One thing I've learned since finding out I'm autistic is that every autistic person has a rather unique set of issues, sensory or otherwise. For example, my hearing is sensitive to the point that loud sounds can send me into overload with no other sensory issues needed, but lights have never bothered me much. As such, I bring noise canceling headphones with me anywhere I expect loud noises. I could explain my whole list of sensory issues, but that would make for a very long comment
This is your best video so far - but of course they’re all superb! With regards to sensory overload, if it’s me who made the noise etc I’m absolutely fine. I’m in control. If someone else did exactly the same thing I’d be unlikely to tolerate it. Your videos are so helpful to me, as someone who’s self-diagnosed late in life. Keep up the great work!
Yes that’s like me, that’s what I’m like if someone touches me I once tried putting someone’s hand on me whilst I was controlling it and I was fine but as soon as I let go of the hand it freaked me out lol!
@@holliemabbott949 I’ve an issue with personal space and I jump out the way if someone gets too close. It’s not a decision - it’s a completely involuntary response. Before the pandemic I was growled at for doing so …. but now I’m thanked! :)
I'm really good with pepper and spices thought. Really interesting how different people with autism are. I just returned from a 14 day vacation, was a pain, the heat was a bother but I was drunk every single day in order to make the pain less severe so that helped.
My intrusive thoughts make sensory overload so much worse. I have really scary intrusive thoughts sometimes, if I'm already experiencing sensory overload, things just get 10x worse. Sometimes it's so bad I have a meltdown from things that normally I'd be fine with or even enjoy, but the scary thoughts are already hard enough to deal with.
Thank you for this video! I’ve been struggling with sensory overload for as long as I can remember! It’s terrible! Bright lights, too many things in a room/store, loud noises, touch, certain smells, vibration. If there is a fold in my pillow, I can’t sleep. A fold in my sock, I have to fix it. Can’t wear a bra or tight clothing. I had to laugh about having to wash your feet before putting socks on. That is so me! I can’t handle busy stores. I am also an agoraphobic, so shopping can be hell. The only way I can do it again is together with my service dog.
@@Lucy00111 Have you tried different materials? Or is it the tightness of the socks? I can only wear cotton socks against my skin (no synthetic materials whatsoever). The socks have to be a certain length too, go over my ankles. I can’t tolerate socks that end below my ankles or go half-way up my calves. I wear mostly sports socks. I also can’t wear pantyhose as the material drives me insane. I’ve heard of some people who never wear socks, but that isn’t always practical, esp. in northern climates.
Hi Hollie Thank you for the insight and the link,I have bought some sensory toys for my 10 year old son he has just been diagnosed.i think it will be a great help hope you had a nice Easter 😊
Great video :) you know, I do cherish my personal space therefore my loneliness and from time to time, I feel invaded when Im sorrounded by crowds of people, I know and I repeat myself all the time "I should have been kinder to 'em" but it doesn' t hit my nerves to do it, due to I reckon That's being fake and not natural, for Autistic people not to put a happy face all the time is troublesome if you don't enjoy being with people you tend to pay a high price :) but I prefer being authentic over fake, instead of stabbing people at their back.
One that really hurts is my dads violent drunk ramblings (I have deduced it cant be loudness in general because I could play my music loud and be just fine)
Often times I just get overwhelmed by all the things I need to do in a day. Or sometimes even brushing my teeth can make me panic even if I have nothing else I have to do that day. Is this an example of sensory overload or is it something else? Ive recently been diagnosed so I'm still a littke confused.
What if the holiday was not somewhere hot? Maybe that would help. I feel u about the heat man. I heard someone deacribe it as being like u were being stung by bees, apt. Yeah i dont handle being hot well. I get angrier and yell no touching if anyone tries to come close and just no patience. Im not the funnest mom in the summer lol but i try not to suck. We don't have air conditioning so the only thing to do is get to the lake for relief when it's hot.
Hello, can I ask, do you have problems with social media? I find it very overwhelming especially Facebook as I find it difficult to take in all the information (and boasting/news) all the time. I have deleted and opened a new account sometimes 3 times a day… I don’t want friends thinking I’m odd as I keep doing it and need help and support with the problem… thank you xx great video!
Are you from Yorkshire? I'm the opposite with pepper, I could eat peppercorns and not be bothered. They loved me in Thailand when I asked for extra chillis, they thought it was funny. What I hate though is most sauces, like tomato and all the common ones. I don't want to even write their names they disgust me that much.
Very good Video, My son has to wear certain clothes and does not like over dressing. I didn't know about the toys either. Keep the info vids coming. Do you know what are the different between Autism and Asperger's?
My daughter is two years old she nonverbal and she is autistic but she has a sensory processing disorder with food textures bad she hates touching how the food feels and she doesn't like food with off-brand if it's not the same texture she won't eat it. She very picky eater. She not getting enough nutrition because will hardly eats the food we give her. She will take the chicken nuggets, fries, tots, bananas, and cheers but won't eat other good like vegetables, any meats, and fruits. She likes her food blended with fruits with milk. Her dietitian wants me to start doing sign language and put her on neocate Jr to get nutrition needs because of her low iron.
@One Guy Named Ivan I felt this in my soul XD I hear *everything* and it makes malls a nightmare. Nothing like playing skyrim with the sound almost all the way down and still hearing that awful nirnroot humming. I really wish they would have made that sound a bit more tolerable, it's almost infuriating to me
OMG NO WAY! Maybe the pepper is an autistic thing then :O because I too find it hot/spicy and that's another reason why I don't like spicy foods even bell peppers. x
I get a lot of the problems you mentioned. Sounds are the worst for me though. I can't stand high pitch sounds, or the opposite. Sub bass gets me really bad. People don't understand that it's not a matter of just not liking it. It's not annoying. It's excruciatingly PAINFUL!!! and cannot be ignored! They say stupid things like, "Don't let it bother you." I don't LET it bother me. The @$$h0les who have it going on didn't ask me if I minded, and they're hurting me WITHOUT MY CONSENT!

Mine usually start when I'm not entirely comfortable so my skin rubs on my pillow or my pillows make the wrong noise
