You teach me something every time - I have been knitting and blocking for years, but the tips about ‘staking out’ the size of the pieces, and folding before it goes in the water are new to me. And brilliant! I have an epic cable sweater and didn’t want to squash all that work, and now I know how to safely block! Thanks, Suzanne! And your sweater is stunning, I’ll def check out how to embroider next! 💕
I happened across this video after watching another of your videos and it made me chuckle. Not because of you or your work, but in one of my groups on FB just today a new knitter asked about how to block a cardigan and there were at least 30 comments "I have never blocked!" It was difficult for me to not respond "and your project pictures show just that". Blocking makes such a huge difference in the finished product! I will share your video with the woman who had asked initially. Beautiful sweater, btw.
I would have so much trouble keeping my mouth shut. Blocking is one of the best parts. I stand over mine like it’s a baby. Going back ad forward adjusting 😂
Every once in a while you find a "how to" video that is exactly what you're looking for. This was that video! Thank you! Now I have the confidence to try blocking (in pieces) for the first time.
Thank you Suzanne for making me a "wiser" knitter in the few videos I've watched of yours back to back. I'm hooked for the next few hours - you teach so beautifully and in detail. Thank you! God bless you with health and happiness always. Love from India... 💕
I’m about to block my first sweater and this tutorial definitely gave me the confidence that I can do it successfully. Thank you for such a thorough process!
I love the idea of using the string to set up the measurements! Very clever. Even though I have interlocking boards with 1" squares, your idea saves time.
I am just going to block my first knitted jumper and this is the best video I have found. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to following you. Great video. Big thumbs up.
TY! TY! TY! Ur site is very professional in AV and tutorials. I've been perusing good knitting sites for me. I don't want music, horrible AV, and constant repeats for 30-60 min videos which can b done in less than 15 min. Ur 30-60 minutes r very informative w/o repeats. I'm sorry can't join FB (my choice, not political or dogmatic or expelled). I just choose RUclips (again my own choice). So glad u r sharing thru this forum.
Thank you Suzanne! I wet blocked sweater pieces today. Wow after watching your video I paused it and went in and redid the pieces to your way. I also like how you have the measurements drawn or sewn on the table. What a great idea and makes so much sense to have a template. I am going to send a fr req on FB now that I am back. I appreciate your videos. By the way the sweater is beautiful and must have taken hours to do.
I enjoyed the instructions. I never placed my back and fronts together when blocking. I usually placed them separately; but, I will try it this way with my next sweater. Thanks so much.
Thank you! It just makes sense to me to do it this way. Once the sweater is seamed and then washed at some point in the future, it will be double decker at that time too. Happy knitting.
Gorgeous sweater. Great idea about the lines. I will use this next time I block. Normally I knit in the round but for MK I will need how to seam. FYI. As a master spinner who just taught raw fleece washing yeasterday, I will comment that you will not felt your sweater by patting. Felting comes from high pH, radical changes in water temperature and aggitation. So, a tepid wetting and patting will not cause felting. Even non superwash will not felt unless a combination of the requirements are applied.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Am subscribed. Believe it or not, I know no knitters on social media with whom to share. When I do, I will be sure to share.
You should get on Ravelry and Facebook. There are lots of knitters online. We are a friendly bunch. I have a group in each - Knitting with Suzanne Bryan - check on Facebook for us. I would love to have you join our group and you would love it too. Happy knitting.
Just jump in. Make a child or baby version to give it a try. You will love it. Be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and please share my videos with your social media friends. Happy knitting.
I guess I have made a baby sweater. It was not pieced, though. Somehow using pieces and making it adult seems scary. Can you recommend a pattern for basic pieced sweater? Thanks!
Sometimes it is easier to start with a plain vest that has side seams, picked up stitches around the armholes and neck. You can go on Ravelry and search for vests.
Suzanne I'm chuckling here. I'm thinking there aren't too many sub-zero days in Bakersfield where one could wear such a beautifully designed wool sweater. You need to flash your fashions in Minnesota!
Me too, I can hardly wait to get this sweater finished to see how it looks. I love that book. Thanks. Be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and please share my videos with your social media friends. Happy knitting.
Hi Suzanne thanks a lot for your blocking videos, I was looking for this technique on the web and I found a lot information about it, but all of them essentially talk about only wet and pin the project. You had gave me the key for a successful blocking: “Blocking is not about to stretching, it’s about to wet and carefully settle it in its final position”. Your explanation is clear and precise I love it. Now I’m going to do my first blocking. 💕
I've blocked a lot of lace, but I'm about to start my first 2 wool sweaters (2 different needle sizes, so why not?). One is knit in one piece in the round, but one is seamed. Thanks for both videos! I also love putting pins down for my measurements while the piece is soaking. Saves so much time
As always, your videos are SO well done. I'm at the stage of having to block my sweater, before joining the pieces together. For guidance, I looked up suggestions on the Internet and, BINGO, there was a link to you video. I ALWAYS trust your videos. I initially watched another one (somehow I missed seeing your link at first). But after watching yours, it just confirmed what I've always thought: You're the best!! You have coached me through SO MANY tasks/skills that I wasn't sure about. You've been like a private mentor leading me through the knitting process. I'm sure I'm one of many who have turned to you for your guidance. Thank you! You really are the best... :)
Excellent video Suzzane!! Thank you. I haven't finished a sweater I knit for my daughter a couple of years ago because I didn't want to ruin it. Now I know how to do it properly thanks to you. Using the dimensional staking method is ingenious. Also I would like to ask what type of board you are using? I have the blocking mats but I want something larger for blankets and long scarves. Thank you.
Thanks, glad to be of help. Be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and please share my videos with your social media friends. Happy knitting.

Beautiful knitting! I am just about to try my first blocking. When you join it and do the bands do you need to block the bands? When you wash the garment later do you have to block again? Fantastic tutorials, thanks
Great questions. After I seam and then add the bands. I steam the seams and bands. When washing, yes, you will need to lay it out again to its intended dimensions, taking care to not stretch the fabric while it is wet. I keep the schematics of my garments so that when I do wash and reblock, I know what the dimensions should be.
@@SuzanneBryan , thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I have used your weaving in method for the ends, very neat and have also saved your clips on doing bands and seams. Have always been disappointed with the finishing off before. Whole new world of knitting, your things are so beautiful!
Great video, I have not blocked before so this was very helpful, how did you get your final measurements? I am knitting a pattern for multiple sizes that does not include any finished measurements for any of those sizes. Thank-you.
I used the schematic. If there is no schematic you can calculate the circumference of the chest by the total stitches and stitch gauge. You can do the same for the arms. Length can be calculated by adding up the inches give plus any rows and row gauge.
