I'm currently studying abroad, and I went with the sim card! I agree, its the best option for anyone who is traveling to a specific country for a long period of time! Plus its a great way to keep in contact with any locals that you meet during the trip :)
We do the local Sim cards and hot spot it and it serves us enough. When we need to upload videos we wait tell we have internet, although we only upload 2 videos a month, but there big files since we include the happenings of a week or more in an episode. We are driving from California to Panama. We have even been lucky. our Sim card and data plan from Guatemala still works in El Salvador
I love all the tips you guys give. All of your videos are so easy and pleasant to watch sometimes I'm even afraid to start!Every single time I find myself in this RUclips black hole and end up re-watching your previous videos countless times :) Can't wait for the next one ! No pressure :p Kristen, you should also make a video explaining how the hell you keep getting prettier and prettier ! Siya, you lucky fella! :) Thank you guys!! Hugs from a brazilian expat in Poland !:)
I have Google Project Fi as my phone carrier and they don't charge roaming. You literally just turn roaming on for your phone, and you use your phone as if you were at home. No extra fees. I recently went on a cruise that stopped in Honduras, Belize, and Mexico and was able to use my phone in Honduras and Mexico. They have 100+ countries with coverage. The only downside is that they do not have unlimited data plans. It's $10 per GB. So if you're uploading videos or streaming a lot, it might not be feasible, but for a casual Facebook/Instagram surfer like me, it's definitely enough! :)
Local SIM all the way, all the time. It is INFINITELY cheaper than those other options. Something like SkyRoam is only necessary if you do super data heavy WORK on the regular - by this I mean, connecting with your laptop. Otherwise running a mobile hotspot from your phone with a local sim wins. Something like a roaming plan is okay if you are going for
Kristen & Siya We're going to Ecuador for 10-14 days in 2020. Have to save the money. 🤑 I'm thinking we'll do the portable WiFi device because we won't be using the internet all the time and I like that it's unlimited for 24 hours. I'll probably use it the most when we visit the Galapagos Islands to live stream. Since we are going to mainly be using our phones for pics and videos though, should I keep the data off and put it on airplane mode?
Thanks so much for this advice. I`ll use it on my next trip. There are so many gaps in my tech knowledge and you just helped me fill in one very important one. I just think it`s so much better than having to find wifi spots.
If I go to the states for a longer period of time I get a sim card there. If for shorter I just turn off roaming and use wifi spots. But when I really need it anywhere else I buy a limited amount of data from my Swedish operator. (Expensive, though, yuck)
Kristen, which one do you find yourself using most often? I'd prefer the cell phone by itself, just so that I don't have to carry another device with me or worry about sim cards.
So, if you can pay for it with your phone service then you do not need the other items...right? So, if your phone covers it then that would be the best option for data and wifi?
I have Tmobile (from the US) and they have this thing where they're connected to most countries around the world and if you're on the plan, you get free data and text and 20 cents a minute calls pretty much all over the world. Sometimes its a hit or miss depending on the country, but its worked well for me so far. For some countries, it'll be only 2G data, but I've had 4G data in Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong before. Because its so convenient, I rarely need another option, but I do rely on wifi a lot at hotels and cafes (which is pretty much all over the world now). I haven't bought a sim card in years lol Oh, and its also great to be off grid sometimes! No one can bother you and you can take in all the sights and culture around you.
You guys forgot to mention about FLEXROAM... I was using it around every where. I'm a airline pilot flying around the world...and I can say... maybe the best option nowadays.
How does that work for the sim card with gsm vs Cdma. From what I understand south American is gsm. But I have a gdma phone (verizon). Will the sim trump all that biz?
wait, with the Skyroam you said first that it could be used by several people at the same time, but then you said you had to decide who got to use the internet...??? kinda confused here jeje
+Angr. 268 it can be used by several devices at the same time but if one person takes the device and leaves, then only that person or those connected around him can use it. Just like your wifi at home. As soon as you leave your house, you no longer have connection.
Or what you do is you by to skyroam don't forget Skyrim allows of the five people to be connected at one time but if you really want to hug data on one buy another one for your spouse
I love skyroam I wished I had a plan for $10 a gig you can have as many gigabytes as you wish as long as your credit card is willing to pay for it as long as you're willing to pay for it I wish Skyrim would have that type of an option or dish have truly unlimited with throttle back which means another was after use at a 25 gig that's when it starts throttling not after one gigabyte it starts literally shutting you down skyroam needs to improve and I'm a firm believer in Skyrim it's the best product I bought and I love it thank you Skyrim for making such a great product make it better please
+Olivia Conant we are currently in an Airbnb right now haha. It's actually the coolest one we've ever stayed in. We are posting about it on Instagram stories if you wanna chime in (@hopscotchtheglobe and @siyazarrabi)
How do I stay connected I'll call you Google project fi skyroam and the likes of those it is a blessing to have both Google project fi and Skyrim to make sure I never run out of data anyway that's how I stay connected don't I yes I do internationally it's for me two options again Google project fi and Skyrim God bless both of them

