When I was younger my facial hair was patchy and useless, so I shaved. As to haircuts, get one before you start, and unless it's a very long one, get another when you're home.
Nowadays I don't mind long hair and a beard up to a fairly generous point, but I do pack a pair of scissors to trim the beard when needed, tidy up my fringe, and so on -- but that was from last time being on it for 8 months, so it was necessary to a degree.
LOL. You tend to do 'long' Caminos Julian! For us mre mortals, you are right. A cut before you start and one at the end should be enough 🙂
Good advice! I had my hair cut right before leaving for the Camino. I also went to a barber shop in León to get a very nice shave, about two weeks in on the Camino. Only 11 € for 45 minutes professional treatment. So worth it!
👌👍🔝💯
I found a great one in Leon too, on my first Camino. Just on the way into the city, right on the Camino.
Generally, Pilgrims don't worry too much about personal appearance. But personal hygiene....Yes 🙂
I've been retired since before my first Camino. Growing a beard is part of my training - no shaving for a couple of months before a Camino. I do take a disposable razor (but not cream or soap). By the end of Camino I look pretty untidy.¡Buen Camino!
But do you feel more Pilgrim like? 😉
I have a beard which I keep trimmed, except when I am on Camino. I let it grow long before I go so I look like Father Christmas by the time I get home. The household management doesn’t like long beards so I am back to normal within the week. I do get a haircut before I go and never think about it after that. Looking like a homeless person is part of the fun.
I agree. A beard and long hair kind of fits my mental picture of a Pilgrim.
I can't get past 2 days stubble without it driving me nuts. On Camino Frances now. Took the lightest razor I could find and a packet of sea to summit trek and travel pocket shaving soap. Gets me by fine. In Burgos for a couple of days rest and will hit a barber shop tomorrow to get a hair cut.
Sounds like a plan. Yes, the first few days can be itchy....
When I was in Honduras I could get a hot towel straight razor shave. I was hoping I could get some on the Camino.
Maybe you can! Worth a look.
Rob--thanks so much--the answers just keep coming! You are right--I won't worry about it. Maybe a haircut toward the end but I'll let the beard go. I am used to getting haircuts in Spanish from my Peace Corps service--and I always like having a goatee during backpack trips.
Sounds like a plan..........
Not everyone has as decent a beard. Otherwise liberating, found that out during the pandemic.
LOL. Yes I know what you mean. I wasn't sure if i Could grow one at first!
Let the judges come out. I’m taking a very small battery operated beard trimmer. Weighs about 4 oz.
Sure...why not. Let us know if you carried it all the way :-)
@@robscamino well, my entire pack weighs 11 pounds including water. So, I’m sure I’ll be fine. Thanks
@@Peoriahiker wow. Well done!
I can't imagine you without a beard.
Nor can I now! Not a pretty site…..😀
Always great videos from you, Rob.
Some interesting questions recently 🙂
How often does one get a haircut? I am a "every six weeks" kinda guy....that should cover the majority of the Camino experience for the vast majority of people.
Me too. It's more the shaving thing. I stopped shaving 9 years ago on my first Camino...
Taking an electric shaver is just more weight - so two Camino beards have been grown!! Haircuts … nah…
100% 🙂
