  • What was Maggie, our autistic 9 year old, like when she was a baby and toddler? Today I share old home videos of her when she was tiny. I had almost forgotten how much she loved to sing!
Welcome to Someday I'll Sleep Autism Vlogs! We talk a lot about autism around here because as a family with three kids on the autism spectrum we believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. We also post family vlogs daily, about our lives. You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the city that Paul works in and where we have about a million therapy sessions each week.
We are a family of 7, with a Mom named Cammie and a Dad named Paul. Sadie is 11, Maggie is 9, Patrick is 7, James is 5, and Tessie is now 3!

Wow, I remember being that age :) So much of my world was pure sensory - intense details and patchwork colors. I remember spinning for hours and hours. I remember tracing everything with my eyes. And lying on the floor for most of the morning, watching flecks of dust scintillate as they wafted through thick beams of sunlight. It seems so long ago... it’s crazy that there was a time when I experienced things so vividly, without having any words for said experiences. It didn’t lessen the intensity or the beauty of things for me, though. Thanks for helping me remember! :) Maggie is adorable! :)

The videos of Maggie were so precious! She's absolutely beautiful and so smart. I love her singing of Twinkle Twinkle... most apparently, she's exactly herself then and today. Thank you for sharing your family with us --- they're all such beautiful souls.

The clip at 4:00 made me curious, how has your parenting style developed over time now having more information about her diagnosis and levels of understanding right and wrong?

That’s such a good question. Even making this video i was super uncomfortable a couple times because we have changed so much over the years. So yes, it’s definitely changed over the years and Tessie especially has benefited from what we learned along the way. I think that’s part of why she’s such a calm little kid even though she has a lot of sensory stuff going on.

The great majority of autistic people don’t view autism as a disease to be cured or even a disorder to be fixed, but see it simply as a ‘differently wired brain’, we call this neurodivergency. Autism does not exist as a seperate entity inside a person, like let’s say a tumor. You cannot remove the ‘autism’ from a child, because it is simply part of who they are. So I’m gonna go on a limb and say: we don’t want to be ‘cured’. Do we wish for a bit more support, understanding, acceptance, respect? Yes, but that’s it :)
