The issue is the disrespect they have shown their paying customers, and their own lore. They have stated "there has always been female Custodes". That is demonstrably not true. If they had "pulled a Primaris" and introduced female Custodes as "look what Cawl just pulled out of his ass", then this would not be as much of a problem. Sure, people would complain, but not as many. They don't seem to realise that the lore is the *only* thing that keeps people shackled to the Warhammer troll. If they damage the lore, they weaken the hold that they have on their customers. And fewer people will give in to FOMO, must-haves, and ever-increasing prices. Sure, there will still be lots - but there will be less than there were. I'm also tired of this condescending attitude from the company at all levels. I'd had enough of my local GW store a couple weeks ago when the manager (with whom i thought i had a reasonable relationship) blatantly lied to my face about a company policy (and it was such a ridiculous lie that i was more insulted by his apparent belief in my stupidity than anything else). I'll continue to play the game, but i'll be buying 2h or printing. I won't be buying codices (which i used to for lore and art). I'll not be attending official events. I'm done with the bs.

The lie was that a certain activity was legally forbidden from taking place in-store, on instruction from head office, and that this was the case due to a specific policy enacted by the current (Conservative) government. I won't go further into specifics, though, as I know the manager in question does watch NE videos looking for criticism of the company, and I have previously indicated the area of the country I'm in. I know this is a lie because: (1) Other stores have different policies - I've spoken to other managers on the same issue previously. Some allow this activity. Some do not. (2) Other stores outside of the UK (EU & USA) enact the same policy / do not enact the same policy on a store-by-store basis, and have done so for years. This specific issue has been discussed at length in various forums. It is therefore clearly not anything to do with what the UK government says (3) I'm familiar with the effects on business of the policy in question based on my own work life. This activity is in no way affected. (4) I clarified the matter with GW Head Office - I called them and asked directly whether this was the case. They clarified that there was no such head office instruction and that this matter was decided on a store-by-store basis at manager discretion. (5) Supporting evidence: the manager has expressed opposition to the government as a whole, and this policy in particular, on a number of previous occasions. The thing is that there _are_ valid reasons for this store policy. I would have accepted any of them. If he had said "it's because (insert credible valid reasons)" I would have shrugged and accepted it. Because he went with "head office insist because the bastard Tories did XYZ, and it's all their fault, so you know which way to vote in the next election now" - that I take such offence about it

They had previously vetoed the concept of female Custodes when a few of the authors tried to introduce them, so I'm firmly believing this was done as an opportunistic cash-grab _as well as_ a performative virtue-signal. GW have long been of the "Left" and on board with those ideals, and happy to put on displays about what a wonderfully progressive company they are. Crossref the famous "You will not be missed" BLM post. I just don't get it. Imagine having the perfect female counterparts to the male Custodes and Space Marines, in the forms of the Sisters of Silence and the Sisters of Battle respectively. Two factions that yes, are physically weaker. They aren't genetically modified over-buff super soldiers, but in fact stand shoulder to shoulder with these two forces because of different, unique features. Much like in the real world, women are by and large physically weaker than men but stand as equal partners in the human race thanks to the wonderful qualities they have that makes them different from men. On the hobby front- I agree with everything you said. I don't engage with GW aside from the odd pot of paint, buy most stuff second hand or 3D print it. I'm quite content with that. They're free to make politically motivated changes. Its their share price that has already started to suffer.

I really loved the scenes from master of mankind where custodians and sisters were partnered up, it was such a cool image of the "ultimate" men and "ultimate women" united fighting daemons from hell. No idea why they didn't lean into that more, so much potential squandered.

As a newish player. I thought sisters of battle were basically female marines (elite soldiers, power armor, use bolters, etc). I also thought the sisters of silence were basically female custodes (one of the hands of the emperor, super elite and rare, highly trained, gold armor, etc). If having male sisters of battle or male sisters of silence sounds wrong, then female custodes/marines should also sound wrong. If they really want more female models/characters, just expand those two entirely female only badass factions. If there was a good lore reason, sure whatever. Or like stormcast eternals, they always had female warriors since inception, cool no problem! But this just feels FORCED, and it also does not feel like 40k. It feels like REAL WORLD MODERN EQUALITY being force-fed into a fantasy setting that is the complete opposite of this.

Because the necron lore was killing the faction, and that was 3rd edition. Before a lot of lore was set in stone. Also, fundamentally, the troops stayed the same, some characters gained personality, breathing life into the range.

The problem is never 'the current problem'; it's the political push into every aspect of our lives to 'exterminate' any reprieve, however small, from the desired political and cultural revolution. This isn't about 40k. This isn't about representation. This isn't even about profit. It's about overarching control of every divergence from your lived experience to formulate a singular message and culture. That is the only reason you can perceive this for every major franchise.
They're openly changing/retconning the world and the lore without showing any respect to what came before. This is a VERY bad sign. We've seen other successful IPs go down this same road (Star Wars, Marvel Comics, LotR, pretty much anything Wizards of the Coast has been putting out lately) and it nearly always ends in disaster

Yes it's a strange reflex. I've caught myself doing it too even though I have a very low/accurate opinion of women. I think we may be genetically programmed for it. I heard this the other day: infant sons cry more than infant daughters, but infant daughters are attended to much quicker when they cry. So from infancy men are faced with the reality that we are expendable and women are precious. Biologically, it's probably the right way to do things, but I think this might have something to do with why men flex against other men like this.
I am still baffled that Warhammer with its 30+ Years of company confirmed lore that there are no ladies in the Adeptus Custodes and the Adeptus Astartes, just as there are no men of any skintone, collour of sect of the Imperial religion in the Sisters of Battle or Sisters of Silence, but who gave us absolutely stunning and awesome ladies like Lotarra Sarrin, Jenetia Krole, Lelith Hesperax, Jain Zar, the list goes on, have been willing to abandon the fundemental thing that makes the 40k universe what it is i.e the decades old vast volumes of *lore*, white dwarf editions and so on in such a stupid manner, a Ork Kommando would have had more tact. They've gone against their own confirmed ethos and have as a company debunked the no gentlemen in these two factions, no ladies in these two factions in such a blunt manner it puts the integrity of the company to its own product i.e the Warhammer universe into question. And I think thats just unacceptable.

