Which Games Deserve Remakes?

  • In today's episode I talk about remakes and what criteria should make a game eligible for one. Most of the time it just depends on which old games are popular but in an ideal world I'd like to see games with major issues be first up to bat. So with these criteria which game is most deserving of a remake? Well that's what the video's for dumb dumb. Special thanks to ‪@PlayertoBeNamedLater‬ for making the thumbnail!

3:15 As a left-handed, I hate whenever this is being done, that's why I love how in games such as Severed they solved it by making it so both the dpad and the abxy (is that the name?) buttons worked the exact samefor movement and some commands.

If I recall, there actually is a left-handed option for this game... though it requires buying an accessory/add-on.
(It may also be possible with a later model of 3DS, but it would probably be more of a hassle, for different reasons.)

In the Golden Sun and Mother communities you often see people thinking of remakes for the best games, which is dumb because they did age really well besides the compressed music, and I always end up suggesting, you know, the black sheep of those series, Golden Sun Dark Dawn and Mother 1, both needing great rebalances, polishing the graphics, an GSDD needs an overhaul of the story to make it actually decent and cohesive with a proper ending (as long as they don't change Sveta, best character in the series)

    • @SlightlyInDepthGaming
      @SlightlyInDepthGaming  Год назад +2

As a big mother fan I always though that an Earthbound remake wouldn't make sense. I could see it going either way between Mother 3 and 1. 1 is lowkey not gameplay wise and is in need of a graphical overhaul. Mother 3 is one of the greatest games of all time and its a shame that it's locked to Japan. Remaking Earthbound would just remove minor issues compared to the sweeping changes the other 2 would get

6:32 - I believe it was the localizers intention to have everyone else in that time speak like that as well,
the only reason it ended up like that was just a lack of time. So Frog was left as the odd one out.
While on the DS version, I think the same thing happened, since they wanted to keep everyone uniform.
"Plans to have everyone in that age speak in 'ye olde english', but due to lack of time just defaulted to 'normal english'."
Honestly, that's one of the big reasons games from the 80's/90's ended up how they are.
Back then I think most games were lucky to have 1, _maybe_ 2 months to translate this stuff.
(If I recall, Mario RPG & Chrono Trigger may have been done with just 1 month back then.)
Anything with a lot of text being translated would run into technical issues back then too.
On a smaller scale, you'd have to fit dialogue within the same window the original did,
not being able to add new windows if your message went beyond that, for example.
You may have also been unlucky and gotten stuck with a really weird or 'cramped' font.
So, while it may have worked fine for Japanese letters, English letters would take up
more screen area than they needed and you'd barely be able to fit 1-2 sentences in there.
On an overall scale, the cartridges back then, more often that not, just wouldn't have enough
storage space to hold a fully translated script, even if the above mentioned things weren't an issue.
Which often led to huge chunks of scripts being cut entirely, and other parts being shortened.
They may have also lacked context and were simply given lines to translate without knowing where it goes.
So without any good tools or time to test them, it's honestly a miracle most games were as coherent as they were back then.

i think its important to also consider the bussesness side
like Paper Mario TTYD getting remade is "deserved" because its a good (and cheap) way to see if the original style is still appealing to a large enough audiance that could make sequels worth it

The game I always say as the on I want remade is Drakengard 1. A weird but interesting story with absolutely terrible gameplay and PS2 graphics but somehow led to one of the most regarded games of NieR Automata. And I mean that game let the original NieR be remastered so I have hopes that Drakengard 1 can be remade with better mechanics and a more experienced Yoko Taro would lead to the game it should have been

The main reason for Kid Icarus Uprising not getting a Switch remake/remaster is probably because the team that made it disbanded immediately after completing it, so Nintendo would need to find an external team to do it, which is unlikely since I don't think it's that high of a priority, but who knows recently they're really into 3ds remasters

On my top 10 list of favorite games, I prefer the originals to their remakes, not out of nostalgia, as I've only known them relatively recently:
    - RE2 (1998): The fixed camera... well okay I'm using a patch for the tank controls, the fault of RE1's (2002) accessibility option.
    - RE4 (2005): The fixed shot, the positioning, the Tetris case. Ashley never really bothered me. What's the point of having HD graphics in the dark? The overplayed B-movie aspect that plays with JV codes has more charm.
    - Kirby's Adventure : Do you really prefer the drooling backgrounds of a GBA to the saturated colors of an NES exploited to its full potential?
    - Warrio's Wood (NES) : The SNES remake certainly offers shortcuts for certain maneuvers, and you can finally reposition the diamonds to clear the board. But acquiring credits is far more tedious, and the AI in Versus mode is even more aggressive than that of Mortal Kombat 2!
    - Donkey Kong 94 (GB): Why remake a GBA remake on Switch (DK vs M) when the original is more challenging and rhythmic?

To me a game should be remade if the original product is nothing like how the creator envisioned it and if the original game would be considered by people to be a better product had it included the othose ideas like how the remakes of Banjo Kazooie and Tooie actually included stopnswop feature even if it was kinda dissapointing

    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (N64)
    Mischief Makers (N64)
    Zelda 2 (NES)
    Castlevania 2 (NES)
Just some games I think deserve a remake. Zelda 2 and Castlevania 2 need remakes for pretty obvious reasons at this point, but Goemon and Mischief Makers need a remake for different reasons.
Goemon and Mischief Makers are both games that are pretty much trapped on the N64, both look pretty fucking ugly at this point and both are relatively obscure.
I will say that they are both really fun games, but they both have some issues. Goemon is a 3D open world game, but the world is so bland and lifeless that traversing the world gets really boring pretty quickly. It's script is pretty strange because it was written with a lot of Japanese exclusive humor and gags that a lot of times don't really land well when translated to English.
Mischief Makers is a strange one, it's first major issue is the way it controls, it takes a while to get used to the way the game controls, you use the D-pad to move around (no stick support at all) and you use the C buttons to dash in each direction, but it kind of just feels weird to do at first, I just can't put my finger on why exactly. The game is also pretty short and some of the levels kind of suck, but it really has the potential to shine and I think a full on remake with added levels could do it some justice.

You picked the wrong Castlevania. Any of the DS ones would be good because it would be nice to play them as a single screen experience on a console or PC (without emulation). And that's possible since Konami recently released a GBA collection, you know they want to do the same for the DS games but they can't just port it due to their dual screen functionality making that tricky. Even Simon's Quest could use a remake to jazz up the gameplay and fix the cryptic clues in the english version.

I was gonna pick another castlevania (I've been replaying all of the metroidvania ones) but in the end they've all aged much better than Harmony. In particular having the map on the second screen is a great feature and honestly makes the DS castlevanias the smoothest experience to play. Wouldn't mind Ecclessia getting a bit of a better story or Dawn of Sorrow ditching the anime art style tho
