Love how Martin's still directing Robert in this scene.
great comment
Excellent point.
Wow smart lol
The German dubbing is very good. "Was schreiben Sie da?"
Why would he not?
Little did Martin Scorsese know, the cameras where rolling.
Haha

He wasn't acting, Scorsese just asked deniro for a ride home
And he didn''t know the cameras were rolling. 🤣
It actually isn't his house, some black respectable person lives there

He does a great job of not just playing a broken guy, but someone trying to find human connection with a stranger.
Next level acting. A director who could act. A memorable scene, truly disturbing.
I got news for you... his acting sucked.
It fits perfectly to the scene and the character.
Not really disturbing.

Wait he was acting?
This guy makes Travis seem perfectly normal.
That's debatable! 😯
@@JTRocks1 Travis was perfectly normal given the society he was born into.
The one moment where Travis isn’t the most nutso in the room
Lol
Even Travis is creeped out by this guy. He's not responding to him at all.
That one shot at 3:50 showing the back of Travis’ head. It’s brilliant and unsettling. It really shows the tension Travis feels. There’s something so incredibly raw this film.
Vulnerability.
@JumpyCat717😂
Apparently that was De Niro’s idea to not have Travis turn around and look at Scorsese in the scene but rather look forward and look at him in the rear view mirror
My god It's so unsettling. Such a heavy sense of dread whenever I see that shot, like something sinister could happen at any moment.
He is honestly super creepy in this scene I never knew it was him! Amazing job truely intimidating

He's in another scene too, briefly, in front of the Palpatine campaign office. I don't think he's supposed to be the same character, though.

I always say this when I ask my lady anything and she doesn't reply right back lmao
That was the point he was being sarcastic
"Don't answer, you don't have to answer everything" what a great scene
Imagine Scorsese as a guest host on Jeopardy LOL
Personally, this was always my favorite scene in Taxi Driver. When I watched it for the first time, I had no idea it was Scorsese as the vengeful passenger. Not just a great director, but the man had some serious acting chops as well. That was a very underrated performance.

I swear, for any iconic scene from any movie, you will find someone on youtube that will tell you it's improvised
A lot of the time it’s true though… for instance, you know that scene in Avengers Infinity War where Thanos snaps his fingers and half of all life in the universe ceases to exist? 100% improvised on set by Josh Brolin.
This scene was actually improvised
everything starts with an idea improvised or not
@@shelbyvillerules9962fun fact, Brolin also did his own CGI for that scene
Schrader tells an awesome story about how he begged Marty to not act in this scene because it wouldn't work. It was one of Schrader's favorite scenes he wrote. So he really wanted it to be good.
There are very fun director cameos throughout cinematic history. But this is the best cameo *performance*, hands down. Chilling.
Agree. Many times directors cameos are set dressing, this is an entire performance. And its amazing even compared to every other amazing actor in this film

I can confidently say as an Uber driver this is what we go through every day.
Good
Is it?
Except uber drivers aren't taxi drivers because they don't have to have any knowledge of the city they work in, they could arrive there in any city for the first time ever and begin work that minute using Google maps. Kinda different to what a taxi driver is
As a passenger, I'm paying for the ride. You don't have to answer.
Idk… I kinda would love to take Mr Scorsese anywhere everyday
He’s fabulous in this scene.
I think he was going for more of a state of insanity rather than fabulous.
@@yauchy5965 He was indeed portraying a state of insanity, it’s called acting and it’s a fabulous job of it.

I like how Scorsesse doesn't even want Bickle to stop the meter, he just wants to sit in peace and conversation with someone, possibly for the last time before committing his act. He isn't 'preparing' himself for the crime, he accepts that this could be his last time to show his true self to anyone.
Such a great movie that the director himself is one of the best actors. An absolute monologue for the ages. Amazing
This is so Martin. The constant repeating himself, talking fast, answering his own questions.
I love how it’s left ambiguous as to if this was really happening or not, maybe it was just all in Travis’s mind or maybe there really was a guy in his cab feeling the same crazy impulses as Travis
It's definitely ambiguous.. but i tend to lean that the scene is manifesting Travis's racing thoughts .. I think Scorsese saying "I'm sick..right" .. and the shot of the back of Travis head points to this

