Often this suffix in Russian is really a diminutive, here it is rather affectionate. Not so much "a little river" as "my sweet river".
Rechenka is not little river, it is just tender appeal to the river.

В древней Руси река считалась границей между нашим миром и миром мёртвых. Девушка шла к реке и молилась чтобы подали какой-то знак с того света. Она поёт "не колыбнется", это значит что нет ответа, нет благословения. Так же "дитя" это брат девушки, он шел в церковь чтобы просить и молиться о том же. Она не топиться пошла, а просить благословения на брак с нелюбимым человеком накануне свадьбы "коней то полон двор, а гостей то полна горница". Вот так)
