  • C234 is a Leyland Leopard PSU3/4R with body built by CIE at the Spa Road Works Inchicore Dublin in 1966. A total of 270 were built from 1965 to 1968 in two formats, short and long wheelbase.
The C-class was a serious workhorse for CIE in the rural, expressway and town services and later the Dublin City Services. The last C-class withdrawn (C168) was withdrawn in 1996 from schools services ending the 32 year service life of the C. Many, including C168 and of course C234 have been preserved and restored.
C234 was allocated to Broadstone and Sligo garages however spent the majority of its service life in Galway.
It was delivered in the CIE red & white livery as a 53 seater, and in 1968 was one of a batch (C231-235) to be converted to a coach, receiving coach seats and the Brown & Cream livery. It worked the Galway - Belfast service in this format.
It was cascaded to schools services in 1986 by the introduction of the GAC KRs becoming CS234 in Yellow & White schools livery. It spent 9 years on schools until it was withdrawn in 1995. In 1997 it was restored to the 1968 period with coach seats, original domes and Brown & Cream livery. It has returned to Galway garage on numerous occasions.
This video was filmed the 12th April 2010 on an enthusiasts run around Dublin and Kildare.

Was this bus a School Bus in Galway in the early 90s? EZH 234 was the bus that brought me to my first day in secondary school in Tuam in Sept 1990, to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks for the information. I knew that she originally in Coach Tour configuration. I have a few books on CIE buses, and there a little piece on her. Great to see she is still purring away, sweet as ever. There is a real distintive exhaust purr out of her. Do you organise any Vintage CIE Bus rally? I would love to attend if you do.
