I can't believe how they nerfed billions and trillions of lighters.
This high flame looks way cooler!
I've done this experiment when i was younger
Never heard of "nerfed" as a verb hahaha!!! Learn something everyday!
@Ryan Rafter not as dramatically reduced as it seems. The extra distance is because almost the same butane is being shot out at a higher speed because it has to go through a smaller space before it gets to the distance for the right mix with oxygen to sustain its ignition.
Note the difference in color; it's a smaller but higher energy flame now. Before it was a bigger lower energy flame.
@@888edu4U yup. "To Nerf" has been a gamer term for a while meaning to lessen or completely remove something's effectiveness (in those cases, reducing one or more of a playable character or object's abilities with the introduction of something else; or an outright change to the character or object that lowers or removes an ability).
I always figured it correlated with a Nerf gun being a toy gun hence not destructive.

I took your advice about not trying this at home. So I went to a friend's house.
Magicians watching this: “Here’s an idea to fool Penn and Teller!”
Penn and Teller get fooled more than they should, but I doubt a cocktail party trick involving a lighter would fool them. lol
@@jeffo9396 it is all in the presentation. I wonder if you can add multiple flame sources, and play with the angles to create an effect that does not look like a party trick. Also fuel sources that alternate or move thru a spectrum could add some flare (punny) and colour to the illusion. I think I will try this for my weekend side project. The remaining portion would be how it is presented to the audience. A bit of stage-show and abracadabra - Magic.... SCIENCE!!
@@DavidTJames-yq9dr If the presentation is done cleverly and properly, then it certainly has the potential to fool P&T. It just wouldn't fool them if you show them a floating flame and they know that it's a floating flame.
Someone did a levitation trick on P&T's Fool Us a few years back, and they actually got fooled. I remember Penn saying something like, "There's only so many ways that you can levitate an object"... yet, the way that the performer did the trick was unique to them, so it fooled them. So yes, if a basic trick is performed in a clever enough way, then the end result would be very impressive and appear to be like a brand-new trick.
@@jeffo9396 i am def not that clever, but I am gonna google that P&T episode and see if I can dissect the presentation layer. Thanks!
Methanol is fun for magic too it’s an invisible flame. You can light it on fire in the middle of a room then place a piece of balled up paper or something down on it then pretend like you’re lighting it on fire with your hand or mind.
"Dont try this at home" stfu this is gonna be my new candle
2:44 idk why that transition had me dying 💀😂
Can't decide what I like best about this guys videos; the original content, the clear demonstration and explanation of the subject, or the sometimes bonus observations he makes about the subject. In this case the plasma settling at the point where the laminar flow turns turbulent. Gives ya food for thought. I wonder if the flame causes turbulence by generating heat. Or does the inevitable turbulence cause the air/fuel conditions for the flame to occur?
See? food for thought. Awesome video as usual. Getting BETTER over time!
This is the coolest lighter trick I've ever seen.
I successfully recreate it. Now its time to show my friends the properway to light up cigs. 💀

Me: *showing this to my teachers at school*
Teachers: You got A+ for every subject
That is crazy. This can be used for the future!!
You can also lift, turn, lower and turn again.. the flame adjustment ring and move it several times to increase the amount of gas coming out...
You get the same effect without using ink and having it spit it everywhere.
Been doing that since the 80s... lol

The ones who heeded the warning were amused for five minutes.
The ones who ignored the warning were lit on fire.

This is actually helpful to me, because it is lunar new year from where im from and me and my relatives are celebrating it, we get to play with fireworks, fire crackers and such. And one common issue i encounter is that the flame burning from the string of said explosive can burn my fingers. So if i can extend the distance of the flame, this would fix my problem, thanks action lab
Great Thumbnail.
Great scientist !
My parents were heavy smokers. The only good thing that this provided me was the ability to experiment with butane. From freezing and reanimating ants to finding the correct stoichiometry to create a snapbang to scare my friends. I love being an old nerd!

Thanks bro...needs a little bit of practice but it's working, thanks to science. I end up with a lot of ink on my hands while trying to "clone" your experiment 😂. It's looking really beautiful in the night time...wait for the night, turn off your lights in the room and then power on this experiment....it will look like a little flame in the middle of your room, you won't see your hand or your body or the surroundings...you'll just see this little flame floating in the dark...thanks again
Your videos are great! Informative and entertaining. Thank You!
Question is, how do you put it out? By water, like usual, or what?
im gona do this for my project
Suggestion:
when the flame is floating it is rather unstable i.e. it extinguisher rather easily. at some distance to the flame try clapping your hand hard but make sure you dont blow it out by the gust you are creating. the hard clapping sound alone should extinguish the flame.
I came across this phenomenon a long time ago during my childhood when I was playing around with some sort of Bunsen burner after I've romoved the top part of it.
Have fun!
Action lab = fire nation
The last firebender
Thank you for the work you’ve done impeccable ^^
That shirt.. perfect 😂
The flame doesn't extinguish because there's "too much oxygen", it extinguishes because all butane has burned up (either fully or partially)
omg
you’re so cool dude

when I saw the title I thought I remember doing this stuff as a kid I wonder if its the same thing or something different then I saw the lighter behind the box
Edit we just increased the fuel delivered by taking the back off and moving the flame adjuster to max picking it up and moving it back to low and moving back to high again.
Oh man I know exactly what ur talking about. I used to do that as a giggle with cheap lighters all the time. make HUGE flames lol.
We used to call them crack lighters.
Blazed Gaming KR I did that too! My mom said it was broken when we turned her lighter all the way up all the time and she got a non-cheap one. Kind of sad.

Ok everybody, today we're going to summon a flame out of nothing.

That was pretty cool. Not quantum locking superconductor cool but pretty cool none-the-less

This was happening with my forge burner a couple weeks ago. The flame moved away from the burner (at the top of my forge) and I could still see it burning against the bottom for a little but before it blew itself out. I had to clean out some parts and adjust the nozzle.
Very cool! I remember when I was a kid I tried this experiment and I probably found it on some kids science-fun-tricks book that I bought from a school book-fair or something :p
I really love the action lab because I learn a lot even in the quarantine.
He deserves a lot more subs
One step (or many)to fire bending just make a variable nozzle to control the velocity and more far the flame is.cool
