Wonder how many people have thought it was the chip issue and thought it was a no go fix wise. You have certainly opened my eyes to this issue and what to check for.
I liked this video style as well, I usually watch your videos on my lunch break at work for an hour so I typically have time for the long ones but if I can watch 2-3 short ones that’s even better!
I used to prefer the long versions of fix videos when I first gor interested in them but after watching more fix videos ive started enjoying the short versions of fix videos much more.
Above all I like the quick versions as I don't have the time to watch the long ones (and tend to frame skip through them when there is not a quick version) but the in depth commentary is quite fun
Nice going Vince,a member on the PSX-Place let me know of your video, i expected a bang with thoes electrolyte caps, looking forward to the full replacement. Currently we are still researching on which is the best method for the NECs, what i advise from personal experience and to avoid the hassle, is to have 50% NECs and 50% Tantalums, replace the NECs on the top board where the processors aren't present, and leave the underneath ones as they are, the reason being is that the bottom ones are actively cooled by the fan itself, and the top ones are passive, but with most of the heat concentrated on top, thoes NECs are thr first one to die, and also if you go via full replacement, you might not get it working again due to the bridge between the circuits, so leave at least one NEC, if you plan to do a full replacement, it acts as an internal bridge for the Tantalums, eliminating the need to wire unnecessary jumpers. One of the test subjects before i made the thread on PSX-Place was my personal 60GB CECHC04, at the moment is approaching is 7th month since the replacement, still working as we speak, at the moment i am searching for a A01 or B01 to add to my PlayStation collection, so looking forward to your next video
Naked Snake!!!! I instantly recognised your name and icon :-) You did a great write up, I also went on to read about 15 pages of comments under your tutorial, didn't have time yet to go through all 40+ pages of comments but it all makes for an interesting read. I think on the revisit I will do just the 2 GPU caps on the top board to see how that goes. The others can always be done at a later stage. Just debating whether I need to install 8 new 470uF caps in place of the 2 large NECs or if I should try 3 and 3 or 4 and 3 to bring it closer to the original 1200uF. Thanks for sharing the tutorial with everyone and for commenting over here. Good work. (I will copy and paste this on the other length video as well) Cheers :-)
Hi Vince, I really enjoyed this video. I usually watch the longer ones and skip through it. However with this one, I noticed I watched the whole video without skipping any of it. I think because you had VoiceOver in parts, it kept a more natural flow.
Whenever you post a quick version I watch that instead of the long version. However I also like the longer ones, it's just I don't have that much time to watch them in one sitting, and sometimes I lose track of the process.
I defy enjoyed this. I don't always get time to watch the longer videos and really liked being able to follow long with the commentary. The levels were a bit all over the place but I'm sure with a better mic that it'll be fine.
Vince, i really like the short ones. I really recommend to upgrade the microphone though just like you suggested! My pick for a cheap but good microphone (actually amazing for the price) is the fifine k669b around 25 dollars for a usb microphone. Keep up the great videos! Much love from the Netherlands! 🙏🏼
Both versions are great keep that format, gives people options. As for voice over..wasn't a big fan of it, but hey love the vids and appreciate all the content you bring.
Hi Vince i am a french professionnel repairer ( sorry for m'y english ) i like very much your vids, even if it's not the Wright way, you do some very funny repair and i've just a suggestion : put a link in the description of your références that you used and the list of components too. Best regards
Great Video! My DECHA00A died almost 1 year ago. I've send this video to a friend of mine and he's gonna attempt to fix the console for me with your "Tutorial".
Don’t change a thing I like the twin formats and if you feel the need for a voice over then that’s your choice but it’s not needed I like your genuine reaction
i love the quick ones because i don't always have time to watch the long ones, one tip with that microphone though, don't put it directly in front of your mouth, put it down in front of your chin, that will help with the "popping" of your "P"'s etc, also, if it had a foam pop sock, make sure that's on
Hi Vince, I've been following the same thread for a few months. This week i received the capacitors i ordered from AliExpress (Tantalum 330 e 470 uF). For now i have no time to work on it, but i will. Greetings from Italy
Hi! Optionally you can use ceramic capacitor in parallel to achieve the required capacitance. I don't like to use use tantalum capacitors in my designs if it an absolute necessity. Regards, HW Designer Markus Virtanen
Do it. I liked it... Although that microphone...? Not so much. I like your content quite a lot, and it's great that you show the whole process, mistakes an all, but the short versions are like a highlights reel... 👍🏻
How can I get somebody to do this capacitor fix for me? Looks way too complicated for me to try on my own but I have a PS3 with this problem and I’d like it to be repaired
Depends on what you're repairing, my suggestion would be that if you're going to do a voice over then donut for the full quick version, it's very noticeable between the voice over and original voice and it's a little off putting, I started to watch this one but the difference in your voice took my concentration away from the repair, so now I'm about to watch the full version. I really enjoy your fix it videos, keep them coming.
