That's why I love Ashanti not only is she beautiful, but her voice is powerful and sweet at the same time without over doing it with all the extra yelling. She still keeps it soft and serene. I also love her writing ability. She's serving vocal realness

You killed it girl. This is one of my fave Chaka tunes and I’m rather protective if it but you did it justice. Not quite Chaka, but who is, except Chaka. Naturally
I always thought she had a nice voice. Really showed on her Concrete Rose Album. And every album after that. Such a shame how underrated she is. Most blk people think if you don't sing like Fantasia or Kelly Price or Whitney or Aretha then you can't sing. There are many ways of singing and she kills it in her own way. 💯💯💯

In the Blk community alot of time people gravitate towards the big gospel type belters. For me the tone is the most important part of a singers voice. I think Ashanti has an angelic tone. Aaliyah is another one who has a beautiful tone and not known for having the biggest most powerful voice. I think Whitney and Mariah are the best examples(in their prime) of female singers who had both the beautiful tone and the power/range(big vocals).

It ain't no where near close to the rich thickness of Chaka's voice! But then again there will never again be anyone that even comes close to Chaka! Ashanti was BRAVE to attempt this song! Sounds good and I am glad she is back! You go girl!

I've heard her name many times, but I can't say I know her music. I do however love Chaka and thought I'd give this a listen. I love this a lot too. Awesome that is not a " Cover" different arrangement from what Chaka does. Has a Great Jazz Vibe. Won't be the only time I come back to this one.

I think people aren't understanding when someone says Ashanti sounded great...off the back everyone is always ready to down play her or discredit her due to the way she was singing when she first came out...Yeah Ashanti isn't Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey..But she isn't a Cassie, Janet, or Ciara as everyone try's to make her out to be...Honestly...coming from a Singer myself...I would put Ashanti vocals on the same level as Alicia keys ...And no one says she cant sing...if you listen to them back to back you will understand what I'm saying...even though A.keys has a more full voice...Ashanti can hit certain notes that alot cant...give the girl her credit
I understand what you're saying but it's funny that you mention "Alicia Keys" because I have heard some people criticize her singing and I actually don't like her singing. She can play the piano and I like some of her songs...but her actual "vocals" often sound forced and like she's straining or trying really hard. In some ways, Ashanti's vocals are actually more easy on the ears if you ask me. I think Alicia Keys tries to push her voice to sound like it's stronger than it really is and that's where the "forced, strained" sound comes in. If she were to just sing soft, I think it would be okay.
Ashanti is way better than Alicia Keys (by-a-large-measure). For two reason, Ashanti sounds really great even when she hits the more naisle tones, where Alicia sounds harsh in all her tones. Ariana Grand is a bit the same but her voice has more timbre (more heard treble overtones) and her voice sound better than Alicia's but still loud and naisle. Ashanti never sounds harsh and has just the right "bight" in her voice but never to the degree that's harsh or unpleasant in any way. Some of her songs have really loud voice content but it still always sounds pleasant. Her overtones are so nice whereas Alicia hasn't got any, and her voice sounds "thick" (or "muffly") and harsh. Sorry Alicia but you look hot, though, and probably a lovely person, but I won't be streaming your music. If you want a lovely mellow voice see Gloria Estafarm (Spell) "Here We Are". Here voice is a little bit "muffly" but she just gets away with (just) enough overtones. lol
