512, 917, and T70. The holy trinity!
Indeed
When we just knew enough about aerodynamics to give the cars a beautiful shape, before they started sprouting wings and intakes everywhere.
The combination of the engine sound and manual shifts is absolutely incredible> What a car!
I remember seeing the late Jo Bonnier crash and somersault a T70 Mk 3 at Brands Hatch all the way from the exit of Graham Hill bend to the infield at Clearways. As it went it shed first the bodywork then wheels, suspension and the entire engine and gearbox assembly. Fearing the worst the marshalls were quickly on the scene to see if Jo was still with us. Apart from a few bruises and a small cut on one hand he was ok. His first words to the astounded rescuers was "I feel dizzy!" Eric Broadly designed one tough mutha of a race car!
I’ve always liked the Lola T70 Mk3 beautiful racer.
Lola knows how to make a race car T 70 was so successful for the company.
Ahhh Jo Bonnier's car. Lovely restoration.
I remember these from my teens as they were hammering around Oulton Park. The T70 remains my all-time favourite racing car.
"The T70 remains my all-time favourite racing car." Ditto that my friend.
And written on the side was "Things would go better with a bit more poke".
A guy down the street from me has a Lola T70 I just love to hear him drive by. Don't need to see him to know it was him.
This Lola is the most beautiful race car of them all !!!!!!!!!! That Yellow really pops...............
How could any body not like this? Awesome! I saw some Lola Can Am and F5000 at Laguna Seca in the '70's!! Also a few at Sear Point.
I'd like to see side-by-side comparison between the Lola and the Ford GT40 maybe even put both on the track one against the other
What symphony does that motor offer! I imagine it is a car that you feel in your hands and feet, vehicles that you have to know how to feel, hear and more, for a perfect orchestration.
Beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful piece of kit...
The fact that they keep doing them is a miracle and amazing
The T70 was one of the best looking cars of its era. Beautiful lines.
Thanks for a great drive. That car is a beast !
Tears of joy, what a machine!!
Tears of sorrow, I’ll never drive one…
One of my favourite's
Andrew,
love to see you drive the Jaguar XKSS that won the Macau GP in 1960, driven by my late father. Assuming you can find it!
Superb! I'd like to drive a kit car version on road.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
Andrew, please get yourself behind the wheel of a late Mclaren M8! :-)
My other favorite.
Great restore..nice run in it
In period the 305 cu Chevvy was good for 450 bhp. I cannot believe that it is now good for 650bhp with points ignition and Lucas mechanical injection.
It seems the engine builder was one Al Bartz, his formula racing engines at that time produced 550 hp. Not to be confused with his Trans Am small blocks. Very complex but interesting story.
He previously did 8.5 liter Chevy motors for the same owner, so he was a 'special' client. This was a 'special' motor.
@@andykerr3803 It was Kenny Colman, UK.
Nothing like a yellow sports car with big V8 sound.
That's got to be a London type sky. LOL
I think I just had an eargasem
I just found this video so my comment is a little late in coming. I'm not sure I have a favorite fantasy car but the Lola T70 comes as close as I can come. If I won the big Lottery this car would be the first thing I bought for myself.
Lola is my car of choice***** The very best** Although the audio could've been a little better but great video. Long Live Lola!
Unos de los coches más bonitos de toda la historia
Would love to see you drive a Ford GT MK4, the MK4 particularly. Great Vid guys! This are dream machines!!!
Dear Goodwood/Andrew please continue these! Maybe do a series? SO much better than the new Top Gear
Now We're Talkin!
thats the advantage of an exact replica of a car like this you can push it as hard as you want
Oh, Small Block Chevy, how I love thee.....
i know this is an original but the advantage of a really good replica is you can drive it hard not as priceless and new parts won't break
Please do a Lola T-70 spyder....or T160 CanAm. G'Day Goodwood mates....from South Australia.
Iconic car, as Porsche 917K and Ferraris 330P4 and 512M! Absolutely beautiful!!!
even more exotic imo
Stunning!!!
Would love to see you drive some old competition Italian marks like:
Cisitalia
Alfa (GTV) or
Abarth.
These aren't monster cars like the Lola, but would provide nice counterpoint.
Also Mazda 787b, mentioned below would be orgasmic.
Thanks!
I had a ride in one of these on some New York highways.
I do not recall the Lola T70 in closed cockpit form as being particularly successful. The T70 at Le Mans in 1967, powered by Aston-Martin and driven by one John Surtees lasted for something like one hour before croaking. Of course the open-cockpit version, one of the most beautiful cars of all time IMHO, was more successful, winning the 1966 Can-Am championship.
The one success the T70 Mk 3B had in international endurance racing was at the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours race that was entered by Roger Penske and driven by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons.
I just re-read the section about this Lola model in Donohue's bio, "The Unfair Advantage," where the Penske team did a lot of development work with the Mk 3B to make it competitive with the Porsche 908s, especially so with the suspension springs, where they got a custom set made from the engineering guys at Chevrolet (sshh! Chevy wasn't suppose to be involved in racing at that time). The Penske team won the Daytona race by outlasting the Porsche and Ford GT40s.
The Sebring race the car was competitive with the Porsches and a Ferrari prototype, but dropped out of the race with a fail suspension; in part due to the stresses from the Daytona race and the rough track surface at Sebring. Prior to the race the Penske team had concerns about the suspension arms not looking particularly strong. The Jo Bonnier entered Mk 3B also dropped out of the race with a similar problem.
The Penske team couldn't race at Le Mans that year because the car and transporter were stolen; where there wasn't the time and resources to make another effort from scratch. Just as well as the Le Mans effort in '69 could have distracted the Penske team from the Trans Am series that year, which could have cost them the championship with the Chevy Camaro.
I am jealous on you !
In 1969, were they not using a 5.0L Chev rated at ~450hp?
McLaren M6 or M8 would be great. Bizza 5300 GT. Chevy V8 pumps out about 500 but that's brutal just the same.
OMFG! Love!
Porsche 917K or Ferrari 330 P4. Thank you. :)
I would love to see see you drive a 90s SCCA trans am mustang 750hp roush v8
For perspective. Against
Lemans cars from same period!
What a sexy car...!!!
Donnot forget the old carbage at the time.
This is just crazy....where are all the Lolas from the George Lucas movie THX 1138?
I would love to see you drive the Group 5 Ford Capri...!?
What became of the recently built alloy 427 powered Mk.IIIbs?
A pity there is no place for them in Historics...
I'd like to see one against your 1980s 956/962 and XJR cars
Back to the future!!
Could have been..
The Aston V-8 was a disaster...
SAD!

