Got one of these Mk2 Focus myself, intended to buy to sell on but I think I'll be keeping it long-term as it's a great car. Just thought I'd mention, these 1.6 Zetecs in the Focus can suffer from rainwater and screenwash fluid dripping down and collecting in the recess for the spark plugs/HT leads. I’m always late to your parties however, yet again, having just bought a Fiesta with the 1.25L engine, your video is a wealth of good information. Superb!
Thanks for a great video. As a mechanic some 25 years ago I am now confined to home DIY due to age and this video gave me the info I needed to work on a "modern" engine. I would add though that for the average home mechanic the main problem with this job is the removal and retorqueing of the crank pulley bolt. It is VERY tight and my quality zip gun and small home compressor had no chance of removing it. You need a large compressor capable of producing a continuous 8 bar+ to get the required power from an impact wrench, which of course most decent garages will have. I strongly recommend using the Sealey flywheel locking tool (don't get a cheapo tool made of low quality steel) and organise a long (at least a metre) bar to obtain the necessary leverage to undo this bolt and similar to retorque the new bolt when you have got the new belt on and timed.
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated! the flywheel locking tools are really useful.. I must admit its easy to take the buzz gun for granted when we have a decent air supply 👍
I did this job as a green diy mechanic and I can confirm that your comment is spot on! I was moderately well prepared, ( no air gun), I improvised some pulley blocking tool and pulled my ass off with a breaker bar to get it loose. Tensioning: I didn't manage to set it to the required torque, so i just set it as tight as i could. I used the locking pin during tensioning and I bent it out of shape. The car is still running perfect, six years and 45000 km later.
Great video mate, very clearly explained! Doing this next week with my 2007 1.4 Fiesta - fingers crossed all goes well. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos, cheers!
Wasn’t too bad, just a couple of things were a nightmare; the cam sprockets were a half tooth out on the belt so I had to loosen the exhaust cam bolt to tension the gap, and the auxiliary stretch belts were an absolute c**t. Definitely damaged the bearing on the water pump as there is a slight wobble, but as it’s a beater daily so it’ll do for now. Good luck mate

If the belt don't fit off the cuff, you only need to undo the rear sprocket and let the tensioner off to pick up the slack. Can't for the life of me understand why people undo both. Great video - forgot the torque settings so was dead handy that this came up.
Wrong !!! always loose both cam sprockets, then release tensioner to pull belt taut, it's the only way to get even tension in the new belt, then nip tensioner bolt up to to torque spec, then nip cam sprockets up to torque, then crank damper pulley.
@@mickeymouse4897 nonsense. The tension is picked up between the crank and the exhaust cam. Good video mate but just a warning that whacking that bottom pulley can easily damage it, there is a special ribbed belt pulley puller available to do it easily and safely.
Thanks for the comment, I dont tend to but some people may put some on the crank pulley bolt , I don’t like to as it makes them mega hard to get out in the future and I’ve never had a problem not doing 👍
Nice video, just a couple of things I'm surprised you didn't torque the crankshaft bolt ...and could not use the alternator pivoting on the bottom bolt to put that nightmare of a belt on..👍🏻
👍 thanks .. I never do tbh mate , with a decent buzz gun saves have to lock the flywheel to torque it .. using tools on a regular basis you get an idea for what right .. I’ve never had any trouble yet but I’d agree if you unsure and can torque it correctly then definelty do it 👍
Hi guys just watched your video for changing the water pump and timing belt on the ford fiesta , just a question is the bottom pulley bolt a normal thread or left handed thread ? Oh just want to say great video couldn’t have started to tackle this without it thanks guys 👍
great video, i would concerned about that o/s strut which is rusty and the engine oil does not look very good either.i used to do cortinas in the 70s.it was a lot easier
Great job lads , very informative along with all the links, just one question, as a one man diy job how long should the job take to do, in a ball park figure will do.
@@diydaly 4 hours is what a professional mechanic needs. As a total beginner it took me a week to read in, and two days on the job, 16 hours, four to five times what a professional needs. But I did a good job with no shortcuts.
Great video. How would you tighten the crank pulley bolt if you were using a ratchet/torque wrench? Same way with pin and bar in place? or pin out and bar out in 4th gear with brakes pressed ?
