Branch line railroading: Mass Coastal on the Watuppa Line - 6/26/2024

In this video we follow Mass Coastal MC-4 on the Watuppa Branch between New Bedford and Westport, MA. Mass Coastal took over the Watuppa Branch from Bay Colony in December 2023 and has started to rehabilitate the old track, even if it doesn't look like it in this video. We start off in New Bedford and see single GP9U 2007 head "south" (really west) to Mid City Scrap. I broke off at Shawmut Ave. but returned for the northbound trip at Westport Factory. From there we follow the train to Dartmouth Building Supply then onto New Bedford and Myricks Junction in Berkley.
Note the overgrown track conditions that give the line a true branch line feel. Hopefully after upgrades these scenes will be a thing of the past but for now it is cool to see an old GP9 fighting the brush and tall grass along the route.

Hixville section needs some TLC. I thought only the Maumee and western could run on such awful tracks...

It's a really Shame that they won't use a Tamper on the joints on the tracks and raise the joints and they can have level Rail then it wouldn't take as long to do the job and they might be able to get more Rail work.

Looks like that dude was already at the crossing - rather than a conductor.

These crossings are all new and I’d be my guess that they still have some kinks to work out so it’s safer to have someone flag the crossing instead of risking it

I get periodic updates from MBTA and Fall River and New Bedford signal work is on-going.

For the crossing at 5:19, they may have been installed, but not wired/activated, given as they did not go off.
