Part of his appeal is his loyalty and he is a warrior so very valuable to the empire It seemed it was inevitable for him to remain in his position. I read comments stating that Aybige was fictional. That plays a part in the necessity for the outcome as it was included. Still makes me sad though.
So, the irony, of sorts, is that, overall, I don't think Aybige is necessarily a bad partner for Mustafa, even if it'd be more platonic than romantic The woman he eventually falls for, Mihrünnisa, is very much like Aybige, after all. The way that Aybige is being clearly pushed to fit a mold she dislikes is uncomfortable, though.