But we don't know what the reason is. Everything, outside of what is known in GW corporate HQ, is pure speculation. Was this political? Maybe. Was it just marketing to see if they could get girls, who typically play Orks and Tyranids, interested in some of the Imperial Factions? I'm leaning more on this knowing how much GW loves making money. But we'll see. It'll be interesting to see where GW goes from here.
At a meta real-world level it's a very stupid way to introduce more female characters (we already have the Sisters of Silence - make them more interesting!!) but in lore it doesn't make sense to me either, for the simple reason that Custodes are hand-crafted to be the perfect soldiers, using both the height of technology and mystical magical bullshit to raise humans as high as they can possibly go. That doesn't itself inherently mean female Custodes are stupid or impossible (though it does raise questions as to how compatible females would really be with the Emperor's own genetic material, which is used to uplift them). The real problem is why the fuck the Emperor would ever make a female Custodian. It is just an unfortunate truth of human biology that females are much weaker than males. This is an inescapable fact. The absolute strongest women, in most cases, can be outmatched by a man that is merely somewhat above average. Women also have ovarian cycles, which can range from mild discomfort (for the lucky few) to crippling, incapacitating pain. These are not good qualities to have in what are supposed to be the most elite soldiers imaginable. You could say that sci-fi genetic engineering and magic can overcome these - disable a woman's periods and give them a male-like body that is just as strong - but then you would ask.... why? What is the point? What possible purpose could this ever serve? Why would you ever spend the extra effort making a female soldier equal to a male when you could just begin with a male? The fatal flaw of female Custodes is not that it's impossible, it's that it makes no sense because the Emperor has to *actively choose* to make a female Custodian, and he would never do this. The Emperor is not the type to include women in his elite guard for the sake of diversity. There's no point to doing it, and it could potentially even cause problems with group cohesion as single-sex group dynamics are always different to mixed-sex groups (this is why mixed-sex military units are extremely rare). As far as I am aware there's not even a particular lore reason why the Sisters of Silence are all female, they just simply are, and it's very inconsistent that they are willing to have groups that are female-only just for the sake of being female-only but will only very begrudgingly give male-only groups a rational, logical explanation for why they are male-only. If they want to apply a consistent standard of having a reason why certain groups can only be a single sex, a very easy retcon which I doubt anyone would complain about is just saying that women are much more likely to be blanks than men.

I think this custodes change was for political points.I dont think anyone was staying away from the hobby because the lack of felmale custodes.I am not planning on leaving the hobby ,but this will change how i spend money in within the hobby. I will look into non gw paints and used/ second hand models and possibly getting a 3D printer.

I find it ironic how a company like GW can create a universe like WH40K that has no place for heretics, blasphemy, but instead has order, rituals, and culture. Then GW says "fuck it" and adds something out of left field and completely destroy decades of lore. If they really wanted female custodes, why not build them up? They could have taken one female from the Imperial Guard and had her work her way up. Make her bleed with hard work and hardships and mental strain; prove to herself that she is tough and hard and at the end let her reach maybe Space Marine status only after she sacrifices herself for honor, duty, and family. Her bloodline, her daughter, inspired by her mother, could have continued her mother's journey. Reaching further than her mother; honoring her mother by becoming the first female Ultra Marine or whatever. Then her inspiring other female soldiers to move up therefore reaching custodes status. This story would take years to develop and tell, maybe a decade, but GW took a shortcut and a massive L. Dumbasses. There, I wrote a basic template GW. Pay me. @NorthernExile It does matter. Custodes are created in their infancy; unlike Astartes who come from older individuals. There isn't really a way to 'build up' to a female custodes existing, they just kind of have to go "Okay, we created a female custodes because this one infant had really good genes and just happened to be female". If they just said 'since the horus heresy, they pulled from all ranks of terra based on genetic purity' then I think it'd be fine rather than retroactively going "Nah, since the start they've always been a thing.".
My head canon is that infant daughters of the noble houses of Terra who are genetically determined to not bear children are thrown into the arcane genetic shredder vats to become custodes.

Friend, Space Marines and Custodians aren't all male because the armies don't want women in them, but it's because they literally cant't become part of them. The changes they go through are on the genetic, DNA molecule to DNA molecule level and their chromosomes are imperative to their creation. For Marines the genetics of their Primarchs are so strong that they literally start looking like small versions of them. There are no female Custodes or Space Marines because there can't be, there shouldn't be.

One of the big problems I have with this mentality mentioned about "Live and let live", is that I was already doing that. It didn't work. I was already trying to just do my own thing, enjoy my own hobbies. Then those people who I would love to just have different games come into my space repeatedly and try to step on it and tell me what I can and can't enjoy. They don't want to allow me to have anything. It must be the way THEY want it, with no exception, everywhere. So... yeah I fight and tell them to all sod off.

