  • There are so many high-quality spelling and phonics programs available, but here’s why Words Their Way is my favorite and the one I’ve used for all three of my kids:
    • developmentally appropriate and based on extensive research on how the brain learns spelling
    • puts child in active learning role (hello, self-education!)
    • Simple!
    • multi-sensory
This is what Charlotte Mason said about spelling and phonics instruction:
"Naturally; for though many of our English words are each a law unto itself, others offer a key to a whole group, as arrow gives us sp-arrow, m-arrow, h-arrow; but we have alternate days--one for reading, the other for word-building--and that is one way to secure variety, and, so, the joyous interest which is the real secret of success." (Home Education, p. 214)
In this video I show you how I’ve simplified the the Words Their Way method for home education and what that looks like in real lessons. I alternate word sorts every other day with reading lessons.
As always, if you have any questions about this method leave a comment below.
I’m sharing my PDF checklist in Patreon along with detailed instructions for using words their way. If you’re interested in becoming a member click the link below ⬇️

Thank you for sharing this program. I was all set to purchase All About Spelling for one child and Phonetic Zoo for another but now I’m leaning towards this. It looks great and I can get a whole package for $150 and I can use it for all my kids forever!

Thank you so much for this video! I bought this curriculum last August because of a video I watched on your instagram and was so confused at how to implement it (even with the teacher’s guide). I went back to using All About Spelling. But you are right, it is a very passive way to learn. After watching this I’m going to give “Words Their Way” another shot. Thank you so much for taking the time to put together this video!

It is very confusing, especially when the WTW teachers guide is 300+ pages long! I’m glad this was helpful, and I hope it makes it easier to implement WTW at home now ❤️

Thank you!! I’ve tried 4 different reading and LA curriculums and haven’t liked any of them for my boys! So workbook heavy and don’t make sense to me. I think this is exactly what I’m looking for!! Simple, effective, hands on! Thank you!
Where can I find the Words their Way manuals I need? And what are the exact names of the individual manuals you showed? It looks like they’ve maybe updated it but I want to make sure I’m getting what you have. 😅 Thanks!
Update: never mind! I think I figured it out! Found a great blog post that laid out each manual and when you need each one. Looks like I can get them off thrift books and such. Yay! Excited to give this a try!

Great! The thing I love (and my boys love) is that it isn’t workbook heavy, so I hope you end up enjoying it!
In Patreon and in my curriculum guides I have a cheat sheet to help you figure out which level you need based on your child’s development stage they’re in. But I’m glad you found one online! 👍🏼 and you can find them used on Thriftbooks (which is what I did) and another mom just let me know that she found the newest edition as a whole set on christianbook.com as a “homeschool package”

This is so helpful! Our style is eclectic and I am thinking of using CM method for LA in the fall. Would you still suggest your form 1 curriculum guide even if we are just doing CM for one subject?

I’m going to post a lot about language arts in Patreon over the next month, so i think that will be enough to get you started on language arts, no need to buy the curriculum guide if you’ll only be needing guidance on LA.

Do you know if there’s much of a difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions of this program? Which edition do you use?

I have an older used version. I’m not sure what the differences are, but I do know they renamed it “word study” instead of “words their way.” You can get the newest editions on their website.

Curious if you do “written” sorts for your older students? Almost like a spelling test?

Also do you set timers for these activities? And do them a few times a week?

I do written sorts with my oldest son. I usually do it after a blind sort.

Great video! Couple questions for you though. What if your child cannot read the words in the initial sort? Do you just tell them what the word is? Or maybe spend extra time with initial letter sounds? Also, I recently started following your channel & was wondering which (if any) spine curriculum you use for your Form 1 boys? AO, A Gentle Feast, CMEC?

I would show them the “head words” and show your child how to sound them out phonetically. Then give them the rest of the words and have them sort by sight (how words are spelled) and sound. If a child is stuck by an oddball or just can’t spell it, help them sound it out. But if they continue to have problems with that sort I would take a break for a few weeks to a couple months and try again later. It simply means they’re not at that developmental stage yet.

As for spine, I don’t use any CM curriculum, I make my own based on Charlotte Masons methods. I started by following A Delectable Education templates. I just enjoy picking the books we read based on my children’s interests 😊
