      @Ryan Rafter not as dramatically reduced as it seems. The extra distance is because almost the same butane is being shot out at a higher speed because it has to go through a smaller space before it gets to the distance for the right mix with oxygen to sustain its ignition.
      Note the difference in color; it's a smaller but higher energy flame now. Before it was a bigger lower energy flame.

"To Nerf" has been a gamer term for a while meaning to lessen or completely remove something's effectiveness (in those cases, reducing one or more of a playable character or object's abilities with the introduction of something else; or an outright change to the character or object that lowers or removes an ability).
      I always figured it correlated with a Nerf gun being a toy gun hence not destructive.

    Can't decide what I like best about this guys videos; the original content, the clear demonstration and explanation of the subject, or the sometimes bonus observations he makes about the subject. In this case the plasma settling at the point where the laminar flow turns turbulent. Gives ya food for thought. I wonder if the flame causes turbulence by generating heat. Or does the inevitable turbulence cause the air/fuel conditions for the flame to occur?
    See? food for thought. Awesome video as usual. Getting BETTER over time!

    • @DavidTJames-yq9dr
      @DavidTJames-yq9dr 4 года назад +2

      @@jeffo9396 it is all in the presentation. I wonder if you can add multiple flame sources, and play with the angles to create an effect that does not look like a party trick. Also fuel sources that alternate or move thru a spectrum could add some flare (punny) and colour to the illusion. I think I will try this for my weekend side project. The remaining portion would be how it is presented to the audience. A bit of stage-show and abracadabra - Magic.... SCIENCE!!

    • @jeffo9396
      @jeffo9396 4 года назад +2

      @@DavidTJames-yq9dr If the presentation is done cleverly and properly, then it certainly has the potential to fool P&T. It just wouldn't fool them if you show them a floating flame and they know that it's a floating flame.
      Someone did a levitation trick on P&T's Fool Us a few years back, and they actually got fooled. I remember Penn saying something like, "There's only so many ways that you can levitate an object"... yet, the way that the performer did the trick was unique to them, so it fooled them. So yes, if a basic trick is performed in a clever enough way, then the end result would be very impressive and appear to be like a brand-new trick.

    Awesome, but you didn't explain the most interesting question. Why does the flame keep burning after you take the lighter away, and how long does it continue burning for? I assume it keeps burning because there is a residual upward laminar flow of butane after you close the lighter valve which will feed the flame until the gas runs out? I can't see any other explanation. I assume it will burn for around 20 seconds or so judging by what I saw on the video, but I imagine you get maximum flame burn time by getting gas flow speed at maximum possible?
    I'm gonna have to try this at home...🤔

    You should try experimenting with hot ice! Sorry if you have already done this though.

    Hi Mrs Action Lab , it would be intresting to know how much is the reflective power of the best reflective surface, measuring the increase of temperature under a most power light beam...may you do this experiment?

    Suggestion:
    when the flame is floating it is rather unstable i.e. it extinguisher rather easily. at some distance to the flame try clapping your hand hard but make sure you dont blow it out by the gust you are creating. the hard clapping sound alone should extinguish the flame.
    I came across this phenomenon a long time ago during my childhood when I was playing around with some sort of Bunsen burner after I've romoved the top part of it.
    Have fun!

    I have a suggestion that may be good. Please do a video on artificial gravity or anti gravity. Like what you see in sci fi movies on rotating ships or any space ship. Watched a Vsauce video made me think of it. Thanks!

    This is actually helpful to me, because it is lunar new year from where im from and me and my relatives are celebrating it, we get to play with fireworks, fire crackers and such. And one common issue i encounter is that the flame burning from the string of said explosive can burn my fingers. So if i can extend the distance of the flame, this would fix my problem, thanks action lab

    My parents were heavy smokers. The only good thing that this provided me was the ability to experiment with butane. From freezing and reanimating ants to finding the correct stoichiometry to create a snapbang to scare my friends. I love being an old nerd!

    You should point out that people need to use *BALLPOINT* pen ink.
    If they just search “pen ink” they’re gonna find a lot of fountain pen ink which has a near water viscosity unlike ballpoint ink.

    It would be interesting to see how the flame reacts to the presence of an electrostatic field. Another video perhaps?