I feel better after switching off and I don't care if there are women written into the lore. It's a DEI Amazon push. I don't need more, it's perfect to me. When Amazon did their thing with The Fan project I gave it a chance then went “nah lol”. I guess that's the point. I vote with my wallet. That's how we lost basically every hobby like this to the mentally insane who ruin all they touch, and now we are loosing warhammer as well. If we don't speak up we are going to loose it all. You're right, female Custodes don't matter. Pandering to a vocal minority by changing years of lore before smugly declaring they were always a thing then firefighting your tweet reponses DOES matter. You're now getting to that stage where most people just shut up and take it for fear of being branded an ist or phobe for making common sense points. The hobby shouldn't change for these people - if someone doesn't like 40k, then so what? Ostracising your core community always works well though, right?
Its not female custodes that are the issue, it's the principle behind it that people are worried about; the fact that GW just goes it out of left field and completely retcons an established bit of warhammer 40k lore for the sake of perceived "wokeism". If they are willing to do this to custodes what other factions will they be willing to do this to? space marines?, orks?, sisters of battle?, the point is companies like GW are always looking for more leeway. Give them an inch and they will take 100 miles if we simply let them do as they please with the custodes they 100% will try the same thing with the other factions. it's a matter of principle
As an adult, I’m aware that there is this “culture war” going on - that’s fine, live and let live etc, not really paying attention to it. I think why this upsets me is it feels like this culture war is being rammed down my throat as opposed to a genuine lore change. Kind of like when you just want to watch sport and forget about politics, but the event becomes some “platform to bring about change” etc.
I used to be the same and ignore the cultrue war stuff and thought the star wars fans needed to maybe chill out but also kinda accepted that im not on that level of fan im pretty casual when it comes to starwars. But now that its been happening more and more in my hobby im starting to understand what the star wars guys were going thru.
I think that’s the thing… when it’s happening everywhere all the time, when it pops up in something you follow it’s a case of “here we go again” which just prepositions one to view it negatively. To echo some other comments, if it was built up a bit with some effort, probably wouldn’t have noticed. If things like this are just slapped in, it reeks of “had to be inclusive” which at the moment is heavily politicized, which in turn kind of puts me off it immediately , because the culture war focus at this point is just annoying. But if you can see some thought put into it and there is some buildup with a story behind the change I think “ ah cool, ok new story, makes sense”. Consider fallout - I imagine (might be wrong here) that that’s predominantly a male audience for the video games. But the story is such that when Amazon makes the protagonist a lady I don’t immediately think “more EDI, change the world platform etc”. I just accept it and enjoy because it makes immediate sense in that universe, you don’t really have to build up a story. In 40K though, you have this multi decade buildup of story lines and history…. So any jarring change of this nature has that off putting feel to it

The problem isn't the "what" of the change, but the "how" and the "why". I don't think the introduction of female Custodes would really have upset so much of the true fanbase as much as it has, if it had been managed with a little bit more reason and justification. What has bothered people so much is the haphazard, and callous way that's been done, with comments ignored and criticism stifled. For GW to be blocking people on Twitter for dissent is also a despicable low, and the company has really shown its colours - and they are colours of great contempt. Shame on Games Workshop for that.
I've been looking for good reason to start writing my own rules to use 40k models with, and I got that reason yesterday. I cancelled my WH+ subscription since I won't be needing the app anymore.
This is a huge insult to the work of earlier GW writers who developed the foundation that the game is built upon. I find it hard to see the female Custodes as anything more than a shallow attempt at appeasing people who don’t want a hobby, they just don’t want you to have one either. Almost every faction bar the space marines includes women; Imperial Guard, AdMec, Knights, Inquisition, Tua, Votann, Genestealers, Eldar and Dark Eldar, already have female lore characters and models, and Necrons, Orks and Tyranids are all genderless. If this was about representation, why not expand any of these factions?
Having female custodes isnt the issue. It's about why they're doing it. Are they doing this because they think female custodes will be a meaningful change? Or are they doing it for idealogical reasons? Good franchises can suffer when politically motivated individuals feel the need shove their ideaolgy into it.
I downloaded the OPR Grimdark world book yesterday. Going to give them a chance instead. As far as things I'm worried about, I'm far more worried about the jackasses on my block who decided it's a good idea to put speed bumps on my street. Also, I NEVER see these community posts.
Never have I agreed more with you. For me it's less about the blatant, clear retconning of the lore, it's the gaslighting. GW is a "politically challenged" company, when they came out and said "there have always been female custodes" it was just laughable and absolutely trollable. To throw their words back at them, yes, I in fact won't be missed, I am not missed, but do you know who does appreciate me? Chinese recasters, a lovely business in Ukraine and guys who model and print 3d miniatures and that's how I want to keep it. You absolutely hit the nail on the head when you said the hobby is what you make of it. I pick and choose the lore I subscribe to, that fits into the established universe I love. I like the daemonculaba stories, I like the Iron Warriors battering their way into the fortress on Hydra Cordatus, I love the first few HH books and a decent amount from the series, the Death Korps of Krieg sieging Vraks, the Badab war etc. all of these things exist to me, including male only marines and custodes and that's how I'll keep it because it is in keeping with the dark parody of 40K, which is objectively 40K at its best. As a final note, all the feminization of Custodes does is make perverted people create more p*rnographic material, nothing else
Hey man, I really respect your last video on 40k and your love for the hobby. So here is the thing, this is a first big step for the company to show the world we are shedding out “nerd basement dwelling” image and this isn”t a attack on nerds those are my people. They will never stop, they can’t now, they have to keep pushing the envelope to keep the interest on 40k And people that will be bored with it in 2 weeks and never buy a box. The people that write the lore, will double down, again and again because they believe they are fixing the lore. Thing is, the exact same arguments were made about (at least, these are just the ones that spring quickest to mind) Primaris Marines (7 years ago), killing off the Fantasy Setting to replace it with AoS (10 years ago) and the Warhammer Adventures children's books (5 years ago). "GW is sanitising the fluff to appeal to modern politics". "This is the first step in GW trying to go mainstream and don't care about the fans that got them to where they are". I've heard these same arguments for literal years, yet none of those have 'destroyed' the IP/company. Hell, this isn't even the first time the 'GW's gone 'woke' and will destroy itself' thing has come up and been used to generate outrage. We did this dance back in 2020 with the 'You Will Not Be Missed' statement GW put out. Now, do I like this change? Not really, just like I didn't really like several of those other changes that spectacularly failed to ruin GW. It's not a good retcon, kinda lazily implemented, could have been done significantly better and feels a bit pointless but ultimately doesn't really change much. This is also far from the first change to GW's fluff I've not be enthused about. It's a storm in a teacup that the culture warriors on both sides are trying to amplify for their own agendas. That's the bit I find most frustrating tbh.
The lore was clear. The Custodes are the sons of nobles from Terra that had the genetic purity that allowed for the transformation process to be possible in the first place. Again. Sons. Which makes sense for the same reason that the primarchs were all made to be men. Because they are soldiers. Besides, GW claiming they always existed is the most sexist thing they could have said since not a single one was important enough to be mentioned in the entire Horus Heresy series and in the Era Indomitus. It's just virtue signaling that goes against the lore, the setting and the customers.
Originally, Custodes weren't even SM's. They wore leather pants, boots a cloak, bare-chested with a fairy-Eldar helmet and a "laser spear". It's no wonder they only made one model of them originally. They were LGBT-AF. I have one somewhere.

