- Опубликовано: 26 сен 2024
- Recorded April 24, 1969 at Fillmore West. Long before Led Zeppelin II
This song was known at the time as "Killing Floor". Features the Howlin' Wolf Smokestack Lightning intro. I know this version is on RUclips a lot, but none of the other videos of the song are edited at all.

I played this at full volume today and it was so loud my next door neighbours called the police. Ten minutes later, the police arrived, heard the music and arrested my next door neighbours.
Do it again, this time dance with the police!
Somehow THAT joke never gets old
@@josephbusuttil3030 IKR?
Yeah! Thanks for the laugh... :)
😂
The first 50 seconds of this is better then most bands entire concert
@DH he is right
@DH In this case it's right!🤔
@DHHis happens to be right you dumbass!🤬💩🤣👎🏻
@DH Just STFU already.
The chemistry is evident
As a bassist, I stand in awe of JPJ. His performance on the album version is my all-time favourite bass performance... to hear him vamp it here was uplifting.
me too brother….it's my favorite song and bassline….i listen to it as loud as i can, i takes me off to another world…I love every single note….
Have you ever heard of the bass player Willie Weeks and his phenomenal work on the album " Donñy Hathaway Live" . He also did studio work for many rockers . His solo on the aforementioned song is regarded as the finest on record ?
I agree.
can we all just appreciate the uploader of this vid, think that he is spending his free time working on editing the sound of this video and a lot of other videos on his channel and getting nothing in return, shows how much of a fan he is
I'M HEARING YA MATE.
I APPRECIATE IT 100%.
ROCK ON BITCHES !!
Thanks bud, you did a great job!
You bet! The clarity on Jones' bass licks is better than sitting in the front row. Well, maybe.
What's with all the surprise about Jones bass playing?
Like you didn't know he was this good already?
Maybe because bass is more low down in the mix on the records.
@@kevinindublin If you have the barry diament CDs from the 80s you will have no problem hearing bass.
My late husband played bass in a number of local bands and really taught me a greater appreciation of the bass in a song. I’m a singer at heart so the rest was accompaniment. But now I re-focus on the bass and REALLY hear it.
JOJ was very under-rated (as are bassists as a whole). He can kill a bass line!!
I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but I think Jones is the most talented musician in the band.
@@mb13972 Nope, I'm gonna more or less agree! They're all really skilled, but JPJ plays so many instruments so good, it's just incredible. Also he's not appreciated enough imo
It's kinda cool how the bass tone cuts right through this whole song, Jpj was a friggin legend and in my opinion is sometimes a little too underrated
stop at “. . . legend”
Underrated by who? Name them.
Peter Townsend of the who is a huge fan of John Paul Jones. He said that John Paul Jones is the first basis to actually use a pic so he basically invented it. He sad that the bass player of his band John Entwistle and John Paul Jones two best place players in rock and roll. Well they are certainly awesome since the last 30 or 40 years there has been some really good ones come about. And to me the bass guitar is a huge huge part of rock and roll.
All epoca erano due soli veramente top master del basso John Baldwin cioè jpj .. e Gary thain che poi suono con hurap
Love it all but the bass so stands out! One band I’m so glad I saw back in the day ‘77🤩👏🏼
I read a comment somewhere about this recording that said something like "it feels like you're sitting right next to John Paul Jones". Great stuff
The cake is a lie.
Bass was usually low down in the mix on the records, esp. from LZ IV onwards, so that's not a bad thing.
@@kevinindublin I suspect this is John Paul Jones direct from his amps from the soundboard. The vocals and lead I think are leakage I'm not sure. Back in those days I don't think the directional mics could block out the rest of the band like today, I could be wrong though. His bass line would be strong but the rest of the band would still be audible
Bonzo absolutely killing it with those kick drum triplets
There will never be another rock band like Led Zeppelin
Jonesy got my ears pregnant
EYE CAN FULLY UNDERSTAND WHY !! THIS IS ORGASMIC AS !!
EARGASMIC INFUSION.
yeah man!!
And you loved it!!
SAME
Jonesy and Bonzo the best rytham section in rock ever! No contest! Page is shredding it! To bad you can't hear him that good!