Hi on some engines you could get away with using bolts etc instead of the pins but on this Ford engine you really want to use the proper kit.. if you check the description below my video I’ve put a link to the pin kit 👍
Hi Gav, this is a really informative video thanks for sharing! With the absence of an air gun, would it be possible to torque up the crankshaft bolt with the car being in 4th gear and someone being hard on the brakes, in the same way as you describe to loosen off the bolt. I don't want to apply that much torque against the timing pin and bend it, and ideally I don't want to remove the starter to access the flywheel either. Any thoughts? Thanks
Hi Mates, Thanks for this awesome video! It helped a ton as I am usually more of a Honda guy. Anyhow, I changed the timing belt on my mates car. And it runs nicely and upon startup it idles fine at 1000 before dropping down to about 750 when warmed up. However in our quick test drive when we left the car idle at a gas station it began to idle a little roughly at around 750rpm. With a repeating "luggin" type noise. This also caused a dimming in the headlight so it makes me feel it's serpentine belt related. I am 99% sure timing is bang on. As it is driving fine with no issues at different speeds throughout the rev range. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated! 😁
So I fixed it. Tore it all down again and checked timing. This time the timing tool wouldn't slot into both the camshaft slots at the same time. So one of my timing was the issue. I undid the cam pully bolts. Lined the cams up and put the crank to the TDC locking pin. Started the car and all issues are gone. 😁👍
Sorry for the late reply! Been away for the bank holiday weekend! Was just reading the first message and see you have fixed it now 👍👍 glad to hear it , always a pain when there on floating pulleys! Much better when the have keyways! 👌👍
I started doing the cambelt change and when I turn the crank over i think the valves are hitting what do you advise i might of let the timing out.Very slightly
Will the pin/camlock kit be suitable for a 2007 Ford Fusion? Excellent video mate. going to take a crack at the replacement myself. 1 more question,, if using a breaker to take the crank pulley off you leave the pin in yes? Do you still need to put it in gear & hold the brakes in that situation?
Thanks for the comment.. it will fit the fusion. yeah just put it in 4th gear and get someone to hold the brake hard down.. or lock the flywheel teeth.. you shouldn't leave the timing pin it as there's a good chance you'll bend it
Thanks for the comment Andy! The autodata procedure recommends replacing the bolts every time but tbh I’ve often refitted them with no issues , as long as there torqued correctly you should have any bother.. if the bolts come part of a kit etc and I’ve had to remove them I will always use the new ones 👍
Hi, thank you for such an informative video. Can I ask would this be the same for a 61 plate 1.6 petrol focus zetec? I've paid a garage to change the cambelt and water pump but they only changed the cambelt, telling me the water pump isn't driven by the cambelt.
Thanks for the comment.. 😁 Yeah it would be the same .: strictly they are correct in that the water pump isn’t driven by the timing belt.. it is driven by the auxiliary belt . the reason for replacing the pump whilst doing the timing belt it that the water pump body sits behind the timing belt and the timing belt tensioner bolts to the water pump.. so if your water pump was to fail you’d need to take the timing belt off to replace it.. thus it’s con convenient to replace it whilst doing the Cambelt 👍👌
@@diydaly Can I ask you something? I want to remove the camshafts of my vehicle and service the pushers(tappet). To what torque should I tighten the bolts holding the camshafts? (Fiesta 2005 1.4lt petrol)
@@diydaly is the new gasket for the replacement water pump in the video the metal shim type gasket and if so are they better than the paper/card type gasket that you get with some water pumps?
Yes to tbh a lot of timing belt produces say about renewing the engine mount nuts / bolts , I’ve never replaced any unless they are damaged or threads worn.. you’ll be fine reusing them just torque them up correctly 👍
Brilliant video. I’ve got a 2012 focus (mk3) zetec with the 1.6 non-turbo petrol engine, believe it’s called a “sigma” engine. Water pump may be on its way out, do you reckon it’s a similar job to this?