Legend says that for this scene they just left the camera rolling between takes and let Scorsese do his thing
I’ve watched this movie 1000 times and just today I found out this is Scorsese 😂
Men, Martin Scorsese is actually a talented actor who has barely acted in the past 5 decades of his directing career, he played this dude in Taxi Driver, he played Vincent Van Goh in Dreams of Akira Kurosawa, and i remember that he even did terrific voice acting in "Sharks tale". I wonder why he doesnt act too much when he is a very talented actor who underuses his own talent that much.
Maybe it's too much work for him to act and direct at the same time
He does a cameo in Raging Bull as well. Prolly he does the cameos just to save up some bucks over having to pay extras. If only he had the ego of Tarantino who needs to insert himself in his movies, then we'd see more actor Marty lol
He also plays a small role in Quiz Shoe, and again does a good job.
Marty did a damn good job in this scene! That man completely lost his mind. Very chilling and frightening performance.
This is like in video games when you're talking to the main villain but you're playing as a silent protagonist.
It’s funny to think the beginning isn’t part of the script but Scorsese harshly directing DeNiro
Fun fact: Martin Scorsese is so short that, for the framing of this scene to work, he had to sit on folded-up blankets so his head would properly be in frame.
I kinda like to imagine this scene, with only Martin's eyes peeking over the seat. I think it'd be scarier, honestly.
😆
That second part is a WILD thing to type out. Thank you for doing so.
Okay because I was so lost on how I could barely see him when he called the taxi. I see his head before the car fully pulls up but he couldn't of been sitting and he didn't look like he got up either because he never came over the car but you can see him get in. Which makes even more sense cause looking at it from this context it did look like he started climbing onto something before the cut
Bro why did he look at the camera when he said that 🤣🤣🤣
Really cool camera work in this scene
Scorsese had no idea the cameras were rolling and later tried to downplay his comments as "locker room talk" 😂
I just realized the 44 magnum is the same gun Trevor ends up buying later in the movie
Travis*
Trevor a ha ah ha aha 😂😂
Scorsese was fantastic in this scene
I guess in this scene even Travis got scared or horrified by the passenger. He literally seems like a Psychopath.
"Hey, remember that conversation between Marty and De Niro? I bet we could just put this into the movie and it would work just fine!"
If my gf cheats on me I'm gonna end up like this guy 100% 😂
I love this scene because it's the only time that Travis meets someone who is more screwed up than he is.
This actually wasn't scripted. De Niro was giving Scorsese a lift, Scorsese just started rambling and the camera caught it all
😂😂
this is more than a cameo he is a whole character in the movie
Dennis Hopper vibes.
He also had a non speaking cameo. Loved this movie. Intense De Niro.
@austynjordan4717Uh, what? Jack, Al and Robert are roughly from the same generation. Jack's not THAT old.
@ajordan2323 Torch passing would mean Nicholson's era was over. He had the Shining 4 years after this. He's only 3 years older than Pacino. Brando, I understand.
Imagine a director who acts in his own movies. Wouldn't that be a sight?
imagine a king who fights his own battles ;p;
Clint Eastwood did act in the movies he directed himself.
Great director
And to answer his question in this scene - multiple times - yes, we think he's sick
Scary performance by Martin Scorsese, most actors could never be this good 👍
This is one of my favourite scenes in this movie; firstly it clearly demonstrates Scorsese's skill at acting even though he isn't a trained actor. However the script is very good, but what does it for me is the way Scorsese says to Travis "Now THAT you should see, what a .44 Magnum can do to a woman's pu%%y", it's not what he says, it's the way he delivers it by over-emphasising the word 'THAT'.
yes you can imagine him hating blacks naturally as he's SO FREAKING good at it, so natural.
Italians hated blacks a lot when this movie came out. This, and Rocky.
Now that you should see.

Even then the reality was grim
@@m1lst3r89 Now I want to see!
He was really insistent on paying more money for his cab ride. What a kind and generous man.
Travis wasn't gonna charge him for not going anywhere. Not many folks like that nowadays.
I think the idea was he was either gonna die or go away for a long time so he felt the money didn't matter. I believe it's supposed to mirror travis later leaving his money for iris to go back to her family before he did what he did
Still one of the edgiest scenes in cinema. Never loses its edge.
Robert De Niro's wife at the time was a black woman. She's the woman at the candy shop in the adult theater. I want to know what Robert De Niro thought during all of this

Marty rocked a great full beard back in the 70s.
His usual big brows are right on show also.
talk about a juicy taxi cab confession
This is a speaking part for Scorsese, but not his only part in the film. When they are panning the camera following Betsy, you can see him sitting with his arm in front of his face outside the Palantine political office when Travis is out front and first sees Betsy going into the office.😮😮😮😮😮
Uber driver gonna be Martin's last and best creation! I did heard some rumours of that project, it's gonna be wild!
My favorite scene in the movie
This is not Scorsese's only cameo in Taxi Driver.... He also appears in the background sitting on a stoop in Cybil Shepherd's first scene....
Knew this was Scorsese from day one of seeing this movie. Good scene. Love how he only showed the woman’s silhouette. Behind the curtain. But you can tell she was attractive.
Probably the most deepest and darkest scenes in history..
this has to be the most brilliant 4 minutes of a movie.
4 minutes but goes by so fast. too good

Love the music in this scene.
His behavior is justifiably accountable for.
I’m pretty sure this encounter is the reason Travis bought a.44 magnum, it came highly recommended lol
Yes hahaha
This movie is much older then me what a classic
It must be a touch of ttragicomic for an actor knowing having made his best movie 50 years ago.
Today this guy would be kicked out of the Uber and called a total Karen.
I’m a movie that is shocking and jarring and fast-paced and gut-wrenching as Taxi Driver, this scene stops the show. Unbelievably brutal. And quiet. It’s just one man talking, almost whispering.
Spectacular scene.
We need a transcript of this whole scene; it's brilliant 📽️
What a great cameo
He should have done a follow up movie about this guy.
"whutaru,, blind?" millisecond hesitation between' u & blind ' for effect. haha
The music too is heavy and foreboding.
It's not music made for just the scene though, it flows through the whole latter half of the film as things get darker, the foreboding isn't about what the passenger will do but what will become of Bickle
Coked out of his mind. Look at his eyes lol, my favorite director!
Marty just being himself !
Happy 80th birthday, you beautiful creep.

There is one question that has always been on my mind regarding this scene. What was the passenger really upset about? Was it that his wife was having an affair or having an affair with a black man?
Both. Obviously.