Jhon Paul Jones just makes you want to learn how to play Bass f...ing right...
this song is the reason I started learning bass guitar, it was exactly a year ago that i got ahold of my first bass guitar
it is cool to play bass?
Mark Mace The mid-section of this tune, where Jonsey is just groovin' made me pick up the bass.
I first heard this song in 1985 at the age of twelve. It, along with Ramble On (ok, and Duck Dunn's character in The Blues Brothers) are the sole reasons I ever picked up a bass. And I'm still playing.
Mark Mace I started today. Really Mark
Man jonesey is slick as silk even in the beginning, he's a master
Shit, Bonzo's bass drum pedal took a hammering that night! Triplets all over the place ....
That was his signature move
Really? as in bass pedal triplets, not drumsets triplets wth bad peddle?
Vague
They could have made the entire Zep II album this one jam, both sides, and it would have sold millions. Total ear porn.
Robert's vocal range is from a different planet here
Fun fact about this show (april, 24 1969 at the Fillmore West): that night Jonesy's bass amplifier had some issues and few minutes before this song, in the middle of "As long as i have you" it became unmanageable, so he had to stop and fix it, so during fixing, Page and Bonham started jamming while Plant sang on Diddley/Dixon's "You can't judge a book by the cover" adding fun lyrics about the equipment problem
Bella chicca questa, grazie tanto!
Great bootleg
The first 50 seconds should've been part of the album version too, sounds so good
That bass is jamming !
Bonham made that band sound so clever. What an amazing guy.
My favorite Zeppelin time of all time. But then again, how on earth can you really pick a favorite? Bass gets me every time.
THIS is the one .. right you are 😉 the real Zep in nutshell, pure genius
Jonesy has a ton of tracks that he shines on, but this recording was meant for him, he hits you in the face right from the start and doesn't stop until the very end...beautiful
Interesting how this remains one of my more popular uploads..
Led Zeppelin Rarities because it's a rarity ;)
The upload remains the same.
Led Zeppelin Rarities can you find Ramble On, the acoustic version ? I was so bummed when it got pulled down. Thanks !!!

It is the very best version of the lemon song live
Listen to the one from 3 days later at the same venue. April 27th, it’s even better than this
My God that bass!!! Jonesy was a magician on the Jazz Bass. And 9 people have no soul.
This concert and the April 27 concert at the Fillmore are FILTHY! Young Page’s and the rest of the band’s goal was to take your fricking head off. How unbelievable was JPJ on these blues rock tunes? So much more powerful than Jack Bruce and Cream in my opinion. Check out the April 27, 1969 at the Fillmore West for comparison.
Cream doesn’t compare to the raw energy that zeppelin had
I always thought that! A step in the evolution of Cream.
My bad - this is from April 24 1969 Fillmore West
@@jameshayes6366 Right you are ;) -- but imagine for a while JPJ would have to sing while playin bass, like Jack Bruce did... puts it in another perspective, doesn´t it ? 😅 No, there is no winner... they were both perfect, these two bands .. Cream predated Zep, and had many numbers Zep would hardly ever play right...
I hope Johnsey reads comments under zeppelin vids to see that’s he’s still worshiped as the god he is.
"A great band always had a great drummer and a great bassist." Nuff said.
My God!! John's bass foot- it's like he was playing a double pedal. So incredibly funky and what a feel!!
Robert has the uncanny ability to make his voice sound like another instrument. Incredible
Jonesy is just the man on this version
dear gawd that bass line is epic
Woah! Lovely hearing JPJ mixed up front. See why Led Zeppelin was so bloody good. 4 x outstanding muso's.
John Paul Jones is an absolute beast. what a great improvisor!
Just think of it - only a couple days after this show they recorded Lemon Song in LA, as we know it from the 2nd album...
and it is all here, if you listen
Their most powerful statement - wild, raunchy and true to the bone.. this is Zep for me, and I was never hit so hard
like when I heard it for the first time, in 1971 or so... aged 11, I knew this is what I want to play, and I do still...
I found a pair of boxer shorts with lemons all over it. Figured it had to be a Zep fan that designed it and yep, I bought them.