Hi, if I remember correctly The crank only turns onto it (rather than locating into a hole) so undoing it wont catch it , I would only ever undo it with the pin in if using a decent impact driver to undo the bolt .. you should never attempt to undo it with the pin in if using a bar to undo 👍
Excellent description of the job thanks. What about torquing up the crank bolt if you don't have an impact gun? Can you finish it safely using 5th gear and foot on brake without danger of losing the correct timing? (pin out when you do that?) Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment , much appreciated 😁. Yes if I didn’t have a buzz gun I’d lightly nip it by hand with the pin in first then take the pin and torque it up with someone pressing the brake pedal hard down in 4th gear.. the timing shouldn’t alter but if I’d had to do it like that I would turn it over twice (2 full turns of the crank) then recheck the timing 👍👌
@@diydaly Thanks. I just bought a well maintained 07 1.6 with 64K. Belt looks fine but it is a Ford original so will look to do this job this year for peace of mind.
Thank You everso, but one question please. Is it simply the Torque on the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt that keeps the Floating Pulley in place on the Crankshaft? Obviously if it were to spin on the shaft, this'd be catastrophic
Great job fella !! Quick question how to I open the belt cover enough so I can turn it over to see the writing east on my belt without moving crank pulley? Just bought focus with 90000 and want to know if been changed already as all other belts and stuff have so hoping that has abs can leave for a year… thanks in advance
Hi thanks for the comment! So can simply remove the top cover and turn the engine over via the main crank pulley bolt , I think you’ll have to support the engine and remove the engine mount to get that cover off though I’m afraid

Great video lads thanks very informative cheers

Great video, always thought timing belt change was beyond my capability, but after watching this I might just have a go. I think I noticed a crack in the engine mount.
Go for it! they can seem daunting but just take your time and you'll suss it 👍👌
I did this job succesfully as a complete beginner. But looking back; a lot of things could have gone very wrong. But I would do it again. It's a serious task, keep that in mind.
@@tinus411 is she still running okay??

Thanks for the video buddy going be doing this soon gonna have to order the flywheel tool as i aint got no impact gun haha but great video shows everything
👍 glad it will help , thanks for the comment 😃
really great video..gotta be the best on you tube concerning this model. well done, everything explained. I'll be down to see you when mine needs doing..getting too old for all that bending over bonnets.. where are you based ?
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated 👌👍😃 .. based in Lincolnshire bud
Good video mate but just a warning that whacking that bottom pulley can easily damage it, there is a special ribbed belt pulley puller available to do it easily and safely.
Thanks for the comment and info Jerry 👌👍
Great video, did you use any thread lock on any of the bolts when refitting?
I’ve never had any trouble yet but I’d agree if you unsure and can torque it correctly then definelty do it 👍
Excellent thanks.
You are welcome!
Thanks for the comment Peter 👌👍
Hello! I had an alternator replacement, and you can tighten the belt with the alternator, you don't need a special equipment for it.
Depends which setup it’s got , if it’s got a stretchy belt they are a fixed alternator
Great job lads , very informative along with all the links, just one question, as a one man diy job how long should the job take to do, in a ball park figure will do.
thanks for the comments, much appreciated.. is a DIY attempt , id say allow yourself 4 hours so you can nicely take your time
@@diydaly 4 hours is what a professional mechanic needs. As a total beginner it took me a week to read in, and two days on the job, 16 hours, four to five times what a professional needs. But I did a good job with no shortcuts.
Hi can you help will this be the same procedure for ford escort mk6
I put the accesories belt on by unbolting the alternator :))), really anoying to do but doable after a lot of elbow grease....
Anyway that works will do mate 👌👍
Good video. Its been very useful . Im doing a fiesta 1.4Ghia. What output power is needed for the impact wrench?
👍 not sure exactly , you’ll need a fair powerfully one though
Great video. How would you tighten the crank pulley bolt if you were using a ratchet/torque wrench? Same way with pin and bar in place? or pin out and bar out in 4th gear with brakes pressed ?
Yeah like you say or I’d lock the flywheel with a tool 👍
thanks for the video . what is the lock tools call? could I use a little long screw to instead the lock pin?
Thanks
Thanks 👍 yeah you’ll will be Able to do it in 4th gear with the brakes held down , like you say definitely don’t do it with the timing pin in 👍
Do I need to take the timing belt on ford fusion 06 1.6 engine to replace leaking water pump?
Best video ever!🤩
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment!! 👌👍
Would suggest a LaValier mike to improve your audio. Great channel, thanks for posting. 👍
Thanks for the tip! will look into one 👍
Another way to get those stretch belts on is loop it round the crank and water pump then pull it over the alternator pully then refit the alternator.
