Linear Rail Bearing Fix - Glides Like Butter!

  • In this video I explain the multi-step solution I found to get my linear rail bearings to glide on the rails while still having preload and no slop. This linear rail shown is from my FolgerTech FT-6 3D printer. One step I failed to mention was that it’s wise to clean the rails with a rag and some fresh oil in between each grade of honing stones as well as when the process is finished. The micro debris the homing stones creates can get lodged deep into cracks and in between the bearings and could cause issues. So be sure to clean thoroughly!

    Very good info. Finally someone that empasizes the importance of preload on the rails. Too many 3D printer vendors sells rails with too little preload.

      Thanks! You are so right…Preload MUST be present but at the same time not be too tight.

    Thank you for your solution for bad rails. The carriages I received were fine but the travel was very rough. Fortunately, I remembered seeing this video. I used the same stones you did (with water) and I now have 3 800mm linear bearing that are as smooth as you could ask for.

    Thanks for making a video where you get straight to the point of it. Tried watching 3 over videos and they go off on tangents.

    Thanks very much for the video, I will be sure to take on board what you say , I have a metre long ( 39 inches) rail arriving that sounds like I might have to hone a bit, its going to be the main part of the X gantry on my C02 laser. Still costing me 90 dollars so I hope its slightly better than the cheaper ones!! cheers

    Just an FYI, those sharpening stones are actually water stones. Using oil on them will cause the debris/slurry to stick in the pores instead of washing out like they do with water and will cause them to prematurely wear out as well as reduce they're sharpening ability. Also, to flatten them, instead of using one of the other sharpening stones, I would advise using truing/flattening stone. Not only do they work to flatten the full surface evenly (when used correctly), but will also work to clean out the residue from old sharpenings.
    That all said, I guess it's time to pull out my stones and give 'em a soak!

    very nice trick, not for all rails I think thoigh. Because I have hiwins here and they do not have a flat trench there, it is actually rounded, so you cant shave it that easy with a flat bar. Could help satill with removing edge burrs, which is usually where problem is located on most rails.

    Just went and replaced the exceptionally crappy, dragging bearings in my cheap cheerful chinese MGN12H rails with precision 3/32" (exactly 2.38mm) ceramic bearings.
    Well, original bearings were undersized and varied 2.35 to 2.36mm.
    Preload now is, well, extremely tight :(
    Will give the whetstones a go (not like I have much to lose)...
    Expect will have to do the same with my MGN9s too (pre-ordered 1/16" ceramic bearings for them... rails turned up with 1.98mm - 2mm bearings. Now 2mm precision ceramics are on the way)

    I was wondering about ceramic bearings but I couldn't find anyone talking about them. Do you notice a difference in the ceramic vs SS?

      I did notice a difference between the stock steel balls that my rails came with vs the ceramic ones I installed. I do believe the steel balls I started with were of poor quality.

      @@superjon78 Do you notice less binding and or flat spots using the ceramic ones? I just bought some 304 stainless ones to replace my cheap ones because they bind up and some have flat spots. if these new stainless are not any better, i might try ceramic ones.

    Yeah that's precise and very manual solution. Pretty impressive. How many balls per carriage and did you say 30 minutes per rail including the bearings? Nice work, you deserve the smoothest rail 😅

      If my memory serves me right, there were 32 balls per side on each carriage. Yes…30 minutes per rail. Something another viewer pointed out in the comments is these stones are water stones and recommended using water instead of oil next time.

    problem with this method is that u loose ball contact area...those groves are atleast in most rails not straight < shaped but more like ( shaped for balls to travel on...yes its cheap fix but it would be better to just let balls do the grinding in general :D ....will take a while but it will get smoother by itself if u run hardened steal balls or ceramic ones

      It’s been some time since I did this video. However, if my memory serves me well, it was either 32 or 36 of the little balls per track (2 tracks per trolly) inside the trolly. Take note, you want there to be perhaps one ball short of completely full in each track so all the balls have room to flow through their pathway without friction against all the balls

    i really don't think the factory preload is any resistance to the stepper motor. i think you just splitting hairs.

    I think you just got really junk rails. Cheap rails from aliexpress seem pretty smooth out of the box. Just needs some cleaning

      They are definitely junk rails. The purpose of this video was to demonstrate how to turn junk rails into good rails. Believe me when I tell you these things were thoroughly cleaned several times before going down this route. As well, as a machinist in a prior life, I took precision measurements to confirm my findings before and aft to ensure what I did here was factual rather than speculative.
