trouble he caused to Hanyu (when Hanyu told him personally) and have repeated the same thing right again the day after (that's 4th time in a row by the way). So is it intentionally or not? Hey only Denis Ten knows but it sure is something he should apologize for.
And I don't agree with the logic that if you apologize for something it means you've admitted you've done this intentionally. That's an incredibly arrogant way of thinking. If he's caused trouble to others, he should have apologized. He could have handled this with grace and sportmanship, unfortunately he chose the other path, and turned to SNS to escalate this into some fanwar. So I can see why people are pissed off with how the whole incident has headed. Just saying.

one thing that I hate the most from Denis behavior is he NEVER said sorry, not to Hanyu directly, not in his play-victim instagram posts, not in his interview, NEVER. A skater running into another skater's path is not new, but they said sorry or make a sorry gesture afterwards, because they knew it is unavoidable. But Denis didn't do that.

yukikumix there was one party he apologized to during this incident, and it was his own fans. Something along the line that he was sorry for the worries he caused to his fans. Isn't it ridiculous?! It just demonstrates how arrogant he was. For a fellow skater that was clearly physically and mentally disturbed by his behaviour, he refused to show one ounce of concern, of course he is saving all the concern for his fans feeling during this whole incident. I suppose being Mr popular is more important to him.

+booseesee I'm amazingly disgusted to see this post... wow is this hanyu's antisite, right? I knew there are some malicious antis for hanyu... and some their spiteful episodes... but this is more than expected.. and you soundingly post this site on public space.. for your logic. Your logic seems to me that "you have had some nearmiss or accident, so why you bring up problem, why don't you suppress your anger?" ha? Okay, I don't know D10 was intentional or not, and I hope he didn't. But, at the same times, I understand why hanyu felt anger..he requested attention to D10 after two inturruption during run-through, but next day, happend again. And last world's thing. Maybe D10 was just insensitive and not on purpose, but although he unintended, if the oppsite felt unpleasant, at least, he should have felt sorry..IMO. As same as your post, there are many near miss accident on ice, but after nearmiss, they used to handshake or say sorry or hug for each other at the moment/after practice. If the skaters who had nearmiss with hanyu had felt that was a intentional or neglected, so they have a right for expressing their anger. But as far as I know, there were nothing about that. And about teasing at the ice show or gala practice ... If you are real fan of opposite skater, how about you write a letter to hanyu for stop teasing that things? huh.. and keep blind to other's same teasing. sigh.
If anything, hanyu's anti was more excited than the skater's real fan or skaters themself. Because it's chance to bash him, making him trouble maker. awful... I can imagine some malicious anti felt catharsis when they knew this happening. They just see hanyu's practice/warmup video and make gifs to find any his flaw. Is it funny? Fans and anti do same thing for different purpose. And through this incident, hanyu was also criticized by ten's fan or some neutral people for saying intentional to media/sensitivity. But I don't bear your logic that "he had a history of somethings, so this is also his fault" But I have a weird feeling that both side fans or antis will kept their eyes on their skater's warm up, run-through for finding any moment.. I suggest that you focus what you like and love more than what you hate.

There is no need to be mad over a site that named itself as "antiyuz", this is the sole purpose the site serves. Sadly, Yuzu does have some active anti's that would jump onto any opportunity to spread their hate. Well, I suppose when you surpass the senpai in your country with some die hard fans, it's hard for them to swallow.
This whole d10 incident they are not here to discuss the core issue nor to defend d10. They only had one mission, which is to spread their hate towards Yuzu and demonstrate they would not hesitated to rush to d10's SNS to display their disgusted over Yuzuru. So it will be very difficult to have a logical discussion with them.
They have so much energy LOL. I wish they can spend some to fill up the ice shows of their favourite skater. Spread love but not hate. But it might be too late for some of them at this point.

Um, compilation of fractures? It need to be more complete to prove since skaters "meets" each other from time to time.
I am not going to chose one side because when something happens, both (or more) sides have to take responsibility.
But for me, the whole events seems like a soap opera when a top skater fail to achieve his goal, he started to blame others for it, and this is nothing but unjust.