Its a shitty retcon to appease an audience that doesnt want to enjoy something for what it is, they want it to be them. GW did this durring a release of an existing faction to both undermine and cheaply throw a bone to that group. It costs ALLOT to develop something new and its an enharant monetary risk. (Im not sticking up for them im explaining their thought process. Cheap and efficient, they are a business. Not taking risks is stupid and is whats leading to the downfall of cinema and videogames aswell) The thought process of the investors in their ear is that the current ideological war is the future and they need to get ahead of the curve without completely annihilating their current revenue as they switch demographics. This is also typical business behavior. All big companies have psychologists in them who help them understand why people buy things and how to exploit it as much as possible. This is obv just the beginning. More changes will be made and I wont be surprised when the 2 missing primarchs come back as women. Theyve shown they will ignore existing lore to do whatever they want. This would be the smartest business approach if they think that market will to for it. They tried female space marines in the past and they didnt sell. Now that minds are changing its only a matter of time before they try again. SoB and SoS were the first gages of the interest, these were good ways of approaching the matter. If they wanted to, they couldve expanded SoS. They dont want to spend the money to make the money without more proof of worth. GW giving in is their way of saying put your wallet where your mouth is. Vote with your wallet. Want more of this? Instead of expanding the lore of already existing factions such as sisters of silence, battle etc, female imperial guard, eldar and so on, or introducing a new female faction within the lore, they are going to ruin the IP to please less than 1% of players and fans. Just get into the Indie tabletop scene. Plenty of really great Sci-Fi IPs like Vindictive the Game or One Page Rules that let you use 40k models but play with creators that actually care about their fanbase.

If you can't let go of the old 40K, okay just play with old lores and old rules. I think at this point, we can all agree that cannon stopped at around the time Primaris is introduced.
The more I think about it, the worse it actually gets. If GW really wanted to expand on it's female characters and factions, they could have expanded on the Sisters of Silence lore, fleshing them out and making them their own army. Something akin to the Grey Knights but a custodes tier/style army, etc. THAT would have been great, actually. an anti-psyker / anti-warp, specialist version of custodes sort of thing. IT could have been awesome. But instead, GW chose the laziest, most pandering, most transparently bullshit way to handle things and completely shit the bed in doing so.
I don't expect many to leave the hobby at this point, but that will change if they keep pushing inclusion into thr hobby. The bigger threat is they lose the goodwill of the fans and GW get branded a woke company, turning away potential new customers who have already made up their minds what 40k is about. If kids are priced out and the brand is toxic to adults that could start a death spiral
While I agree in general with the sentiment, the idea that GW is going to magically realize one day that it has no customers is more than fanciful, it's borderline delirious. It's literally printing money and has so many profitable divisions that have surpassed being just a tabletop thing. They are making shows in the near future and that, they really want to get right (aka hiring Cavill, the Buff Nerd to push it forward). After that starts going, they've hit the bank. That's what people don't really get in these arguments. Once you get past 25, you are increasingly in the minority in all your favourite things. That might be sad to some but it's the truth. If the next batch of 12 to 25 year olds in the 2040s somehow change their tune, you'll find that what is hip today will be forgotten in an instant.
For me it is easy. People who created 40k lore doesn't work there any more. Current HQ in GW doesnt care. People in charge are not players - just businessman. All They understand is chart with annual profits. And when Amazon want female SM for They TV series - GW will happily deliver. Cause - money.

All GW did here was burn a loyal fan base they took decades to build. 99% of us don’t care about female custodes…all this did was ensure the lot of us won’t give them money anymore. My friends and I will continue to paint and play with our models, and we will feel absolutely no guilt about 3rd party and 3d printed minis.

The only reason why specifically this change causes such an outrage is, because it has a word "female" in it, which instantly triggers a specific group of people that can then easily weaponize others that aint even fans of the WH40k, because of the topic discussed. Not to mention that the outrage itself isnt that big as it seems to at the first glance to begin with... Most of us, WH40k vets dont give a damn. Nobody will care in a year about this change just like nobody did about hundreds of others that were many times even worse and more impactful than this one.

I personally am not bothered by the concept of female custodes, however i feel like the way GW has done this is to weed out the people they "don't like" its highlighting the groups, channels, personalities who are enraged by this news, they are going to use this as a way to place the people in the hobby into boxes and try to be harder on ones who are loudly opposing this which imo is rediculous. This change will not happen overnight though as i found out when a business I used to work for did this in 2018. It made a similar decision on its products and it was done to appeal to the DEI department, they wanted to weed out online communities that opposed to progressive views, so they made a change that would be concidered "woke", then targeted the loudest communities and personalities with withdrawal of sponserships and such. They hit them in the financial departments becuse they belived this would force complience to DEI mantra. And unfortunatly it did work in many ways.

