This song is a piece of art.
Indeed
totally agree. Black Mesa also is a piece of art
Well I've heard some total garbage on radio so I cannot say that all the music is art :p
End Credits 1: "OMG I survived and won!"
End Credits 2: "But what about the next time?.."
Even with the effort in Black Mesa, it was in vain.
Gordon couldn't have stopped the Combine in time.
But yet, there's another chance.
Welcome to City 17.
Behold,The Combine,I wonder how would it be if CMB is really on Earth now,I sugest we wouldn't write this or listen to this! :D
Penguin Universal Union is unstoppable, but Earth's Division "Overwatch" is a different talk.
When you say that it reminds me of the credits 1 music playing and the remains HECU who have escaped in transport cheering and be happy but most are upset to what happened to their comrades. Then all falls apart when the Combine invade and the soildiers go back into a hell they've underestimated.
Train metaphor explains this very well. The game begins and ends within the train, just like how it travels on a linear track, you can't step out of the line Gman had drawn for you, taking away the illusion of liberty. So your actions don't matter at all. I can almost read this idea within the music that plays during your first train ride through the Sector C Test Labs.
@@lefleiner3408 "Universal Union is unstoppable" you have a source for that claim?
funny how these two tracks, and _especially_ this one, left me endlessly waiting for the next part, but now that they're finally here, and as fantastic as they are, there's a small part of me that misses these two tracks, thank you for the legendary soundtrack you provided for Black Mesa
This what you call an ending soundtrack.
*End Credits
Dean Minchella No.
Dean Minchella This music is played at the end of the game, so i meant it would be in the credits.
+Oxygen Waster You really are an oxygen waster.
Our Lord and Saviour Gabe Newell NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I'll miss this song, almost broke down when I heard it. Shame it isn't in the definitive edition since it's so conclusive and fitting. Joel, your music is amazing and you've done an outstanding job with this entire soundtrack.
I would agree
I actaully cried while listening to this song.
i cry evrytime i reached the end of any half life episode
lol same

Nein _ me too :(
I think it fits perfectly where the remake left us. We just jumped in the portal taking us beyond space and time, and if the voyage was instantaneous, in that very brief instant, only made eternal by the way the game "pause" it here, Gordon Freeman is traveling across stars, leaving a doomed Earth, alone, anxious and uncertain, thrown into the depths of the terrifying reaches of the uncharted darkness of the universe.
Nice analogy. I've read this 6 years ago. Now I found it again... It's still good analysis.
10 years later and the comment still hits hard
This whole soundtrack is a masterpiece. I felt a whole range of emotions listening to this and felt like I was transported to another world. Absolutely gorgeous. Well done, man.
I'm pretty sad this song was replaced in the new Xen update. It's one of the most evocative pieces I've heard. It really makes me reflect on what happened at Black Mesa and what effect it would have of the world. The new credits music is good but it just doesn't compare.
Also just the entire soundtrack is amazing in general.
Unfortunately the tone of this song does not fit the tone of the Xen ending. It was tried out and unanimously decided by the team that it required a replacement.
@@JoelNielsenMusic Hmmm. I guess I understand that. Xen is sort of epic. Again you did a really fantastic job everywhere. I plan to follow whatever you make next. Thank you for replying :)
Honestly, I kinda wish there was a way to have both. Like the transition from HL2: Episode 1 to Episode 2, with Xen as it's own next chapter, since it really is a thing entirely of its own. While this song really drives home the tragic aspects of the Black Mesa incident. All those scientists dead, the doom of Earth, Gordon Freeman losing his life & autonomy as he's forced onto a path by powers infinitely greater than himself, the desperate plunge into the unknown through the teleport at the end.
I get that it'd split the product in a way that's both inconsistent with HL1, and the intention to have the two parts as one seamless experience, and it would be an abrupt ending with the teleportation sequence so I understand there are many reasons the current arrangement is a better decision- but the original credits really did bookend the Black Mesa chapters nicely, and it felt kinda-like giving the Black Mesa part of the story a well-deserved sendoff.
@@JoelNielsenMusic I suppose it only really makes sense in the context of Half Life 2, considering that all the efforts in Xen were ultimately paving the way for the Combine to filter through and utterly ravage Earth. In a sense, this song harkens the dark age that's about to impact Earth. But you don't really know about that in HL1, so I get why they voted to remove it.
You can always Play 2012 version
End credits 1:I've won!!
End credits 2:But at what cost...?
Love the violin!
and the girl's voice in the background
@silverGabeNeyes bruh stop being a nerd there was an actual girl in the backround
OG Paul No. I talked to Joel a couple months ago. He said it’s a synth in this song. (The violin is real though)
Xen Soundtrack has a real female voice
“The Xen Soundtrack was a different beast. I knew we were going somewhere entirely different out of the gate. This opened the game musically for me to experiment, which I began around 2016.
The opening track when you arrive on Xen was the first piece I wrote. I originally had the synth/bassline kicking around for a few months, and it seemed to fit with the concept art, but was missing something. My wife and I were hanging out in the studio one night, and we had had a few glasses of wine, so I coerced her to go into the booth and sing 'something' over what was there. What you hear in the game is mostly that first take. (Had to tweak a couple of things later on) But that was the birth of the Xen OST.”
I’m going to miss this song
Years later this peice is one of the best in the whole soundtrack. As a kid I hated it but a few years ago I fell in love with it
I.. crying.. its very good.. nostalgia..
I feel so bad about those people who have died in Black Mesa.
I almost feel worse for the people who have to live in the world created by it. The unknown horrors of the Combine await them all.
TO BE CONTINUED...
In the next episode
(early every century, central standard time)
+Enrique Lezcano ..Black Mesa Xen .

