The Chapter: Adventure brought me here. I was born in 1990 but as a kid I wanted to BE Will Smith. Big Willie Style was the first CD I bought with "my own money". :)
Hip hop was born out of the systematic oppression of black people... it was in no way supposed to be gimmicky entertainment, lmao. It was about struggle, not fun.
Some people dogged Will for being clean in his rap music. A lot of folks were mad and booed when he won the Grammy for "Parents Just Don't Understand." Gangsta rap was dawning then. But I thought Will was a master lyricist. Gangsta rap has its place in hip hop history. Street poets. But Will didn't grow up like that. Every black person didn't grow up like that. Will couldn't rely on shock, violence, gun play, dropping f-bombs, the n-word, etc. he had to be more creative. Shame he got dogged so bad back then. Half of those rappers that dogged him are not even here anymore. Look at Will Smith now!

honestly. Back when rap had colour, personality, and meaning
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Wow this song is so real. So relatable. Classic stuff. I remember when this song came out.
Will smith will always be one of the GOAT's of hip hop! Super creative and did it without a single curse word. Skill at its finest.
All rappers never cursed during that era. Run DMC Rakim slick Rick and biz markie LL cool j made great rap songs during that time period fresh prince too they didn't need to rap about guns or drugs mumbling curse words
Young mc was clean and smoother.
not that there is anything wrong with cursing but of course when hes appealing to kids its a plus
LL Cool J was better.
Dameon Johnson. The Bill Cosby of rap/hip-hop.
I love this fantastic hip-hop beauty from the early MTV days! It makes my day every time I see this video! This song is a real treasure and an absolute jewel and it always brightens my day Thank you for your outstanding video, it is priceless!!!
Who would of thought back then that this kid would become one of the biggest stars on the planet
Zia. 1988/89. NWA straight outta COMPTON. 2 LIVE CREW!!!! all xxx rappers. Smith was PG-13. Non threatn`in. So Hollywood was the next stop!!!
And now he wants you to keep his wife’s name out of your ducking mouth
telling and showing us in plain site😢
I wonder how much fun he must have had recording this xD

Of course this is the epitome of what was known at the time as bubblegum rap. Yes that is the best way to describe Will Smith at the time easy to play on the radio for all the masses to hear. But DJ Jazzy Jeff was extremely underrated definitely one of the best it's scratching vinyl dropping beats with it 😊.
A Lot of people don't no will Smith was a smooth rapper in his prime
same with Ice Cube till straight outta Compton the movie came out.
... and apparently some people don’t KNOW the difference between NO and KNOW

Fresh Prince almost became fresh fish with that 12yr old run away.
@ZekeRBsCMD That's how she got him! 😆
@ZekeRBsCMD I wouldn't have phrased it that way; but, yeah, that was my thought, too.
Oh yeah that's Vanessa Estelle Williams who we all know as "Keisha" in New Jack City
"There's no need to argue, parents just don't understand."
This has got to be 1 of the most 80's rap songs ever

Happy 50th Bday Fresh Prince !!!
The Prince who would be King 🎤💥
I’m watching all of Fresh Prince of Beliare with my 13 year old son. From the 1st episode down. We’re on episode 4 and they mentioned this song. So I had to bring my son here to listen. Good job Will, and Willow looks just like him.
Also I remember this song came out 2 years before the show
Yeah it was easy to see this dude wouldn't be long for the rap game, Hollywood would be coming for him
Uncle Phil: You're 17 Will, you ain't got a rep yet.
