Mixed Group Diving at Osezaki, Japan, 28MAY23

This was a weekend dive trip to Osezaki, located on the western side of the Izu Peninsula, in Shizuoka, Japan, conducted with a mixed group of friends who range in certification levels from Recreational Open-Circuit to Technical Closed-Circuit, and a variety in between
Dives were conducted both 27 and 28 May, 2023.
During the dives on the 28th of May, a nearly 2m long Common Shovelnose Ray was spotted by AJ Powell, and filmed. These rays are listed as a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES of fish in the Rhinobatidae family. They are found primarily in the central Indo-Pacific, with a range from Japan to Australia, mostly in shallow coastal waters, at depths of 100m, but sometimes much shallower.
What is absolutely INFURIATING, is that Japanese fishermen (including in places like Atami) will STILL fish these rays by the crate load, most often catching juveniles less than 1m long, with zero regard for the conservation status of these fish, selling them in the markets.
