- This is a time lapse video of 7 days condensed to 8 minutes on a 41' boat the "Jubilee" as it voyages from Croton-Hudson NY to Wellesley Island in the St. Lawrence River. The route goes through the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario.
I like watching this kind of stuff because I work for the Erie Canal Corporation.
Do you know how I could get a boat to ride down the entire thing? I wanted to make my own yt video about this once I get older
@@RobertThePro I recommend calling calling dry docks in Lyons NY (just Google Dry docks Lyons NY it'll show you the number to call). The tourist boats as we call em are privately owned so I personally have no clue. But, they should know how to get ahold of em. Do it soon though as gasoline motors on the boats are no longer gonna be allowed to traverse the canals come either 2023-2025 if I remember correctly. Sorry I couldn't provide more info.
Millions were spent to enlarge the Erie Canal into what was named Barge Canal. However, rail shipping was becoming more popular and trucks took over in a few years as highways were improved. By the 1950's petroleum was the big item shipped by barge. A few years ago, the Genesee Brewing Co. of Rochester shipped some new tanks by barge. They just about cleared the bridges.
I lived in Brighton, just outside of Rochester - use to run the canal trail btwn Brighton and Pittsford NY. Was cool seeing boats going through the lock on that stretch of the canal. Thanks for sharing
I always wondered what it would be like to traverse the Erie Canal. The nuns (near Pittsburgh) taught us the Erie Canal song. Thanks for posting this.
You are more than welcome. It was a fascinating trip.
I wish I could take this trip. As a New Yorker I’m just learning about all of this stuff about the state. I’m ready to explore it and get away from the city.
I don't recognize much west of Utica, but I enjoyed watching the clouds as you crossed Oneida Lake. Interesting how many times you lock down going west. Great video.
For navigation we had paper charts as well as GPS electronic nav systems.
Awesome video. Its exactly what I've always wanted to see. Maybe someday I'll be able to take a trip like that. Nice.
It was an interesting trip, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
its looks scary dude, what if you fall?
Loved this! Brought back so many memories. We travelled with our sailboat (removed mast in Erie Canal) from Grosse Point, MI to Ft Myers, FL in 1974. Went through the Welland Canal from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, then through the Erie Canal (from Oswego) to the Hudson River. Just as beautiful as I recall. Do you know if there is a "drive the Erie Canal" roadway to retrace that route?
This was fantastic. I live in Manhattan, have a place outside of Syracuse by the old part of the canal, and a summer house in Wolfe Island, Ontario near Wellesley Island. But I never sailed the canal. This was familiar and not familiar at the same time.
I am glad that you enjoyed it. It was my first time in this part of the world. In 2013 I helped sail the next size up Diesel Duck, a 44’ versus 42’, from China to the U.S. across the Central Pacific. 87 days at sea and 5 months total. A little more extreme of an adventure.
This was absolutely fascinating!
Great video on an icon of engineering. Thanks for sharing.

The chronically wet lens ruined nearly half of this. By the way, for those reading this, they left the Erie Canal only about halfway through and went north through an entirely different canal- the Oswego Canal. So this video should be called Time Lapse trip through Part of Erie and All of Oswego Canal. (For the record there is also the Cayuga -Seneca Canal and the Champlain Canal)
How much do they charge for canal access and/or lock access? What's the canal access for boats ramps along the journey look like?
Thank you, your video filled in some much needed intel. Planning this trip for late June 2021 (if the plague permits) although journey's end will be in Clayton.
Thank you. I’m glad it provided you with some info to complete your trip. It was a bit of a challenge to keep the camera running the length of the trip.
@@rvrude Could you explain how you know which way to go, as you're traveling through the part that looks like river? Sometimes there are two choices, and you go left or right at the fork. Do you have the boat equivalent of GPS helping you out?
@@lfrankow yes. We had paper charts. As well as GPS Nav system.
Thanks for sharing this video Roger. We're planning to go from Lake Champlain to Rochester thru the Erie Canal and then cross Lake Ontario to the 1000 Islands next season and I'm trying to estimate the time it will take us at trawler speed and traveling an average of 4 hours a day. Seeing that Jubilee is a trawler, was your average speed around 7 knots? Cheers!
James Taddeo, yes, that was the top crushing speed. We started front Solomon Island in Maryland, went through the Delaware Canal, up the New Jersey Sea board, then up the Hudson River. The whole trip took about 2 weeks. In 2013 I helped bring a 46’ Sea House Diesel Duck from China to the U.S. across the Central Pacific. There were 4 of us in the crew and it took 5 months (87 days at sea). We stopped at every island group on the way. Safe sailing to you and enjoy your adventure.
@@rvrude Wow, what a trip that must have been. Thanks for your reply.
GREAT VIDEO!!!! Thx for sharing it.
Fantastic Video
Awesome video!
very cool!
While in the locks do you shut your engines off or let them idle? Is either mandatory?
Robert Bennett, no, we just put it in neutral and let it idle.
Robert Bennett I do not know if it mandatory to keep the engine running.
TY
Anyone 2022 ?
Do you pay a fee to go through the locks?
Stan, as I recall it was about $50 to go through the whole Erie Canal System.
Who else came here just because of the Suez Canal incident?
No, we docked at night.
Laissez-faire capitalism’s first great feat!
