Absolutely not its very offensive to call sheltie s lassie or mini collies there a sheltie I have had 2 sheltie s their a amazing breed so are collies I have to beautiful collies as well
I use to think that Shetlands were mini-Rough Collies, but they are actually more unlike as breeds, than alike ... ... so, no, a Shetland isn't a 'minature Rough Collie', if you want to get technical, but if you want Rough Collie, but in minature, especially as Rough Collies are pretty big, then yes, why not ... Also, all the dogs that ever played Lassie were male, even though Lassie is referred to as she ...
By far the smartest and most well behaved dog I have ever had Never growled at or snapped at a baby even when they pulled on her poor little ears. Got her in the summer, she was potty trained before fall. Loves to play fetch and she can jump crazy high. They do bark A LOT though. Squirrels are the bane of her existence

Fantastic breed!! Two of these treasures helped raise our first two grandsons... taught the second one to walk. So gentle and patient. RIP, Piper and Tucker. We miss you still. 💔
THEY ARE WONDERFUL...SMART ...and they are tougher than they look. They are EXCELLENT watch dogs....and they are EXCELLENT with children. They WILL watch over all of you...WOOF!!!!
EXCELLENT with children! A little yappy (as are most dogs bred for herding), and require lots of brushing. But they’re loving, protective, smart, personable, and friendly if socialized. I remember my old Bonnie “protecting” me from the vacuum cleaner lol.
I love this. I had two shelties. The first one was born on my birthday, different year. My mom named him Laddie. My mother's parents were from Scotland, so a fitting name for sure. When Laddie was 12, I then rescued my second Sheltie. They were inseparable. So smart. Smarter than me sometimes. The best years of my life. I miss my children so so much. I pray someday I can get another. The best breed anyone can have, hands down. Thank you for this.😇😪❤️
Shelties absolutely need to be socialized at a very young age. If not they will be aloof and fearful of most people and noisy places. They tend to bond to only one person in the household usually the one that feeds, plays with and exercises them.
Wea are a sheltie family. We lost our 14 year old Isis last Thursday, cancer. She was found, believe it or not, in a dog pound and a double surrender (the original surrender and a grandmother who didn't realize how active they are). They tried to talk us out of adopting her. But we did and she was so very sweet. We have a 3 year old boy, Sully, that was born on the day that our other Sheltie, Rhi, passed. We need another baby because Shelties do better with a buddy. And I highly recommend these sweet babies.
I had a sheltie who was pretty overweight and laid back. This also meant she didn’t have the skinny snout. She was both types of pattern and had really blue eyes, and thus was named Blueberry Muffin. She raised one of our cats and then passed of bladder issues at a ripe old age when we started to consider putting her down. We buried her and then planted two blueberry bushes over her grave, which never grew any berries because squirrels kept stealing them.
I had a sheltie, his name was Hunter. He grew up with me, we got him when I wasn't even a year old, his birthday was exactly a year after mine. He was my best friend, we'd do everything together, but sadly he had to get put down last august. I miss him so much, rest in peace Hunter.
EXTREMELY SMART, amazing companions... My absolute best friends when growing up to teen years and early adulthood were shelties... My heart melts just seeing these videos
Yes!!!! Absolutely amazing dogs!!!! They do have a share of health problems like most purebred dogs so do your research with breeders. They also tend to be pretty aloof with other dogs, wanting to strictly follow communication protocols so Socialization is super important with these kiddos. They can also be timid, another reason why Socialization is important! Amazing breed for sure!
This is my favorite breed. The easiest breed to train that I've ever owned. They are incredibly smart, loyal and obedient. Great family dogs. They are protective and get along with almost everyone. We have 2 that are brothers and we love them.
I’ll tell you how smart they are, when I would toss a treat for him to catch he’d always miss , I thought it was bc of their long noses so I would try about 5 or 6 times miss every time miss … they miss on purpose to get more treats 😂😂😂
Ah you already did one in them. Sweet thank you! My best dog I've ever had was a border collie sheltie mix. Seriously was soooo smart, earned himself a silver metal after basically training himself to do the agility course we saw at a dog park. Was my PTSD dog, and opened, closed many doors I couldn't open or close myself. And worked with me when I went to work. Honestly a great mix of dogs. Would 1000% recommend.
High energy is an understatement. I had one who once ran the perimeter of my yard and did not stop for 4 hours. By the end of the day, the grass was completely gone and there was just a little trail he had made. Endless energy is the correct term. He would also bark at and try to herd anything that moved, especially leaves.
I got my first Sheltie over 2 decades ago… I was forced to put him down when he was 18 a couple years ago due to old age, and recently got a new Sheltie. I’ll never own another breed. They’re incredible animals.
"Despite their small size, they have plenty of energy." When has small size ever meant anything other than high energy?? So long as they have a functioning snout, that is. Sorry pugs.
Don't apologise. I never met a pug that wasn't suffering in someway. One couldn't stand for too long, but everytime he tried to lay down, it had to stand back up, due to rear joint pain. It was horrible to see, along with the constant panting for breath ...
My sheltie is my best bud. He loves to go on car rides with me. He stands on the centre console so I can pet him and he can see out of the front windscreen. He's a good boy and knows not to touch the gearshift. He's happy to wai in the car while I run into the shops. I'm never gone long but he's always in the driver seat when I come back 😂
@@seanhyena3769 Same here I feel your pain. I lost my sweet beautiful intelligent Sheltie to painful Bone Cancer at age 11. Worst day of my life to lose my Wendy girl.

Btw: Shelties and collies are separate breeds. There’s no “mini collies.” Collies are its own independent breed while shelties are mixed with collie + other herding breeds.
I had a Shelty and she was amazing, she was kind of the runt of the litter with buck teeth and was quite lazy, but she was great, as I was growing up she knew when to be gentle and when to be playful, me and my friends would run around the kitchen and have her chase us and she would play along, she was lazy and a lap around the block was enough for her, would definitely recommend a Shelty for a family dog though
As a kod, my parents ran a kennel breeding these dogs. It sure got loud and busy but it was so great to come home from school only to be welcomed by like a dozen shelties running up to you.
The ONLY breed I have ever had. Unfortunately there are very few SHELTIES in the USA WEST of the Mississippi.... so ....any one want to start breeding Shelites West of the Mississippi will have a willing market. I have been trying to get a shetland sheepdog for 5 years now. I have been ROBBED by 2 breeders and had a 5 K deposit returned after being passed over twice by the same breeder with promises for the next litter. The last breeder offered me the double merle that was deaf and blind and had a heart murmor.....yeah...I then demanded a refund and threatened to call the attorney. I am not having any luck and it has been 5 years....but that just show you HOW in DEMAND and HOW little SUPPLY there is out here in the west U S A.....WONDERFUL BREED....LOVE THEM ALL....even the double merle blind deaf heart murmer.....
You're not looking in the right places. There are Shelties being bred all over the country. I can tell from your post that you are trying to buy from backyard breeders, which is incredibly irresponsible. That double merle?? No respectable breeder would breed two blue merles together. Go to a local dog show. Talk to some Sheltie people there. If they think you have the breed's best interest at heart, are looking for a sound healthy pet, and are not going to be breeding, they'll be happy to help you find someone reliable. You can also go to the AKC site, go to the Sheltie section, and get the name and phone number of the national breed club. They will also help you. If, however, any of these people think that you are just going to start cranking out puppies, you will get nowhere. Breeding is for show people who understand genetics and all the different aspects of their chosen breed. Not just for people who have a male and a female and want to make a few bucks. Good luck in your search. But please stop telling random people on the internet that they should breed Shelties.
