Considered a young Austrian talent for the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Winter Games, Leonhard Stock however, having fractured a collarbone only two months previous to the Games, he was initially only selected as a reserve for the team.
As the Games approached, Stock began impressing in the Pre-Games practice runs and was promoted to the first team. One day later, despite never having won a World Cup race previously, he took the Olympic gold medal, with fellow Austrian Wirnsberger taking silver and Steve Podborski from Canada winning the bronze medal.