KILLIN FLOOR MY JAMMMMM
John Paul Jones. F***ing Titanic!
the "spank" of that bass drum!!!
Dynamite that this was captured in such fidelity! Thank you for sharing.
after 40 plus years of the mighty zep they can still make me groove. it takes all four talents and the right chemistry as a dj said many years ago they can rock your socks off then turn around and mellow you out.
i love the vocal in the intro!!! and thank you for making the bass and drumms lound in this. i love hearing what john paul jones can do
Great version!
Love hearing the rhythm section so up front ~ Zeppelin at their full force...
Touring America with somethin' ta prove!
This is the sound that took over from the 60s Psychedelic Bands
When unknown English band Led Zeppelin first toured America, they played at rock promoter Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore East, N.Y.C. After six previous weeks of world-of-mouth rave reviews, Zeppelin wound up opening for the Heavy Rock band headliners, Iron Butterfly, who it could be argued, where the Zeppelin of the day. When Led Zeppelin played their set, they blew The Iron Butterfly off the stage. Basically Zeppelin was so powerful, they out "heavied" Butterfly. As one story goes, Zep manager Peter Grant was purported to have said 'Looks like The Zeppelin shot down the Butterfly'...
Thanks for sharing!
Proved it pretty quickly.
My favorite version is the Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, 27 April 1969. The show in general is amazing!
"Wow" is all I can say! Greatest band ever.
that opening riff...god dam!!!!! and Jonesy makes it so sweet...plant singing it too...dam, these guys were indeed the best
Best bass player ever so underrated
that intro is fucking AWESOME!
The song is one of my 2 favorite songs by Zep. The other is "For Your Life". Both are highly emotional and bluesy. For people who don't know, it was inspired by Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" which he wrote and performed in the 30s. It also inspired Howlin' Wolf's and Jimi Hendrix's "Killing Floor". They are basically the same song from the particular angle of each artist.
Fantastic. Wow. All four of them on fire.
Bonham was just unreal
Insane live version ....awesome
Those first 50 seconds are pure musical ecstasy. Should’ve been it’s own song!
It already was. So much of what they played was "borrowed."
@@matthewatwood8641 what song is it if I may ask?
@@RicardoMartinez-zj7bv Killing Floor. Several other artists covered it, (Howlin' Wolf, Hendrix & Clapton famously, right?), but Zeppelin changed the name & pretended it was theirs. Outside that, their entire first two albums & most of their third were covers of blues, folk, & country. Great, but passing it off as your own is another thing.
@@matthewatwood8641 I totally agree I'm watching a video that covers exactly what they "borrowed" it's crazy how exact some of the similarities are
@@matthewatwood8641 The Moby Dick copy, hit the most, that's just crazy
Lemon Song: the best performance of John Paul Jones, the same with Dazed and Confused. Robert and Jimmy should give more space to this great bass player.
fucking brilliant! JPJ's bass lines are freaking amazing.
I'm surprised how good the recording on this is as far as the rhythm section goes.
Robert was a real find..
much better mix jpj is featured here and he does not disappoint, people were being blown away by this band in 1969, nobody else was even close to zeppelin when they broke out. they were showing the rock world how it was supposed to be done.
5:04 Why don't you roll over baby, see what it's like on the other side....
Plant just layin' it down....I wanna be your back door man lil' girl....yea...
Wow! 🤩 You said it....
The 1st time I heard this was in 2016, it inspired me to seek out numerous Bootlegs, about $3,500 worth. I hadn't heard a LZ Bootleg in 35 years. In the early 80s I found the 1977 LA Forum gigs and the 1970 Vancouver gig MUDSLIDE. I was Amazed that there were so many shows out there, the Quality of many were Mind Blowing. LZ Rarities has some of the Best I've heard,
" They cleaned up Nice ". Seriously, Quite a Talent. ✌
Wow; thanks man: had no idea that this was from the intro. of Smokestack Lightening; thanks for including the link to it as well.
Fabulous Bass line... great John Paul Jones
One of my favorite CDs. They're just jamming, pre-release sort of thing.
Definition or Rock & Roll- this songs just crushes , JPJ on bass, the damm thing is going airborne.