👍👍
@35:40 put a screwdriver through 2 screw to lock the pulley. Now, you can torque it!
Wish there was a video of someone tightening the crank bolt properly
Hi Mates,
Thanks for this awesome video!
clear video thanks
You're welcome
I started doing the cambelt change and when I turn the crank over i think the valves are hitting what do you advise i might of let the timing out.Very slightly
Will the pin/camlock kit be suitable for a 2007 Ford Fusion?
Excellent video mate. going to take a crack at the replacement myself.
1 more question,, if using a breaker to take the crank pulley off you leave the pin in yes? Do you still need to put it in gear & hold the brakes in that situation?
Thanks for the comment.. it will fit the fusion. yeah just put it in 4th gear and get someone to hold the brake hard down.. or lock the flywheel teeth.. you shouldn't leave the timing pin it as there's a good chance you'll bend it
Great video, is it essential to replace the camshaft pulley bolts or just good practice?
Thanks in advance
Andy
Thanks for the comment Andy! The autodata procedure recommends replacing the bolts every time but tbh I’ve often refitted them with no issues , as long as there torqued correctly you should have any bother.. if the bolts come part of a kit etc and I’ve had to remove them I will always use the new ones 👍
I didn't replace them, saw no reason, car still runs fine 6 years later.
Depends on Model... Some the water pump was moved....To avoid touching the Keyless Crank Shaft bolt. As this applies to Mazda as well....
Thank you so much for this video. İts really helps to me
You are welcome! thanks for the comment
@@diydaly Can I ask you something? I want to remove the camshafts of my vehicle and service the pushers(tappet). To what torque should I tighten the bolts holding the camshafts? (Fiesta 2005 1.4lt petrol)
@@mordow Ill try find out for you , our automata has gone down at the minute! so I can't access it
@@diydaly is the new gasket for the replacement water pump in the video the metal shim type gasket and if so are they better than the paper/card type gasket that you get with some water pumps?
@@duncanobrien4951 yeah it is, erm yeah just as good tbh.. ive never really had issues with paper or metal, id rate both types tbh mate
The crank timing bolt you used in the kit was the middle sized one out of the three right?
yes it was mate
The Haynes manual says renew engine mounting nuts. I presume there is some locking feature. What do you think?
Yes to tbh a lot of timing belt produces say about renewing the engine mount nuts / bolts , I’ve never replaced any unless they are damaged or threads worn.. you’ll be fine reusing them just torque them up correctly 👍
Does the fiesta 1.25 petrol engine only have one auxiliary belt?
Brilliant video. I’ve got a 2012 focus (mk3) zetec with the 1.6 non-turbo petrol engine, believe it’s called a “sigma” engine. Water pump may be on its way out, do you reckon it’s a similar job to this?
Yeah I’m sure it should be the same
Hi , may I ask if you DID leave the pin on crankshaft while loosening the pulley bolt ? Is there a risk of pin breaking inside engine ???!!!
Belt looks fine but it is a Ford original so will look to do this job this year for peace of mind.
yeah I normally like to do it when I buy a new car regardless, like you say "peace of mind" once its done 👌👌👍
@@cofty my belt was still in perfect condition, 16 years 114000 km.
Thank You everso, but one question please. Is it simply the Torque on the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt that keeps the Floating Pulley in place on the Crankshaft? Obviously if it were to spin on the shaft, this'd be catastrophic
Yes it is mate, seems mad I know but they do bite well, Ive never known one spin on the shaft .. id rather a keyway myself!
Great video mate.. my engine looks the same but it says duratec.. any difference?
yeah should be the same mate 👍
Great job fella !! Quick question how to I open the belt cover enough so I can turn it over to see the writing east on my belt without moving crank pulley? Just bought focus with 90000 and want to know if been changed already as all other belts and stuff have so hoping that has abs can leave for a year… thanks in advance
Hi thanks for the comment! So can simply remove the top cover and turn the engine over via the main crank pulley bolt , I think you’ll have to support the engine and remove the engine mount to get that cover off though I’m afraid
Lovely thank you man!! Defo gonna have a look in the morning fingers crossed it’s not original lol 🤞🏼