Fun Fact:
If you decide to get the Rare Specimen achievement (send the hidden hat to Xen), after that you will see a wittle secwit
At least in the Steam version
Yeah, first Black Mesa Xen.. then half-life 3? Possibilities are endless
*To be continued meme song plays* (Song: Yes- Round About)
I can listen to this ALL day long... So beautiful man...
its been almost 10 years since we had a half life game... I got the lambda logo tatted on my shoulder for a reason. I refuse to remove it until we get either a sequel or some sort of closure from Valve.
What is valve even up to!?! What could have taken them this long? I want to know!
Nate Hindman
Basically operating/moderating Steam... As far as we know. Or maybe they're going to push out another PoS game like Evolve.
Let's say if they are actually developing the game which they most likely are by all the hints they are giving us they want to make it a completely new experience somethind that was never seen in the game industry before half life 1 and 2 always were groundbreaking achievements in the game industry so they most likely dont want to release something dissapointing
If Valve said no, i was going to remove it and replace it with a broken one...
Derek John
There was a leak on Reddit recently where someone was talking about the production of the game. Usually I don't trust Reddit, but this sounded awfully close to exactly what you'd expect the third half life to be. He said something about "Very unique procedural generation, a story focused around Gman, and a new feature in the half life universe that allows for choices to be made at every turn that will change the gameplay." Also, JJ Abrams is working on a Half Life/Portal movie series. I Imagine the game will most likely release around the time that the movie does.
And this is real music of games, no other game has made a Soundtrack so good that makes your emotions listen to this and feel like something is happening, you have very good taste in music man, good job.
I would love to see this performed on an orchestra.
A great, melancholic song giving that bittersweet feeling.
I carry this soundtrack with me for many years now, popping up every now and then to take me away. So beautiful, so much emotion in it. If there was only a longer version of this...
RIP one of the best franchises
If Valve won't hire you for a job, apply for a job at a great indie company.
He already did. He's part of music composer for Black Mesa in Crowbar Collective (the indie company that made BM:S)
...and you are replying to a 3-year old comment.
@@MondySpartan maybe he didnt FUCKING know

@@ManLikeEddy exactly
I still miss this piece as part of the ending credits. I do understand why it was cut since it doesn't fit as well with the triumphant feeling of the Xen ending, but I still wish it was used as like a secondary part after a more initially fitting first. It's a track that really speaks to the tragedy and horror of Black Mesa and makes you want to introspect on the journey you just accomplished. It's why I always go back and listen to it after every play through of Black Mesa even now.
Freeemannnnnnnnnn............