It is true. 42 players have joined me in playing our own version of 40K. I wrote the game to be fast and fun. Also did it in 20mm. Its taking over the local area.
Strangely enough autoplay & the algorithm brought me here from Arch's coverage of this. This is the first of your videos I've seen & I really appreciate hearing your rational take on this. I'm a 46 year old husband, & father of nine that has too many real world things to deal with & don't need drama in my hobby. While I don't play 40k largely in part to GW gouging players first on models & then on constant rules updates that can just write off the faction that cost you a mortgage payment just to but. I was also disgusted by how GW treated their fans/customers that were creating content. I play & really enjoy playing BattleTech & we are having very similar issues in that community & the licensee Catalyst Gaming Labs. BT has been around for forty years & the community not the IP owner has been what has kept the game alive. It is best for us all if the IP owner is succesful as it gets us more of what we enjoy, & while I want to see the lore handled respectfully, the rules not constantly changed to seperate me from my money, my hobby will do just fine if they flounder. We don't need them, they need us.

Making a retcon isn't the issue.
Introducing female Custodes isn't the issue.
The issue is the disrespect they have shown their paying customers, and their own lore.
They have stated "there has always been female Custodes". That is demonstrably not true.
If they had "pulled a Primaris" and introduced female Custodes as "look what Cawl just pulled out of his ass", then this would not be as much of a problem. Sure, people would complain, but not as many.
They don't seem to realise that the lore is the *only* thing that keeps people shackled to the Warhammer troll. If they damage the lore, they weaken the hold that they have on their customers. And fewer people will give in to FOMO, must-haves, and ever-increasing prices. Sure, there will still be lots - but there will be less than there were.
I'm also tired of this condescending attitude from the company at all levels. I'd had enough of my local GW store a couple weeks ago when the manager (with whom i thought i had a reasonable relationship) blatantly lied to my face about a company policy (and it was such a ridiculous lie that i was more insulted by his apparent belief in my stupidity than anything else). I'll continue to play the game, but i'll be buying 2h or printing. I won't be buying codices (which i used to for lore and art). I'll not be attending official events. I'm done with the bs.

If they had taken the same actions for a reason other than self-righteous belief in their own superiority, it would still get me just as much. If they had introduced female custodes for the same reasons, but not as a gaslighting retcon, it would have bothered me less. If they had "pulled a Primaris" instead and introduced them as something new, I would have rolled my eyes, considered it stupid, and just moved on to the next thing. Because they're doubling down and insisting it is not a retcon, that we have always been at war with Eurasia, and that anyone who disagrees with them is clearly just a stupid bigot - then... No. I won't just roll my eyes and move on.
The lie was that a certain activity was legally forbidden from taking place in-store, on instruction from head office, and that this was the case due to a specific policy enacted by the current (Conservative) government.
I won't go further into specifics, though, as I know the manager in question does watch NE videos looking for criticism of the company, and I have previously indicated the area of the country I'm in.
I know this is a lie because:
(1) Other stores have different policies - I've spoken to other managers on the same issue previously. Some allow this activity. Some do not.
(2) Other stores outside of the UK (EU & USA) enact the same policy / do not enact the same policy on a store-by-store basis, and have done so for years. This specific issue has been discussed at length in various forums. It is therefore clearly not anything to do with what the UK government says
(3) I'm familiar with the effects on business of the policy in question based on my own work life. This activity is in no way affected.
(4) I clarified the matter with GW Head Office - I called them and asked directly whether this was the case. They clarified that there was no such head office instruction and that this matter was decided on a store-by-store basis at manager discretion.
(5) Supporting evidence: the manager has expressed opposition to the government as a whole, and this policy in particular, on a number of previous occasions.
The thing is that there _are_ valid reasons for this store policy. I would have accepted any of them. If he had said "it's because (insert credible valid reasons)" I would have shrugged and accepted it. Because he went with "head office insist because the bastard Tories did XYZ, and it's all their fault, so you know which way to vote in the next election now" - that I take such offence about it
@@garethjohn4299 It's very likely this decision was taken during the heights of the Woke Train going choo-choo, and GW jumped on board trying to cash in the way other companies seemed to be. They had previously vetoed the concept of female Custodes when a few of the authors tried to introduce them, so I'm firmly believing this was done as an opportunistic cash-grab _as well as_ a performative virtue-signal.

Imagine having the perfect female counterparts to the male Custodes and Space Marines, in the forms of the Sisters of Silence and the Sisters of Battle respectively. Two factions that yes, are physically weaker. They aren't genetically modified over-buff super soldiers, but in fact stand shoulder to shoulder with these two forces because of different, unique features. Much like in the real world, women are by and large physically weaker than men but stand as equal partners in the human race thanks to the wonderful qualities they have that makes them different from men.
On the hobby front- I agree with everything you said. I don't engage with GW aside from the odd pot of paint, buy most stuff second hand or 3D print it. I'm quite content with that. They're free to make politically motivated changes. Its their share price that has already started to suffer.

As a newish player. I thought sisters of battle were basically female marines (elite soldiers, power armor, use bolters, etc). I also thought the sisters of silence were basically female custodes (one of the hands of the emperor, super elite and rare, highly trained, gold armor, etc). If having male sisters of battle or male sisters of silence sounds wrong, then female custodes/marines should also sound wrong. If they really want more female models/characters, just expand those two entirely female only badass factions.
If there was a good lore reason, sure whatever. Or like stormcast eternals, they always had female warriors since inception, cool no problem!
But this just feels FORCED, and it also does not feel like 40k. It feels like REAL WORLD MODERN EQUALITY being force-fed into a fantasy setting that is the complete opposite of this.

Because the necron lore was killing the faction, and that was 3rd edition. Before a lot of lore was set in stone. Also, fundamentally, the troops stayed the same, some characters gained personality, breathing life into the range.

