    I started a colony with a single mourning gecko. They actually don’t need to pseudo copulate at all. Pseudo copulation occurs when there are two or more mourning geckos in one enclosure. This is actually to help them sync up egg laying. Often times a colony of mourning geckos will reproduce around the same time because of that. Otherwise it’s simply a ritual left behind when there were males in their species many years ago.
    I don’t recommend having only a single gecko only because colony species function much better in groups. (Pecking order, etc) But they absolutely do NOT need other geckos in order to produce viable eggs. The whole point of parthenogenesis is that they can essentially make clones of themselves in environments where they are otherwise unpopulated.

      To my understanding the psudo copulation only helps trigger it. They can but there is no guarantee that they will reproduce on their own. You should always have at least 3 because they are a social species anyway

    I've got 2 of these girls. They came to me at the beginning of the Covid19 lockdown.
    They hopped a crossing to the UK in packs of Indian paving slabs. Both got stuck in quarantine at border for 2 weeks. They were really slow. Highly dehydrated and I didn't hold much hope. The tail came off one. I've never kept lizards or anything exotic. The guy from the local exotic shop saw a fb post, I put on and he Brought me a ex shop enclosure, same as yours really, and all the equipment. He set it up for me too. You exotic guys are fab.
    My enclosure however has got 'man made' holes in the top, hence why he gave me it. Anyway 1 year on and I've got eggs. So glad I listened to you. Off to cover these small holes. Only 1 has layed. But it's the big one out of the 2. I don't think the other one has reached maturity?

    Great video mate! Just a minor correction. You can breed just one mourning gecko. I have one and she produced six eggs in her first year, four of which are now adult specimens :)

      @kanyenorth5711 4 года назад +1

      i think he means that, if you have 2 or 3, each gecko will produce more than if they were kept alone

    • @jaxona3544
      @jaxona3544 3 года назад +3

      That’s lucky, often times one will never produce eggs because the geckos pretend to mate, which sets off the process of making eggs

    • @your_local_reptile6700
      @your_local_reptile6700 3 года назад +2

      @@jaxona3544 No this is only if you have multiple, they're parthenogenesis. They can absolutely breed on there own and its not down to luck. If they was to find them selves on a island without other mourning geckos they can still lay eggs perfectly fine. The ritual helps them sync up laying eggs and is a left over relic from when there was more males but it isn't needed. Its just a part of the hierarchy they establish

    Thanks for taking the time to make this. Very informative! I think these little geckos are amazing and I love that they're a colony lizard. Question: Is a mister on its own fine? I read it also keeps the humidity up but would like to confirm this. Also, how do you keep the heat up overnight? Do you have pad heating below or do you let the temp drop? My house drops to 20c overnight. Is that too cool? I'm in the process of researching everything about these gals when I came across your video which has answered a lot of my questions. :-)

    What do you think about keeping single geckos? I wouldn't want it to be lonely but I don't want to get overrun lol. I would be keeping them/it in a 8x8x12 exo Terra just over 5 gallons.
    Thanks 😀

    • @loremipsum303
      @loremipsum303 Год назад +1

      They are communal and will not thrive without company, but that doesn’t really matter because they will lay eggs perfectly fine even without a roommate to faux-mate with. So they kind of just make their own friends.

    U have light and heat above the big tank but what about the babies in the jar ?

    • @marzipanmango
      @marzipanmango Год назад +1

      As long as your room temp is around 22-25°C they should be ok. My apartment is on the cold side (18 or 19°C) so I have a mini UV light that heats the baby's enclosure that's on during the day. I keep a close eye on the temperature in their enclosure since it's so small. You never want the temp to go above 28°C.
      You don't need UVB light for them if you supplement with D3.
      You could also use a space heater to bring the temp up in the room a bit. Or a heat mat with a temperature controller.