Comes anotherrrrr...
The last. I am. The last. I am.
What are with Lamar??
Wow 10 years have passed since this upload, God i feel old
Barney looks back at black mesa as he drives away. shepard sits down forever to be trapped. gordon thinks about going with gman or ''fighting a battle that you have no chance of winning'' The HECU Marines and the Black OPs soldiers leave black mesa behind only to fight a even worse battle
I had to smoke during this one, it was a fantastic listening to all these, didn't skipped a single one, feels like I just played through the whole game again.
this song and the main theme is two masterpieces
Barney! Give me that beer!
20 years and he still owes me one...
Shotgun Brock haha
+sans the skeleton (several years later)about that beer i owed to ya' its me gordon

+Infiltrator Still no beer >_
The cold bitter taste of reality... you are no hero,no paladin of justice. All those lifes wasted, all that fear and confusion before the end you could not stop, all those inocent alien animal lifes that were as just confused and scared as you were, killed because you had no other choice, all those alien slaves that were dead either way because their life was living hell where they come from and where they are now... and all for what? For a man with a contract... Gordon never talks because he is suposed to be you, he is silent because he is a killer that faces these emotions everytime he takes a life a little bit of him is lost. But he will have the last laugh, because one day he will be able to put an end to who started all of this... One day...

I'm going to miss hearing this at the end credits when the full game comes out. Still happy that I'm able to see the whole game come out at all
Turn the speed up to 2 and it'll be alot brighter.
+TyrannWright OHMERGAHD
my video is still the same brightness???
masterpiece.
This is one of the most gut wrenching pieces ive ever heard and I never even played hf or black mesa
At about 1:43 you hear the very same sound that played as you first began on the tram ride. Beautiful.
Which makes it possible to loop soundtrack perfectly.
I love this track so much that i was exited to see what i would see when i got black mesa and when i got it i fell in love with black mesa joel Nelson you did a amazing job with the soundtracks
I learned this song on piano a long time ago when it first came out. great OST.
oo i just learnt it today. i can play the two melodies independently but i havent yet been able to play them together hahaha
Many years late, but I just want to say that I love that the end of this track uses the same sort of ambiance from Inbound Part 1...as if you're going right back to the beginning...
I learned to play this on my violin a long time ago. Still one of my absolute favorite songs to play!
This game has such great soundtrack
At the very end, I hear the same tune that plays in the main menu when you first start the game. Hasn't failed to give me chills every time.
I just... wanna cry.
Come on man... Come on. I'm not crying. You are crying.