I am still baffled that Warhammer with its 30+ Years of company confirmed lore that there are no ladies in the Adeptus Custodes and the Adeptus Astartes, just as there are no men of any skintone, collour of sect of the Imperial religion in the Sisters of Battle or Sisters of Silence, but who gave us absolutely stunning and awesome ladies like Lotarra Sarrin, Jenetia Krole, Lelith Hesperax, Jain Zar, the list goes on, have been willing to abandon the fundemental thing that makes the 40k universe what it is i.e the decades old vast volumes of *lore*, white dwarf editions and so on in such a stupid manner, a Ork Kommando would have had more tact. They've gone against their own confirmed ethos and have as a company debunked the no gentlemen in these two factions, no ladies in these two factions in such a blunt manner it puts the integrity of the company to its own product i.e the Warhammer universe into question.
And I think thats just unacceptable.

But we don't know what the reason is. Everything, outside of what is known in GW corporate HQ, is pure speculation. Was this political? Maybe. Was it just marketing to see if they could get girls, who typically play Orks and Tyranids, interested in some of the Imperial Factions? I'm leaning more on this knowing how much GW loves making money. But we'll see. It'll be interesting to see where GW goes from here.

At a meta real-world level it's a very stupid way to introduce more female characters (we already have the Sisters of Silence - make them more interesting!!) but in lore it doesn't make sense to me either, for the simple reason that Custodes are hand-crafted to be the perfect soldiers, using both the height of technology and mystical magical bullshit to raise humans as high as they can possibly go.
That doesn't itself inherently mean female Custodes are stupid or impossible (though it does raise questions as to how compatible females would really be with the Emperor's own genetic material, which is used to uplift them). The real problem is why the fuck the Emperor would ever make a female Custodian.
It is just an unfortunate truth of human biology that females are much weaker than males. This is an inescapable fact. The absolute strongest women, in most cases, can be outmatched by a man that is merely somewhat above average. Women also have ovarian cycles, which can range from mild discomfort (for the lucky few) to crippling, incapacitating pain. These are not good qualities to have in what are supposed to be the most elite soldiers imaginable.
You could say that sci-fi genetic engineering and magic can overcome these - disable a woman's periods and give them a male-like body that is just as strong - but then you would ask.... why? What is the point? What possible purpose could this ever serve? Why would you ever spend the extra effort making a female soldier equal to a male when you could just begin with a male?
The fatal flaw of female Custodes is not that it's impossible, it's that it makes no sense because the Emperor has to *actively choose* to make a female Custodian, and he would never do this. The Emperor is not the type to include women in his elite guard for the sake of diversity. There's no point to doing it, and it could potentially even cause problems with group cohesion as single-sex group dynamics are always different to mixed-sex groups (this is why mixed-sex military units are extremely rare).
As far as I am aware there's not even a particular lore reason why the Sisters of Silence are all female, they just simply are, and it's very inconsistent that they are willing to have groups that are female-only just for the sake of being female-only but will only very begrudgingly give male-only groups a rational, logical explanation for why they are male-only. If they want to apply a consistent standard of having a reason why certain groups can only be a single sex, a very easy retcon which I doubt anyone would complain about is just saying that women are much more likely to be blanks than men.

I find it ironic how a company like GW can create a universe like WH40K that has no place for heretics, blasphemy, but instead has order, rituals, and culture. Then GW says "fuck it" and adds something out of left field and completely destroy decades of lore.
If they really wanted female custodes, why not build them up? They could have taken one female from the Imperial Guard and had her work her way up. Make her bleed with hard work and hardships and mental strain; prove to herself that she is tough and hard and at the end let her reach maybe Space Marine status only after she sacrifices herself for honor, duty, and family. Her bloodline, her daughter, inspired by her mother, could have continued her mother's journey. Reaching further than her mother; honoring her mother by becoming the first female Ultra Marine or whatever. Then her inspiring other female soldiers to move up therefore reaching custodes status. This story would take years to develop and tell, maybe a decade, but GW took a shortcut and a massive L. Dumbasses. There, I wrote a basic template GW. Pay me.

Custodes are created in their infancy; unlike Astartes who come from older individuals. There isn't really a way to 'build up' to a female custodes existing, they just kind of have to go "Okay, we created a female custodes because this one infant had really good genes and just happened to be female". If they just said 'since the horus heresy, they pulled from all ranks of terra based on genetic purity' then I think it'd be fine rather than retroactively going "Nah, since the start they've always been a thing.".
My head canon is that infant daughters of the noble houses of Terra who are genetically determined to not bear children are thrown into the arcane genetic shredder vats to become custodes.

Friend, Space Marines and Custodians aren't all male because the armies don't want women in them, but it's because they literally cant't become part of them. The changes they go through are on the genetic, DNA molecule to DNA molecule level and their chromosomes are imperative to their creation. For Marines the genetics of their Primarchs are so strong that they literally start looking like small versions of them. There are no female Custodes or Space Marines because there can't be, there shouldn't be.

You forget that years ago this is exactly what we did, we tried to isolate ourselves, we tried to get them to just leave us alone, we tried to lay on our backs and give them corners of our hobbies so they can be satisfied. One of the big problems I have with this mentality mentioned about "Live and let live", is that I was already doing that. It didn't work. I was already trying to just do my own thing, enjoy my own hobbies. Then those people who I would love to just have different games come into my space repeatedly and try to step on it and tell me what I can and can't enjoy.

That 40 minutes flew by. I was in a peaceful place. So this is me and my hobby time. I am colouring a beautiful book learning new paint, pen, watercolour, and pencil techniques. I am listening to Soul Hunters. That's me enjoying my hobby time. GW got my money though audible. I didn't know about the Night Haunters.. I feel better after switching off and I don't care if there are women written into the lore. It's a DEI Amazon push.

