Using the editor software for the keystep you can assign the aftertouch to the mod output. That will allow you to use aftertouch for controlling things like the cutoff and res or even the pitch cv on your synths, which is great for adding real-time expression.
Thanks for the video! Please d0 a part 2 about running a DAW into the Keystep and back out to the modular. You mention that in the video, but I'm not sure how that works
I’m currently using Waveform 11 as my DAW. I’ve gone many different ways to achieve clocking between DAW and modular, but currently I’m using the usb from my pc into the Keystep 37, then sync out to a 2hp div, so I can distribute from there. The only issue in a way, is that you have to have the arpeggiator or sequencer on the keystep running, to output the sync/clock. Not really a problem, just a minor niggle!😊 You need to set the sync switches on the back to USB, and I found it awkward to figure which way they should be, but not impossible! I haven’t fully explored the MIDI control centre software that comes with the keystep, there may be more to help in there. Hope this helps!
I used Ableton as my midi clock going to a key lab 25 controller via USB, then use midi to other synth sound modules. Depending on how much midi gear you're going to use, getting yourself a midi in/out routing box is a good investment.
Glad I found your channel, really getting into building a rack synth system myself. Started with my pocket operators and my numerous headphone amps and dacs. Getting crazy ground loop so I got a rack mounted power conditioner. Then a rack mount 10 band EQ. And it's growing, but now I want a small eurorack to go along with whatever small synth I decide to buy. Going to watch the $500 build video next. Thanks man.
Mapping the velocity or aftertouch of a keystep to slightly modulate a parameter on a eurorack module adds massive amounts of expression while playing.
Do bread sticks count as a bread type? Because that's the best bread. Now I got something to mess around with after work. Never really touched the cv stuff on my keystep before (might have to get some longer cords).
Thanks for the video. I know the Arturia KS is the go to keyboard with CV for sure and it seems excellent. Wondering if there’s anything smaller though with similar CV (gate, pitch, mid) connections?
Just a few questions if anyone could answer it. You said the gate out is going into the maths controlling the VCA and the filter. What is it doing to the sound? Also if there is a knob for a certain function why would I want to plug a cv connection into it when I could just turn the knob? The pedal connection, is that a TS or TRS cable? Thanks perfectcircuit for doing this video, just had a few questions because I don't really understand some of it.
CV us used to modulate OVER TIME. so you don‘t need to perfectly wiggle 4 knobs with 2 hands at the same time. Maths can be used as an Attack-Decay envelope, so the signal goes up, then down. Maths can change the speed of each of those stages AND if the rise is linear or exponential. Sending that envelope to both filter and vca means you can shape how the filter and vca open OVER TIME. longer attack long decay sound more like a wind instrument, while 0 attack and short decay make it sound like a kickdrum.
The cable is what's called a "floating ring" cable, TS on the 3.5mm side but TRS on the 1/4" side. Some pedals do specialized stuff with the ring but general CV applications only care about the tip. Some pedals don't work if you connect the ring straight to ground so the floating ring cable leaves it unconnected
Speaking of the MPC (One) what splitting cable do I need to split the CV signals from the back? Some sort of mini TRS? If you can put a link to the Perfect Circuit page, it would be helpful. Thanks for the great video. I hope you have more planned.
New to using cv with pedals but been starting to mess with it. However I have been using a patch cable but putting a trs 1/4 adapter on it to plug into the expression jack and then plugging the ts side into whatever cv. Is that safe or am I playing with fire there?
Hey why do I need an di box. Do I need one with eurorack? Like.. I dunno. That stuff confuses me. Do I need one if in plugging my eurorack into something like a mixer or monitors? Like wtf
My story. So Ive making music like this since 97. So I thought I'd get into the syths setups etc. They said oh just plug anything into anything....ya didn't work turns out you need to know what cv etc does. Wasn't for me. To much going on to make music. And to be frank it's a very pretentious way to make music.
Apart from the fact that it's an expensive way to do music (so might attract some pretentious peeps) it seems to me to be super basic. With minimal gear you're pitch steps can be completely atonal and your phrases are likely outside your control and very repetitive. For me, that's refreshingly down to earth. I'm a seasoned jazz/classical pianist and I love tonal / classical music and I find modular synth stuff to be so unconcerned with the stuffiness of and closed mindedness of popular music
Easy my ass. Eurorack is the most frustrating thing musically I have ever attempted. I have tried for weeks to make this work, and it's enough to want to sell everything. A complete waste of time and money. No matter what I do, my keystep never stops droning. I can trigger notes. I can can get the filter and envelope to work. But that stupid keyboard will keep droning... forever. My setup SHOULD be easy: A nifty rack, key step, Behringer 110 and 140. Watched more videos I can stand. Read the manuals. Doesn't matter.
Frustrating for me too. Nearly all vids are aimed at people who understand this shit anyway. Nothing of the basics. Makes you wonder how people learned in the first place. I just wish there was a Modular club near me. Would learn tonns then.
Tough question but personally I'm going to go with Rhodes rolls. I think they put cocaine in those things because I end up eating like 30 of them at Thanksgiving.
I love the presenter in this video. He's entertaining, knowledgeable and rocks out.
Getting close to pulling the pin on one of these for my growing modular-type random set-up. This video has added to the plus points. Cheers.
I had no idea that you could use the mod strip as a 5v modulation destination. That's awesome
Pocket Operator Underwear with a real Spring Activated Reverb Pedal is my latest favorite BANG🔥🎵❗🙉💥🤙

