I've been playing this on my SNES and I am about halfway through the final Dhaos Castle. What an amazing game, it has regressed me to a child and loved playing Tales of Destiny and Eternia. It was a fun playthrough too, I did morias gallery and the coliseum and I'm at level 90 and 42 hours in. Great game.
The battles are pretty similar to Street Fighter - you control the main character manually (the others are controlled with different commands), and depending on when you press certain buttons you will deal different sorts of blows (for example, pressing Up+A will make you stab the enemy, and pressing A twice will sometimes deal critical hits). There's also a super-cool item that lets you use any techniques you want at any time by pressing button codes. :D
@animegamerQ The battles are in real time, however your main character has a "base point" that he always returns to after his attacks. This base point will either be the place where you last stopped him from running, the last point where he was attacked and hit by an enemy, or the point that you manually walked up to yourself. The other characters can only be controlled indirectly with commands (or controlled by the AI), but you can change their positions with the Form command in the menu.
I believe this game is the largest ever released for the SNES (well, technically Super Famicom since it never left Japan). And it was released in '94 - this game is a technical marvel!
I played this after I played Symphonia and I gotta say this is by far one of the best RPGs on SNES if not THE BEST!! Coming from a guy who LOVES Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger THAT'S SAYING A LOT!! I never got to beat this game since my buddy had it on PS1 and he moved away...but someday I will own this game and I will conquer this game!
I am currently playing ToP, never finished the game. The later dungeons are quite nice, requiring you to solve some good puzzles, I just think about Volt's Cave for instance. The only thing I dislike is the broken sounds on ZSNES, but I don't blame the developers (as it's free, they did it with THEIR spare time). Here, it is the sound if you clash into an enemy using Phoenix. But on bsnes, it is 100%ly accurate, even the enemy dying sound in Chrono Trigger sounds perfect (play the original).
The constant camera panning back and forth would be too annoying for me. But I do appreciate the art style and what they were going for with a more dynamic action RPG.
Dejap, the guy who translated this, didnt even get the english names of the artes correct. "Psion Bolt" is actually called Demon Fang in america; It's called Demon God Sword in japan though...
hey this is only the 2nd game i know on snes with real time battle system, besides secret of mana. Can you tell me some other games either on SNES or PS1 with similiar battle system?
I wonder what that battle system is called, how they made it, can it be made in rpg maker mv, and how the fuck did they create such beautiful sprites??? my rpg game seems further and further away from being accomplished, I don't know how to do any of this, I just use the resources provided by rpg maker, lol, damn. This is a wonderful game, I highly recommend it by the way. It's probably my favorite from the snes era, right up there with Breath of Fire II.
de hecho en xillia 2 cless y mint pueden destrozar a bisley y chronos en 30 segundos jajaja mm que raro pense que eran el mismo mundo porque los espiritus tienen los mismos nombres y hasta esta la ciudad de thor
You can't really use the 3rd dimension in ToS. (Abyss was the first to do this). I know it's Snes ... and??? 3rd dimension it's graphic and don't change the battle system at all. You still run on your target, use 3 basic hit and 3 arte (order min/medium/high) and back. Where did you see different battle system? i don't understand.
***** Targeting multiple enemies with spells like Indignation or manuvering around enemies with various targets, or switching over to AI control and hoping that they break the rules and use Free Run even though it wasn't introduced yet (I'm not the only one who sees AI controlled party members running around in circles like idiots, am I?)
you can target multiple ennemies in ToP too with spell xD Free run is only in Abyss. You can't in ToS. even for the AI, just use a bit of the 3rd dimension cause ennemies are not on the same line. i never saw party member running around in circle in ToS (and i'm playing an other NG+ of this game at the moment) ToP and ToS have the same battle system, For Abyss i don't think just Add free run and something like fof circle is enough to say "this version of the battle system looks nothing like the version in Abyss".
La version de GBA es horrenda hasta el punto de ser injugable. Hay un port para ps1, si vas a jugar Phantasia, te recomiendo ir por esa version, es la mejor.
the problem is that the game "feels" like it'll be a classic at the beginning, but after you time travel and meet Klarth, the story, battle system, and plot become completely unbearable. with three party members you realize just how stupid the AI is (Mint literally will use ALL her MP in one fight casting that dumb ass hammer spell over and over again unless you just tell her not to use MP at all, which in turn makes her worthless).
this is such a massive game. and it's from the snes era. wonderful game, proud to have beaten it once. should play it again. 10/10
+Zedrik Allen That was not literal. :v Fans can misunderstand certain words.
I’d take the PS1 or PSP version any day over the original SNES version but that’s just me.
one of hte best RPG ever made, excellent music, art, plot and characters!