_Oh, the humanity....._
Total Attitude!!! Absolutely incredible
Unbelievable! 👏
When im feeling down, i listen to these rarities.
LED ZEPPELIN FOREVER! LONG LIVE LED ZEPPELIN!
Such a sweet roll at 1:40
ItsParsic Bonham
They had got it together as an improv act without a match without even a hit record word of mouth
Ok uploaded. I’m just taking the time to make sure you know how appreciated you are. Thanks for this and being a fan of the fckin best musicians of all time. No 1 live did it better. Tks 🙏
Nunca me cansaré de escuchar este maldito rock and roll ...los maestros Led Zepp...
PHENOMENAL !!!
Those days Robert had such a powerful voice. I was 2 and had no idea Led Zeppelin existed. I was born a decade too late.
I was only 5 and felt the same way. LOL
Me to 71 to late on it now 😁
UNBELIEVABLE! A true treasure!
no rock band had more soul. jpj so amazing
they were on this night....
The most BadAss intro ever! Jonsey's bass and Bonzo's drums!!
I really wish Robert's vocal and Jimmy's guitar were louder on this, this would've been the best version of the lemon song...I still think it is the best cause of jonsey's bass.
If I am not mistaken this is also the first performance page did with his Les Paul alternating between the tele and the paul
As far as my extensive list of favorite bassists goes, it's Jaco, John Paul Jones, and Jerry Scheff occupying those top three slots...with AUTHORITY. I try to emulate them as much as possible when I play.
I absolutely love this opening riff, it’s killer!
Just realized I made a pun because of the whole “killing floor” thing.... 👀
Check out Howlin Wolf’s electric album, it’s the riff from smokestack lightning.
This version is a fuckin' gem! Thank you!
love this, thanks for sharing!
4 gifted and talented musicians have created a supergroup: LED ZEPPELIN
ジョンポールジョーンズのベースがたっぷり聞ける。たまりません!
This channel rocks! Thanks for the content!
This sounds like the "Bass track" of the live recording
Oh my what a F ing great sound
Too bad Plant is so far back in the mix.
Erik Morton to understand the band, the mix can help those, who don't care to look into that
That, being the band
@@startervisions What? Vocals are an instrument too you know.
The fret board on that Fender Jazz Bass must of been sizzling after this number
This is beastially good!
absurdly fantastic ! Tasty ... and yes... Jonesy owned this .
first time I heard bass was while listening to this song. bass as a melodic instrument in its own right. bass done right!
Incredible
The best part of the 17 people who didn’t like this video, ran down their mommas leg.
Amazing
They also did sittin and thinkin a rare primal version of since I’ve been living you with different words
the juice just ran ..
Im Speechless !!! This is sick !!!!!!!! Off the fucking charts !!!!!
They performed "Killing Floor/Lemon Song" when I saw them performing as The New Yardbirds at Liverpool University in 1968. That was a performance that blew everybody away. So raw and powerful!
did you by any chance record the concert or know anyone that did?
It's their cover of Killing Floor. That's all. "Lemon Song" was to avoid paying royalties.
Would that mean that they had The Lemon Song available for the first album? So, They kept it off the first album to save it for the second album? Why would they do that?
My point is that when they were performing as The New Yardbirds they hadn't recorded the first album yet. They recorded the first album when they were done with The Yardbirds Euro tour that they were obligated to do. Am I calling you out? Kinda.🦍💨🤢🤮.. 🙃
@@matthewatwood8641
That's all? All legalities aside, when Zeppelin covered a song they made it their own tenfold.
@@BokFrak You just can't accept the fact that they were dishonest and they robbed other artists. A lot of there early songs they really did not make their own as much as you claim they did. No more than a really good cover band. They developed creatively as they went along and ended up doing a lot of innovating, but in the beginning it's mostly just really good versions of the songs that they stole. I'm not discounting their talent or skill. I'm saying that they f***** over a lot of the musicians that gave them the inspiration and material to start with. They should have been more honest from the beginning, and I'm pretty sure that they would all agree.
No necesitaba ninguna confirmación. Es la Banda más grande y creativa de la historia. Gracias por esta gema sonora. 👏🏻