You're right, female Custodes don't matter. Pandering to a vocal minority by changing years of lore before smugly declaring they were always a thing then firefighting your tweet reponses DOES matter. You're now getting to that stage where most people just shut up and take it for fear of being branded an ist or phobe for making common sense points. The hobby shouldn't change for these people - if someone doesn't like 40k, then so what? Ostracising your core community always works well though, right?
Its not female custodes that are the issue, it's the principle behind it that people are worried about; the fact that GW just goes it out of left field and completely retcons an established bit of warhammer 40k lore for the sake of perceived "wokeism". If they are willing to do this to custodes what other factions will they be willing to do this to? space marines?, orks?, sisters of battle?, the point is companies like GW are always looking for more leeway. Give them an inch and they will take 100 miles if we simply let them do as they please with the custodes they 100% will try the same thing with the other factions. it's a matter of principle

As an adult, I’m aware that there is this “culture war” going on - that’s fine, live and let live etc, not really paying attention to it.
I think why this upsets me is it feels like this culture war is being rammed down my throat as opposed to a genuine lore change. Kind of like when you just want to watch sport and forget about politics, but the event becomes some “platform
to bring about change” etc.
I used to be the same and ignore the cultrue war stuff and thought the star wars fans needed to maybe chill out but also kinda accepted that im not on that level of fan im pretty casual when it comes to starwars. But now that its been happening more and more in my hobby im starting to understand what the star wars guys were going thru.
I think that’s the thing… when it’s happening everywhere all the time, when it pops up in something you follow it’s a case of “here we go again” which just prepositions one to view it negatively.
To echo some other comments, if it was built up a bit with some effort, probably wouldn’t have noticed.
If things like this are just slapped in, it reeks of “had to be inclusive” which at the moment is heavily politicized, which in turn kind of puts me off it immediately , because the culture war focus at this point is just annoying.
But if you can see some thought put into it and there is some buildup with a story behind the change I think “ ah cool, ok new story, makes sense”.
Consider fallout - I imagine (might be wrong here) that that’s predominantly a male audience for the video games. But the story is such that when Amazon makes the protagonist a lady I don’t immediately think “more EDI, change the world platform etc”. I just accept it and enjoy because it makes immediate sense in that universe, you don’t really have to build up a story. In 40K though, you have this multi decade buildup of story lines and history…. So any jarring change of this nature has that off putting feel to it

The problem isn't the "what" of the change, but the "how" and the "why". I don't think the introduction of female Custodes would really have upset so much of the true fanbase as much as it has, if it had been managed with a little bit more reason and justification. What has bothered people so much is the haphazard, and callous way that's been done, with comments ignored and criticism stifled. For GW to be blocking people on Twitter for dissent is also a despicable low, and the company has really shown its colours - and they are colours of great contempt. Shame on Games Workshop for that.
I've been looking for good reason to start writing my own rules to use 40k models with, and I got that reason yesterday. I cancelled my WH+ subscription since I won't be needing the app anymore.

This is a huge insult to the work of earlier GW writers who developed the foundation that the game is built upon. I find it hard to see the female Custodes as anything more than a shallow attempt at appeasing people who don’t want a hobby, they just don’t want you to have one either. Almost every faction bar the space marines includes women; Imperial Guard, AdMec, Knights, Inquisition, Tua, Votann, Genestealers, Eldar and Dark Eldar, already have female lore characters and models, and Necrons, Orks and Tyranids are all genderless. If this was about representation, why not expand any of these factions?

For me it's less about the blatant, clear retconning of the lore, it's the gaslighting. GW is a "politically challenged" company, when they came out and said "there have always been female custodes" it was just laughable and absolutely trollable.
To throw their words back at them, yes, I in fact won't be missed, I am not missed, but do you know who does appreciate me? Chinese recasters, a lovely business in Ukraine and guys who model and print 3d miniatures and that's how I want to keep it.
You absolutely hit the nail on the head when you said the hobby is what you make of it. I pick and choose the lore I subscribe to, that fits into the established universe I love. I like the daemonculaba stories, I like the Iron Warriors battering their way into the fortress on Hydra Cordatus, I love the first few HH books and a decent amount from the series, the Death Korps of Krieg sieging Vraks, the Badab war etc. all of these things exist to me, including male only marines and custodes and that's how I'll keep it because it is in keeping with the dark parody of 40K, which is objectively 40K at its best.
As a final note, all the feminization of Custodes does is make perverted people create more p*rnographic material, nothing else

Thing is, the exact same arguments were made about (at least, these are just the ones that spring quickest to mind) Primaris Marines (7 years ago), killing off the Fantasy Setting to replace it with AoS (10 years ago) and the Warhammer Adventures children's books (5 years ago). "GW is sanitising the fluff to appeal to modern politics". "This is the first step in GW trying to go mainstream and don't care about the fans that got them to where they are". I've heard these same arguments for literal years, yet none of those have 'destroyed' the IP/company. Hell, this isn't even the first time the 'GW's gone 'woke' and will destroy itself' thing has come up and been used to generate outrage. We did this dance back in 2020 with the 'You Will Not Be Missed' statement GW put out.
Now, do I like this change? Not really, just like I didn't really like several of those other changes that spectacularly failed to ruin GW. It's not a good retcon, kinda lazily implemented, could have been done significantly better and feels a bit pointless but ultimately doesn't really change much. This is also far from the first change to GW's fluff I've not be enthused about. It's a storm in a teacup that the culture warriors on both sides are trying to amplify for their own agendas. That's the bit I find most frustrating tbh.
I'm nee enough that i don't know the lore well enough for this to bother me but it does worry me as once wokeness is in the door it'll take over.
The lore was clear. The Custodes are the sons of nobles from Terra that had the genetic purity that allowed for the transformation process to be possible in the first place. Again. Sons. Which makes sense for the same reason that the primarchs were all made to be men. Because they are soldiers. Besides, GW claiming they always existed is the most sexist thing they could have said since not a single one was important enough to be mentioned in the entire Horus Heresy series and in the Era Indomitus. It's just virtue signaling that goes against the lore, the setting and the customers.
Originally, Custodes weren't even SM's. They wore leather pants, boots a cloak, bare-chested with a fairy-Eldar helmet and a "laser spear". It's no wonder they only made one model of them originally. They were LGBT-AF. I have one somewhere.

