- Beryl hit the coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm with high winds and waves. It caused major flooding as it moved inland as a tropical storm. Strong wind gusts caused trees to fall and knocked out power for more than a million people. NBC News' Kathy Park and Bill Karins report.

My thoughts too, because here in Jamaica we do concrete house and we were hit by category 4 and our damage was not as great as Texas, this is really great damage for a category 1.

😢 unfortunately Texas power line infrastructure is from the 1950s. they’re in the process of redoing all of it and having natural gas facilities as backups in the coming years.
I believe that this is our opportunity to invest into building stronger structures. And being prepare sooner. Please don't take Mother Nature for granted. It's not a game. Loss of life is not a joke.🥺wishing all the best going forward.

Cat 1 has quite the bite, but you weathermen barked it was Cat 5. Like every other time. Don't like to see the damage and loss of life, but it's called Hurricane Alley for good reason. Hope you recover quickly.
wow this is a storm that wont stop!
katrina did most of its damage and destruction when it was a category 1-2 hurricane and losing strength over new orleans. it had weakened significantly by the time it reached the southern part of the city, where most of hte fatalities occured. there were hardly any hurricane force winds recorded in the city. that didn't matter. the levees broke and the city flooded with 10-20 feet of storm surge. basically the wind pushed 10-20 feet of additional water into the city on top of the typical lunar tide. the remnants of these hurricanes can drop 5-10 inches of rain in a day.
So which areas has the most water damage. North Houston, spring branch, sw houston... and?

comparing the Damage in the USA and the Caribbean tells me we need to raise USA building standards. the caribbean got CAT 4 and 5 texas Cat 1 and the damage is worse
Tbf, Beryl was intensifying as it made landfall and intensifying storms can pack a stronger punch than storms that are "stonger" but weakening or maintaining strength up to landfall. The storm was also very impressive structurally for just a CAT 1 as well with a clear defined eye and eyewall at landfall.
Roofs should not be being lost in a cat 2 its just that.