Thanks for this video mate, do you think there's any downside to just using electrolyte and leaving it at that? I've got a ps3 that's been dead for 6 years so keen to give this a go
I like the idea of doing a voiceover, however the mic quality(with all of the clipping with the sharp sounds like the P or T sounds) is kind of a deal breaker. If you had a better mic (like a Blue snowball), that would make it infinitely better
I have to destroy the NEC TOKINs, i don't even go for the air gun, it doesn't work. After destroying them with pliers i remove the remainders with my soldering iron. Vince, i recommend you to buy a T12 soldering station, that 900M is shitty, doesn't do anything properly. With 30USD you pay for a good one with high quality, life will never be the same :) i have never got back to 900M tips I've tested electrolytic capacitors on an old Toshiba and it didn't work, but with tantalum worked just fine. They have different behaviors in different frequencies, I'm surprised that it worked with your PS3.
I do like the voice over, though I would like it if you could use maybe another mic, because this one has a bit of crackling and the p's are far more pronounced. Otherwise, I do prefer the voice over and quick versions!
When it comes to video, audio is the most important thing to get right. It's easier for audiences to forgive & ignore patchy picture than it is with awful audio. Try to hunt down a good second hand / repair deal on a decent headset microphone or shotgun microphone.
I prefere the quick versions, I think you could give the voice overs a proper shot. A good mic doesn't have to be expensive, I use a 40€ Samson GO Mic on a boomarm for gaming and discord and it's got great audio quality.
Just fyi, when using ceramic capacitors in parallel you just need to take account their voltage rating and what voltage is present in the required voltage rail in question.
If you want to look into getting better audio with vocals/mics give me a shout Vince I will point you in the right direction, even process the raw audio if you want to get it cleaner
you should post only quick versions on this channel and put long version on secondary channel because when i watch one version and not the other youtube keeps recommending the other to me until the end of time.
Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately I can't do this as the 2nd channel wouldn't be monetised (initially anyway) and I live off the advert revenue. Thanks though :-)
Hi Vince sorry but couldn't watch it due to awful audio i know that you said not to comment on that. But from my understanding you normally do a long and a short versiln so why has it changed now ? I normally watch the short versions but sometimes the long ones aswell i have learned some skills and techniques from ypur videos so many thanks for that and continue how ypu have been doing thanks
Thanks Carl, on the longer videos (45 minutes+) I find it had to break down into a quick version without losing key points. My 'new' idea was to do voice overs on certain bits to try and make the video shorter but still trying to keep the information in there. I will give it a few more goes and if it still sounds all messed up I will revert back to filming different bits for the longer and shorter versions. Thanks for the feedback :-)
To the question of whether it could overheat that quick I will say this. The CPU gets super hot quickly. The initial startup shoots it with lots of voltage. That shouldn't cause it to overheat. But I have changed paste before and had the system start up fine. The exact same thing happens with PCs. a CPU without a heatsink can immediately overheat. The PS3 was past the point of passive cooling back then.
I like both versions, but I will buck the trend here and say that this mic was good enough. It was clear and it had a good volume. Yes, there were some plosives, but big deal! Someone suggested buying one that needs repair and use that. Cool idea, but I see no reason to spend good $ on a mic.
yes sound very bad but good video but for the removal of these parts add a little low melt solder to the part first well help the other soldier melt faster
@@Niklas.2711 Super variable microphone (had to really turn up at the start then it was up and down), crackling microphone etc. I couldn't watch this one coz I was struggling to figure out what was being said.
The levels of the audio need to be normalised (with a compressor), this will be an issue with a good mic too so just get the sorted for the next time along with a pop filter and you'll be fine.
Vince could you possibly do a video on how to replace thermal paste on ps3 and ps4 most of the videos out there aren’t clear or could anyone link me to a video

Mathew close to the same for me. I really like long videos, but I dont always have the time.
👍
Mathew I like the short version because I get bored while watching the long version
Agree
I like both quick and full versions, would love to see you buy a faulty microphone to fix and use in future vidios.
That is a good idea actually

Thanks for the feedback Emma :-)