Aaaaaah, the red and blue particles from a defeated boss
for a snes,
this is great, unbelievable
even this is a 95s game
dear god this brings so much memories - i'm tempted to play it again.. thanks for the memories
'Soul Edge' looks like a combination between Gravity Well and Tiger Blade. o_O

for a snes game, this is intense 0,0

This game made my childhood , every storyline, every new spell in clarks book I had to get, Ifrit, Maxwell
such a great times :'(
Lucky Enough Did you play in Japanese?
Whoa, immediately starting off a fight with a Jigenzan!
I played this after I played Symphonia and I gotta say this is by far one of the best RPGs on SNES if not THE BEST!! The ending of this game was so rad.
its cool how much of the characters and music run through all the Tales gamesl
Never finished this game, it was too hard for me got stuck at some point. Man this is awesome
Give it a try now
Really high quality for a 14 yr old vid
Yes.
I'm pretty sure this is the precursor or just outright what would become Gabriel Celeste and Ethereal Queen.
man,the tales games are he best
Cless looks so dorky when he’s hit in the SNES version of the game.
this game is so great... one of the best rpg!
this game is sooooo epic the SNES version can not be beat!!!
Origin looks diferent as well for Volt, more diferent from Tales of Symphonia.
best game on snes
@SpiritG0d I think CinnabonChan means to ask you if you recorded this video yourself. =P
This is the best version ps1 and snes I cant wait to get this game on snes
This has some surprisingly good graphics for a SNES game.
I am currently playing ToP, never finished the game. The later dungeons are quite nice, requiring you to solve some good puzzles, I just think about Volt's Cave for instance.

I never understood the reasoning behind Semi-manual mode's "attack then run back" thing
To activate long range arts like pheonix.
I believe the development teams behind the two franchises had a history (of perhaps being the same people to some extent).
The constant camera panning back and forth would be too annoying for me. But I do appreciate the art style and what they were going for with a more dynamic action RPG.
that annoy me as well
All tales of do that if you don't play the manual mode....
+ClessAlvvein Exactly. Lol
more or less yes like 3000+ years later. with the worlds one again separated. (Don't why they just are)
i still want the psp version to bad it never came out over here
Never played This Tales of game. does it takes place in sylvarant?? O.o
Dejap, the guy who translated this, didnt even get the english names of the artes correct. "Psion Bolt" is actually called Demon Fang in america; It's called Demon God Sword in japan though...

Usdiuadn Njsknadk star kcean
Easier said than done, but you're right
This game ran better than I remember. Is the GBA port inferior?
Did you make this version yourself?
Nope, it's the original version of the game, for the SNES.
Thanks for the reply
The only tales games I like are TOP and Tales of Eternia. Hated both TOTA and TOS. The music is just so beautiful in TOP.
Fuck random encounters! Long life chrono trigger!
wdym

reverse it, Symphonia is the prequel to this game.
I loved this game, but I wish summons and spells didn't pause the battle.
@taeasgj snes version interwebs look it up lol
lol, even the menus and interface are the same
Holy shit, this version of the battle system looks nothing like the version in Abyss or Symphonia...
Nothing..... really? It's exactly the same battle system between ToP and ToS. Abyss just add the free run and fof circle.
***** So where's the 3rd dimension Symphonia had
This is SNES, it's expected to be drastically diffrent
You can't really use the 3rd dimension in ToS. (Abyss was the first to do this).

WOW all the character look sooo different except chester.....weird
the problem is that the game "feels" like it'll be a classic at the beginning, but after you time travel and meet Klarth, the story, battle system, and plot become completely unbearable. with three party members you realize just how stupid the AI is (Mint literally will use ALL her MP in one fight casting that dumb ass hammer spell over and over again unless you just tell her not to use MP at all, which in turn makes her worthless).
TheKing0167 Can't you just disable her use of Pow Hammer through the menu? Or could you not do that in this version of the game?
gamerprince1999 You can disable any spell and choose your party’s tactics too in the SNES version.
ur kidding right?...
+Guilherme Souza Weeaboo Alert
NOOB. You can select the spells and the strategy of both casters...
Some us also just like to control everything manually LOL
you clraely havent gotten far enogh to realize that most people dont want to do that because most SNES AIs are stupid
thats not the game ;) thats just you not understanding how to play it :)
