Aquarium filters are designed to run 24/ 7. But based on bio load we have to run the filter. If there is only 1 gold fish in 500 liters tank there is no point of running filter. We can run filter 15 days once or monthly once. So based on fishes count, bio load generated, temperature, we have to run filter. In my opinion there is no need to run filter continuously. Switch of the filter at night. There is an oxygen test kit available in market. You can check oxygen level in tank and based upon that you can run the filter to if you thing oxygen is not enough. Dont think of water clarity it depands on many factor.