Its a shitty retcon to appease an audience that doesnt want to enjoy something for what it is, they want it to be them. GW did this durring a release of an existing faction to both undermine and cheaply throw a bone to that group. It costs ALLOT to develop something new and its an enharant monetary risk. Not taking risks is stupid and is whats leading to the downfall of cinema and videogames aswell)
The thought process of the investors in their ear is that the current ideological war is the future and they need to get ahead of the curve without completely annihilating their current revenue as they switch demographics. This is also typical business behavior. All big companies have psychologists in them who help them understand why people buy things and how to exploit it as much as possible. This is obv just the beginning. More changes will be made and I wont be surprised when the 2 missing primarchs come back as women. Theyve shown they will ignore existing lore to do whatever they want. This would be the smartest business approach if they think that market will to for it. They tried female space marines in the past and they didnt sell. Now that minds are changing its only a matter of time before they try again. SoB and SoS were the first gages of the interest, these were good ways of approaching the matter. If they wanted to, they couldve expanded SoS. They dont want to spend the money to make the money without more proof of worth. GW giving in is their way of saying put your wallet where your mouth is. Vote with your wallet. Want more of this? Buy it all up. Dont? Stop buying. Thats how you make change with these companies.

Just get into the Indie tabletop scene. Plenty of really great Sci-Fi IPs like Vindictive the Game or One Page Rules that let you use 40k models but play with creators that actually care about their fanbase.

It's freaking over. Guys, this is just how corporates going to be from here on out. ANY! I means...ANY! company that is funded by ESG investors are going to be woke...and unfortunately, when people fed Games Workshop to the point where they are a multi billion dollars company...it's over.
It's not because they make so much money. It's because they gotten so big and so rich...so a normal living wage CEO salary isn't going to cut it no more for the board members. All we can hope for now is individual talents among the common crowd to step up and just make a parody game version of 40K and we all jump to it. If GW really wanted to expand on it's female characters and factions, they could have expanded on the Sisters of Silence lore, fleshing them out and making them their own army. Something akin to the Grey Knights but a custodes tier/style army, etc.
THAT would have been great, actually. an anti-psyker / anti-warp, specialist version of custodes sort of thing. IT could have been awesome.
But instead, GW chose the laziest, most pandering, most transparently bullshit way to handle things and completely shit the bed in doing so.

I don't expect many to leave the hobby at this point, but that will change if they keep pushing inclusion into thr hobby. The bigger threat is they lose the goodwill of the fans and GW get branded a woke company, turning away potential new customers who have already made up their minds what 40k is about. If kids are priced out and the brand is toxic to adults that could start a death spiral
While I agree in general with the sentiment, the idea that GW is going to magically realize one day that it has no customers is more than fanciful, it's borderline delirious. It's literally printing money and has so many profitable divisions that have surpassed being just a tabletop thing. They are making shows in the near future and that, they really want to get right (aka hiring Cavill, the Buff Nerd to push it forward). After that starts going, they've hit the bank. That's what people don't really get in these arguments. Once you get past 25, you are increasingly in the minority in all your favourite things. That might be sad to some but it's the truth. If the next batch of 12 to 25 year olds in the 2040s somehow change their tune, you'll find that what is hip today will be forgotten in an instant.
For me it is easy. People who created 40k lore doesn't work there any more. Current HQ in GW doesnt care. People in charge are not players - just businessman. All They understand is chart with annual profits. And when Amazon want female SM for They TV series - GW will happily deliver. Cause - money.

The only reason why specifically this change causes such an outrage is, because it has a word "female" in it, which instantly triggers a specific group of people that can then easily weaponize others that aint even fans of the WH40k, because of the topic discussed.
Not to mention that the outrage itself isnt that big as it seems to at the first glance to begin with...

The only reason that this one feels bigger is, because it has a word "woman" in it which already creates a specific emotions in a specific group of people.
Like I said, the only bad thing I really see is the way they introduced it.

If you think this is actually about the gender of Custodes, have completely missed the point
I personally am not bothered by the concept of female custodes, however i feel like the way GW has done this is to weed out the people they "don't like" its highlighting the groups, channels, personalities who are enraged by this news, they are going to use this as a way to place the people in the hobby into boxes and try to be harder on ones who are loudly opposing this which imo is rediculous. This change will not happen overnight though as i found out when a business I used to work for did this in 2018. It made a similar decision on its products and it was done to appeal to the DEI department, they wanted to weed out online communities that opposed to progressive views, so they made a change that would be concidered "woke", then targeted the loudest communities and personalities with withdrawal of sponserships and such. They hit them in the financial departments becuse they belived this would force complience to DEI mantra. And unfortunatly it did work in many ways.
Forced compliance, and these people think they have the moral high ground and will be remembered as being on "the right side of history." Tyrants are what they are.
This is probably a clue as to what's going to happen with Amazon and the Warhammer tv show... bad omens.
It is true. 42 players have joined me in playing our own version of 40K. I wrote the game to be fast and fun. Also did it in 20mm. Its taking over the local area.

This is the first of your videos I've seen & I really appreciate hearing your rational take on this. I'm a 46 year old husband, & father of nine that has too many real world things to deal with & don't need drama in my hobby. While I don't play 40k largely in part to GW gouging players first on models & then on constant rules updates that can just write off the faction that cost you a mortgage payment just to but. I was also disgusted by how GW treated their fans/customers that were creating content. I play & really enjoy playing BattleTech & we are having very similar issues in that community & the licensee Catalyst Gaming Labs. BT has been around for forty years & the community not the IP owner has been what has kept the game alive. It is best for us all if the IP owner is succesful as it gets us more of what we enjoy, & while I want to see the lore handled respectfully, the rules not constantly changed to seperate me from my money, my hobby will do just fine if they flounder. We don't need them, they need us.
