Yes!!! I've been looking for what track this was literally for 40 years! I saw the Stranglers in Atlanta in 81 on this same tour, and JJ sang this song that we loved. JJ was using something like a vocoder that heavily distorted his vocals, so we couldn't understand the words, but this has to be it. Eureka!!!!!
Have you ever heard the "true" story behind the men in black, I mean how it all started? And I don' t mean how the song was conceived... There was this legend about mysterious supernatural beings, men in black, who appeared in the homes of people who had made UFO observations...
That's JJ singing. He sang it on the Raven as well but through a vocal harmoniser. It's not weird enough for Dave who has a far more edgy voice. Listen to Genetix or Dead Ringer and you'll see what I mean.
No, it's definitely JJ. I asked him and Dave about it years ago after a gig in London. On "The Raven" Hugh sings Dead Loss Angeles, Baroque Bordello, Nuclear Device, Sha Sha A Go Go, and Duchess, JJ sings The Raven, Ice, Don't Bring Harry and Meninblack whilst Dave deals with Genetix. Longships is of course instrumental.
NannyWhip I remember an Interview with Hugh about the Raven (Track by Track) when it was Released in 1979 JJ"s Voice was simply sped up on the Meninblack track same technique as the Chipmonks/Smurfs/Diddy men etc..Dave has a Great Voice wonder why he stopped singing Lead Vocals after The Gospel According to The MIB?
I saw them sing this at a Manchester gig in 1981 on the La Folie tour. It was the last song of the second set of encores. The vocal was by JJ and it sounded like the album. I thought the effect was achieved using nitrious oxide laughing gas... anyone got any thoughts or evidence either way . Id love to know
I can't speak for the live versions, but I once slowed down the album version of this song while also isolating the vocals, and I'm 90% certain that the high-pitched voices are done by a female vocalist.
Insane. I definitely prefer this to the chipmunks version of 'The Raven' album. It's always a bit shocking to think that this bizarro clunker of a tune lead to the most excellent 'Meninblack' album, which I
For the love of God. IT'S JJ ON VOCALS.

Yeah, I saw them play Meninblack live at Leeds Uni in 1981. It was definately JJ singing it. Great to find it on here! :-)

The best song ever!!!!!!
Superb tune.
This version is great...has a Hawkwind in the 80s vibe.
Crazy! Never thought they would play this live. Great.
I saw them play it live at Leeds University circa 81.
Wow I must have this.

Dave sings "Peasant in the big shitty" too, on No more Heroes....
PERDÓN, LA MEJOR CANCIÓN DE LA HISTORIA DE LA MÚSICA.....
I saw them live at the Rainbow theatre in London in 1981 and they did play this song, but the vocals where distorted just as in the studio album.
Ok. cheers mate. Wasn't sure.

Where was this gig? I saw the vocal harmoniser version at The Glasgow Apollo in the same year
If I hadn't read the comments I would have been sure this was shuggy singing. prefer this to the album version.

The best version....porky....meats
SALVANDO LAS DISTANCIAS, ME RECUERDA A OTROS MARCIANOS....DEVO
@zunipus definantely . though i think the chipmunk voice gives it a better feel. more alien like. and creepy. thats why i like it.
@brenga66 JJB without a shadow
Sounds like the harmonizer took a night off that night...
yes it had a visit from the meninblack and was never seen again.
Sounds like Nick blinko from rudimentary peni honestly
@zunipus
With all due respect I prefer the album version,
very bizarre? but in a good way! Is that Dave singing?
Will Smith on vocals
🤣😂👏👏
cant tell if its hugh or dave singing here?
It's neither.
JJ
I am sure that's Hugh
Its JJ
Is not live version or raven version
Hmmmmm I reckon I can clean the audio up without fu£king it up..........