This question reveals a little ignorance on my part but, was that nice whining sound from straight cut gearing?
I think you are right.
How about any 1960s Plymouth or Dodge NASCAR stock car
Cars I would like to see you drive? Porsche 917/30!
chevy sb or bb?
Mr R8 around Curborough. We can compare times :)
How about a Ferrari 330P4? The original Ford GT's rival back in the day. Haven't seen one in a while and I think I'd like to!
I know this is a late reply, but I believe there is only one original 330 P4 in existence, and I'm not quite sure what the owner's policy with it would be.
@@AlastorTheNPDemon 4 actually. One is in progress
@@mikatamminen2786 Alright, that's news to me. I saw a _Petroliscious_ video on the P4, and its owner said that his was the only existing original example - the rest are replicas.

Maybe you could take out the Chaparral 2E? They are probably hard to find, but it would be so awesome.
Yes, quite hard to find. There was only ever one chassis, which kept being updated.
+Paul Standeven do we know where it could be?
The 2E is in Midland Texas at Rattlesnake Raceway or there about.
mazda 787b please!
You want to kill that man?
And the GT40 PLEASE
Lolas and Mc Larens V8 could beat Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512M back in their hey-day 1970-71!
Lotus 23B maybe not as brutal as the GT or T70, but lovely nibble car.
Looks like he’s still trying to paddle shift lol

great video, love to see you drive a Renault Alpine A442 B Le Mans with that V6 engine

Not likely. The vast majority of those cars were powered by small block Chevrolet engines, most of them built by Traco Engineering.

Come on dude-put your foot in it. Grass is growing on your tires. Drive this car like you mean it.

