no worries. under normal situations most people, regardless of native language, are more mindful of how we speak when talking to someone who may not know the language perfectly. your English is really good by the way.. . better then my Russian. I can read some Russian but only speak much less.
i would wonder myself as lost could be either dead or cant find him. Without them explaining or you knowing he was sick ahead of time, you would not know which one they mean by lost