Thank you guys. Me and my hubs are getting ready for a trip to South America and this was a big concern for me. Your advice is very appreciated.
We are so glad this video could help you. Let us know if you have any questions? What part of South America?

I remember you guys mentioning the Skyroam at the LTA summit! Seriously thinking about getting one of these! Thanks for the great tips you to.
TheTravelingClatt hey amigo. We highly recommend it. There's a link in the video description where you can order one. Where in the world are you now?
Siya Zarrabi Miami at the moment! Driving to LA in like a week! Crossing the border to Mexico too!

Awesome video, definitely keeping this in mind if I ever go on an international trip with my family! 😊
OMG, your video is so easy to understand and you answered my questions...thank you
Great advice thanks a lot
In Japan I rented a portable Wi-Fi because I didn't know much it was my first oversea travel, You can rent the portable Wi-Fi there when you arrived
I have an international plan with T-mobile, so whenever I travel I have my usual services! Plus I get service on airplanes as well! :)
+Jen Mere that's awesome! You get service from your phone provider on flights? I've never heard of this but man that's amazing
I guess they're really stepping up there game. Which is good for people who are traveling.
Awesome, thanks!
I needed this. let's just say that
If I go to the states for a longer period of time I get a sim card there. If for shorter I just turn off roaming and use wifi spots. But when I really need it anywhere else I buy a limited amount of data from my Swedish operator. (Expensive, though, yuck)
Good stuff💯.. thanks for sharing♥️
Kristen, which one do you find yourself using most often? I'd prefer the cell phone by itself, just so that I don't have to carry another device with me or worry about sim cards.
+Lindo Korchi I find that I use my international plan in the US and my skyroam more internationally
Love the tips!
This skyroam thing has taken off, seen that Josh got one too!

How to use sim slots on laptops while travelling ? Need to buy sim cards ? Is there any international sim cards that works abroad ?
You guys forgot to mention about FLEXROAM... I was using it around every where. I'm a airline pilot flying around the world...and I can say... maybe the best option nowadays.

Will those local SIM cards be safe to use? I mean no personal data being stolen some how?
Kristen & Siya, awesome info. Thank you :-)
love your hair style in this video!! :) thank you for the great information :)
Hey Kristen & Siya, I have a question for you. When you are using the sim card option what's the best app to use to call internationally?
Soul Prana Skype is what we use to call phones. But if you're calling friends with fb you can use fb messenger to call them.
Awesome! Thank you!
thumbs up,, great info..Thanks
What about a dual sim phone? couldn't you put your own "old" sim card an the international one into it?
Thanks guys - it would be good to hear about internet speed, 24 hours to upload a YT video kind of sucks :)
LOL! I remember trying to upload a few videos and it stated that it would take over 70 hours. The internet speed was quite horrendous.
Helpful!
the intro killed me!! haha I don't know why but I'm laughing so much. Love this video xo
+holisticmaya haha I'm glad. It makes me laugh too. 😁

India is giving free sim cards to people as they arrive at the airport.
When did this start happening?
Free WIFI. Free WIFI is literally the best. I blame my caffeine dependency on using coffee shops for their free WIFI while traveling!
So easy to hack into public wifi