A replica car is always not a real classic car, so driving today is not comparable.

fabulous car. although they run nowhere near 650bhp, the engine will be around 520 bhp at best. in period they ran less than 500
Like you know what the engine has in it , give us a break buddy.
63GTDriver I do actually. This is the ex jo bonnier car running a Chevrolet 302 as they all did in period . and I know the horsepower figures because I know the guy that dyno runs these engines for the masters series.
It'd be pretty interesting to know what exactly they put in this thing, but 650 HP would be quite a stretch for a normally-aspirated five-liter V8 of the era. That was the level of power the Porsches and Ferraris were achieving with the 917 and 512, and it's why they started to leave the others behind.
Justin Simms i doubt the naturally aspirated ferrari and porsche had that much, but definitely more than this, but the turbo 917/10 and 917/30 had ridiculous power.
Fair point. 650 HP is just really difficult to do with a carbureted, normally aspirated five liter engine that you expect to last any length of time. I think Penske and Traco Engineering claimed 600HP for the V12 engine in their Ferrari 512M.
My own son.sebastian was feel sad.because my dor is brocken. Specialy until now he cannot see his smale brorther Alexander. Because no want to leasening about his family probleme. 375GTB my Dads 302 in 1970 made more than that on the dyno. Mind you it was running close to 13.5:1 but it made close to 520HP with fully ported heads and 900cfm carb turning 8500rpm. But I guess what ever the rule book states your limits for the engine are directly limits your HP.

Les caméras son nullissimes.
wrong type of driver to put in one of these machines.Martin Brundle or Johnny Herbert would be better qualified,as both are LeMans winners.
650 hp from a 5.0 liter? That's a 302.
I'm skeptical..
A few on here wondering also. New 5 liter components, a 429 Ford Boss originally at about 490 cid in Lolas, or they changed fuel. I wish he had shown the motor. Doubt it was a 427 SOHC (619-645 hp), but 650 seems out of reach of the stock motor. This motor is really free revving and responsive too. I am betting broad range power big block.
@@andykerr3803 he states its a 5 liter.
I've built 5.0 liters.. 650 hp is a bit ambitious .
@@fredmertz1791 Hi Fred, I did agree of course. There is lots of tricks available today, even fuel changes. Quite a few commented on here. Some guys knowing their stuff, some not. I only built up big blocks to any degree.
Of course the European ruling body made them illegal, but I believe it was only for 1970. Check the comments here again. One gentleman knew the car (at one point in time) and said it was a Chevy small block. Again, it's only an opinion of mine, but this car was raced and won in a vintage class. It is supposed to be original. I don't believe so. I do know Chevy's pretty well, and even though you'll see Smoky Yunick poking around the pits in these videos... 650hp? It just ain't so, Joe. ;-)
At some point for drag racing, with all the power up high... Maybe. It's no accident they didn't show the motor, even eith covers on, it could be a 3 valve motor. I think the owner wanted to win races and save money. Fords cost serious money. Some original cars did have up to 8.5 liter V8s based on the Chevy or Boss 429. The 427 SOHC Ford was around but not sure if it ever found it's way into these... Fun to speculate! It made between minimum 619 HP up to 645 in another version. I did come across the original owner's car, it may have been a second one... Wait :-)
His name was Bonniers, or close to that...
Cheers 🍻
@@fredmertz1791 So, I checked out Jo Bonniers car in 68. It did have an 8.5 liter Chevy that he wanted even bigger. His engine builder was one Al Bartz, a real super talented guy. He actually made a 304 cubic inch cross ram motor that GM only put in Canadian Pontiac Firebirds. These were super successful in Trans Am racing. It is a sure thing that if Jo were a client for the big blocks, he would have had him do a small block. His small blocks were also used in Formula racing. He was a specialist in heads, they usually looked like stock cast iron and actually did put out 550 hp back then.
There were a lot of connections obviously, to GM, top builders, he worked for Traco and Hillborn, but was considered to have the edge on them. So many brilliant drivers used his motors... He was considered the best kept secret. So certainly 600 hp would not be a stretch, and if they found 'better' fuel and modern upgrades in material and mods... 650 hp might be possible. For sure that motor is an absolute museum piece on its own. Wish they said more.
I might contact the present owner as I found the actual machinist that did the porting. I am guessing they focused on "swirl" more than just straight volume flow...
Cheers Fred 🍻
He drive like my woman 😇 .