    • @hexkarlahkhk
      @hexkarlahkhk 8 лет назад +38

Just one point, Hanyu had voiced the matter right after SP (i.e. before the FS), when Hanyu was first in SP with a 12 points lead. How can this be called soap opera of blaming the others upon his own failure? That should be about moral and most importantly, safety.

I know it was issued right after SP, where he scored high but I guess he didn't think that is enough since he didn't break his own SB in the segment.
I have no idea about this whole thing, as I said, these fractures can only prove a few of things, there is NO enough evidence to support both sides, and I just wrote my own feeling about this. I hope you didn't feel upset about this.

      1) I don't think it is not important to raise better safety for skaters. It is possible to change the "Practice" to one-by-one mode instead of letting a group of people to practice on ice while one of them will skate to their music.
However, the 6-minute warmup does not have the possibility to change. (Or you wish each skater warm up 1 minute right before their program?)
Under the current regulations, though the one practices to his music has the right of the rink, it doesn't command other skaters to stand still or ban from doing any elements.
      2) There are several versions about the whole incidence. Some said Hanyu voiced the issue before the SP (after the practice), but not a few of people also claims that the issue is submitted after SP. He did pissed off after the practice though. I have considered both, and I think the latter one is more reasonable. He admitted that he did a few errors (e.g. only got level 3 on StSq), and thus might care about this a lot.
      3) Hanyu have records bumping into each other, for example, the most noted one is to bump into Han Yan in 2014 CoC, where both got severely injured. Eurosport commentator claims that the injury is "not that often" to see in Men's single since the pattern of jumps and route are relatively strict. Judging from the video, Han was out of camera until the sudden he bumped into Hanyu, who did the step sequence and seemed unnoticed to his path.
      4) Judging from what you wrote, it seems you advocated Hanyu a lot. He, well-known, famous and know he can handle his popularity and understand how he can use it to sustain his status. I am not implying that he did use this as a topic to boast his fame, but when there is enough evidence, reasonable assumptions are always allowed.
      5) Everything can be discussed, for this I appreciated you did not use harsh words and offensive, bad language. I also will be waiting for your point of you if there is some, last but not the least, hope you don't feel upset after reading this.

    • @nanalee1431
      @nanalee1431 8 лет назад +33

+Banik Edita Sorry, but I will have different opinions referring to your second and third point.
1 If you know Japanese, you will know Hanyu voiced the issue before SP. You can check it on the net.
2 Your third point seems to suggest Hanyu should be blamed for the crash at 2014 COC. I don't think so. He injured much worse than YANHAN, who was seen by some skating fans at the hotel lobby the next day. Yan looked fine and was ready to date out with his friends. At the same time, Hanyu went back to Japan, sitting in a wheelchair. JSF released a medical report about his condition. He had several parts of injury, and doctor said he must have at least 3 week's rest to cure.
3 this video is not to blame anyone. It just hopes to remind every skater to follow the unwritten rule during the run-through for safety, and it points out that it is very dangerous to interrupt others' run-through when his music is on.

      +nana Lee
      1) for your first point, I have already stated in the second section of my previous comment. There are several versions about when the issue is stated, and of course, can be classified into two categories: before and after SP. I was only suggesting which point of time is more realizable, and of course, I could be wrong. But the information I gathered persuaded me to believe that issue is stated right after SP.
      2) For your second point of view, based on the background of medicine, the severity of injure does not always proportional to who the victim or the perpetrator of a collision. When a collision occurs, both sides suffer from same force due to Newton's Law. In the 6-minute warm-up back in CoC 2014, Hanyu did loops in step then started to skate backward. and when he turned forward, two men collided. Since he was bumped in front, he had the more parts and possibility to get hurt than the side-hurted Han.
      3) This video's intention is very obvious judging from the description in the beginning. It implies Denis Ten intentionally tried to interrupt, and worse, to hurt Hanyu, which is a harsh and irresponsible accuse. I had already written about safety in the first section of my previous comment, and it seemed that you don't have a problem with it.
      4) I would like to thank you to discuss with me without using emotional words. And I hope you don't feel bad after reading this.

Jealousy, I guess. In the recent Kazakhstan report, he was introduced as the Olympic champion, and he once said in a interview program that he always received a lots of plush toys which piled up as high as hills. In fact, he never gets so many toys. What he said had happened on yuzu, not him. Man cannot be as shameless as this.