I remember going through music files and listening to end credits theme and it was amazing to be honest. I really wish someone made an extended version of this song.
Can’t wait for Black Mesa: City 17
The violin itself has a melancholic feel to it.
*that’s one of the things i love everything about this song*
I love you dude.. this.. this is a masterpiece and whoever disliked are people who were angry about no Xen
This, Questionable Ethics 1 and Blast Pit 3 were my favorites from the Pre-Xen music. A bit sad that this isn't gonna play in the game anymore since Xen's credits have new music, but nevertheless, I absolutely love this track.
End Credits 1: I have won
End Credits 2: But at what cost?...
I never played the game. From all of the Valve franchises, I only played Portal and Portal 2.
But I freaking love this music. I should play all of the Half-Life games, I guess?
*DO IT*
you better do it
I've had a bug in my head for this one And i was never happier to hear it
I decided to play through the 2012 black mesa just to see how much the game changed and I did not expect to hear these 2 masterpieces at the end
While the other two new songs do fit better, and should be the credits. I like these as individual songs better.
After all this time, I have just now heard the main leitmotif of Black Mesa in this composition. Joel never ceases to amaze
end credits for humanity
The end
ITS NOT OVER
when people say it's a violin but in reality it's a viola
I also call it a viola.
The Remakings It got strings so it's a violin!
Viola? Nope, Violin!
Cello? Nope, Violin! (a rather big one)
Bass? Nope Violin! (also pretty big)
Guitar? Nope, Violin! (Smaller then the bass en Cello but still quite big)
+The Remakings What about a violalin?
HQDefault lol ... just stop
Honestly speaking I absolutely LOVED every second of Black Mesa Source. I could not even stop playing. I haven't had such fun playing a game since... HL1 !!!
I loved every bit of it. The sound FX. The new visuals. The minor modifications and "new things". The amazing soundtrack. The great gameflow.
I mean wow. Seriously. REALLY an amazing job and I still can't believe all of this is for free!! Valve should give you guys money for this. It's amazing!
Only a few songs ever have brought me to tears before, and half of them were from this game’s soundtrack. Truly beautiful and inspiring work
I can't wait for the Opposing Force remake!!
RamYouUptheButt that game is RIP
Actually not really. They recently updated their blog on Steam Greenlight and they are preparing to make the game playable which means that Operation Black Mesa will likely release this Summer or Fall. As for Duty Calls... that's going to be a DLC to OBM.
RamYouUptheButt blue shift too
Lol you were so wrong about OBM. It's not even close to being done.
It gives ne chills
Thats amazing im love it!
My mostly loved, emotional, touching song. I fell in love with it since its first version in the pack of about 6 songs first publically available. Thanks you so much for you hard work, Joel.
I love this music so much ! It would be awesome if Joel Nielsen could release an extended version, because 2 minutes is a far too short dureation for a song that good !
(Thumbs up if you want an extended version !)
0:16 DAT SNIFFLE THO IT WAS SO SAD! (you can hear a sniffle if you listen close enough, trust me.)
Yup i hear it thx pal👍
Dammit! Now I'll never be able to unhear that!
and it repeats in the song. its like how violin players breath while they are playing, rhythmically and loud. well at least my sister does while she is playing with violin, i thought thats just her personal style but i suppose not.
I say that words can't express this feeling
Dr.Magnusson hmm
Whenever, I listen to Half-Life music, it feels like Gordon is going through redemption or it that he feels that it's his fault. I feel bad for him and I love the music too.
Black Mesa in a nutshell:
Black Mesa inbound: Does this tram ever stop?
Anomalous Materials: When are we starting this experiment?
Unforeseen Consequences: WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?
Office Complex: Walking through an ENTIRE office building just to get to an elevator
We've Got Hostiles: Killing dozens of troops just to push a button
Blast Pit: Hop scotching around a giant octopus creature to push like, five buttons?
Power Up: WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?
On a Rail: Did I already pass that station?
Apprehension: SHAAAAAARK (Freeman's Mind reference)
Residue Processing: I think I might need a map
Questionable Ethics: Where is everybody??
Surface Tension: TOO MANY TANKS!!!!
Forget About Freeman: What the heck is going on anymore?
Lambda Complex: Hmmmm which teleporter do I take?
Xen: Where in the heck am I???
Gonarch's Lair: WHAT THE CRAP AM I LOOKING AT?
Interloper: WHY SO MANY TENTACLES?
Nihilanth: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111
ENDGAME:Time to choose...
Lmao
It's actually sad that g-man detonated a nuke and blows up the entire black mesa which you can see in opposing ending
And over 2200+ K.I.A
I get the *Freeman's Mind (Half-Life 1)* Reference there.
so today I "finished" Black Mesa once again, this song is pure art, and I can't wait to hear it again after I'll play whole new xen which is coming soon :3
It's almost like a foreshadowing to the depressing events in Half-Life 2...
I love this song but it for some reason it fits with cry of fear. But anyway its great. good job
Dude... Both those comments were so poetic and awesome...
If you slow it down and watch the ending of HL2 Episode 2 (The very end, right before the credits roll) this goes rather well with it.
Missed this track in the new version, the new ones are great too though.
I played all of black Mesa thinking this was the end credits of it. The entire reason I played it was because of this song and I came to find out this song was released 8 years ago, I’m a moron lmao 😂
Where did I hear this song before? I liked it a lot then, and the eery edge that's been added for Black Mesa makes it even better. I can't remember the name of it from before for the life of me.
To be continued in 3012.

Its like a farewell as it was the last time we heard about Freeman
They must hire Nielsen for HL3. They simply must. It's obvious
STUNNED!!! :O...OMG this is.... Just finished Black Mesa.. End game.. 13 Years ago, i bought 2 3DFX Voodoo2 GFX-cards (expensive!), and put them in SLI mode for best performance, and played HL1. Since then, I never encountered a game matching it. Today I finished the best game I have ever played. Listening to this breathtaking end-music, I´m wrapped in a warm blanket of gratitude, and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you guys for giving me my best moment in gaming. I'm humble towards part 2.
Listening to the song and reading your comment made it awesome... ^.^

Your comment made me cry tears of happiness and wonder. This is such an amazing game. Just the music and what it conveys is intriguing and awe-inspiring to me.
Super music.
This is incredible.
I just had the most fulfilling feeling when I completed the first part of Black Mesa. You ever had the feeling that you just completed one of the best series, even if it's not fully complete? This song gave me that emotion. Great mod and great music.