this is a fantastic tip ! !
I didn't know this! Thank you for the tip!
Oh dang, it's our pal Wes!
Hope you had a good palentines day!
🙌
“The ins and outs” hah! This was really helpful, thank you!!
Nice explanation! Also great to see some Modbang cables here, thanks Wes!

Nice haircut Wes! Your pal, Jeff
Great video! Thank you so much. I’m definitely buying this controller for my Eurorack system!
Thank you for the thorough explanation!
man i should prolly start using my Keystep... and Zoom pedal. and synth and drum machine. somebody steal my Ableton!
Excellent info. Thanks!

Hope to see the softpop 2 showing up in more videos soon 👀
lots more on the way ;)

Thank you, i was able to play a song with a keystep37 and STO oscillator by MAKE NOISE.
Helpful but leaves me with more questions, the more you learn the more questions you should have. (Sorry wasn't going for sounding like yoda)
This is sick. You should invite four tet to your studio and do a video with him
Awesome video.... I love using a precision adder to bring down that high pitches form the keystep when using my modular. Disting MK 4 ftw.
Wes needs to do one on one lessons or teach a work class in Burbank. Sign me up!
this is a really good video! Thank you !
The SQ-1 will convert USB midi to CV as well. I bought a BeatStep Pro after the SQ-1 but I still find uses for it.
utilities like that can always find a second life! thats the joy of modular workflows! ;)
COULD YOU PLEASE DO ONE ON THE BEATSTEP PRO ASWELL?
Great video, thanks
Life is CV!!!
It's a good bit of kit.
Those CV make it sound very loud vs the presenter! :)
and now the other way around :) CV are weird!
Do bread sticks count as a bread type? Because that's the best bread.
Now I got something to mess around with after work. Never really touched the cv stuff on my keystep before (might have to get some longer cords).
Wes is the Bes!
now I kinda want a voltage controlled oyster.
Thanks for the video. I know the Arturia KS is the go to keyboard with CV for sure and it seems excellent. Wondering if there’s anything smaller though with similar CV (gate, pitch, mid) connections?
Also any thoughts on a module with similar functions to Maths but not so huge?
The 90's called; they want their supersaws back. 🤣
no way they're mine now ;)
Thanks 👍
My prophet x has a CV gate and I would like to know if it is possible to sequence it with a modular rig?
What brand is that multi effects dj station from?

I have an Express pedal yamaha fc7 but where is connected in cv: mod, gate or pitch?
Date & Walnut Sourdough😁
Could someone please help me understand if the Pam’s workout is doing anything at all in this particular patch? Thank you.
Actually where u connected the cv mod out on the modular?
Hi. What brand of Pedal Tuner is that?
Speaking of the MPC (One) what splitting cable do I need to split the CV signals from the back? Some sort of mini TRS? If you can put a link to the Perfect Circuit page, it would be helpful. Thanks for the great video. I hope you have more planned.
www.perfectcircuit.com/hosa-ymm-261.html good ol ymm-261 ;)

oh you're probably totally fine there :)
what do clock and trigger correspond to? I have some patch points on some instruments that sau clock or trigger instead of cv or gate....
Hey why do I need an di box. Do I need one with eurorack? Like.. I dunno.
That stuff confuses me. Do I need one if in plugging my eurorack into something like a mixer or monitors? Like wtf
we've got an article about line-level eurorack conversion over on signal - www.perfectcircuit.com/signal/eurorack-line-level
Floating ring cable? Got a link?
Please help ME how to
transpose korg seq arturia key
What is the tuner, please?
thats a korg Pitchblack tuner pedal!
challah
This is probably the cheapest way to get a 0-5V CV output I think. Is there any other?

not necessary. you should pick it back up and goa hard ;)

Just keep playing! After many moons you will wake up one day, fire up the rig and realise you understand all of a sudden
Tough question but personally I'm going to go with Rhodes rolls. I think they put cocaine in those things because I end up eating like 30 of them at Thanksgiving.
Talk properly
