Thanks great lesson. Signals dramatically improve your defense. When I first learned them, it felt like I was cheating. Telling my partner what to lead. Cheers
A note: E making a serious slam try with at least 3 sure losers, was probably a mistake, revealing too much of his hand on the way. A practical 4sp directly after 2sp was prob better way to create an extra trick. Or if you want: Using side suit try as game seeker is fine for game search. It may occasionally be useful too as slamseeker, but as we see - may easily give the situation away... So, if you hope there may be a slam in the cards, sometimes the best way is just to throw it in, and hope for the best; including defence plaing in the dark and hopefully making some misguess.
I agree. Even if partner is bringing the king and queen of clubs to the table, east still has a loser in diamonds and two losers in hearts. If I had to guess, I'd say that east meant 3c as a game try and then reevaluated the hand and decided to go to game despite partner declining the invitation. But anything is possible!
S overcalled 2D, indicating she had at least 5D and at least two honours (a good suit), so N knew they had at least 8D between them and Dummy held 4 high D, so E could only have 1D. N knew that if S continued D that E could trump in if S led more D’s and that Dummy’s high D’s would then be promoted.
Our starting point with attitude when partner leads the ace against a suit contract is to give positive attitude under two conditions: We have the queen or we have a doubleton and can trump. Before giving the hand any real thought, north should give negative attitude because they don't meet either of those conditions. North should now consider what they know. The information from the hand (knowing south has the ace and king of diamonds with five, west has the queen and jack with four and that therefore east has a low singleton, only reinforces the decision to tell partner not to continue.

Agreed! My mind was blown when we first learned them.
Instructive, logical, and charming!
Thank you for watching!

how did partner figure out that diamond is not a good suit to play?
