The "interview" reminds me very much of a certain group of questing intellectuals I was around as a teenager, they were much older and very much of a 60's mindset. A kind of searching, completely removed from the everyday concerns of ordinary people. Syd here, makes complete sense as he responds eloquently to issues of conditioning in art. Relatable.
His legacy of beauty is unique. Hello Ian, Jennifer. Iggy xx

The solo records sessions...he sounds much more coherent than I imagined, if a bit sedated. As another poster wrote, this is not 1967 as stated. It is mid-1968, which was a particular low point. He was in a better, though still up and down place, in 1969 and 1970, as the solo stuff was recorded. I suspect a very bad place in the next 15 years. Hopefully he had some peace and tranquility in the final 20 years of his life.

Syd Barett was a talented, gifted young man. He founded Pink Floyd at the age of 19. He was kicked out at the age of 22. He made two solo albums and wrote 52 songs. A sad story. He failed as a painter and musician. I never understood why he never went to therapy in the 70s, 80s or 90s. Drugs ruin your life. A burden for Syd and his family. Syd Barett could have become something.

He achieved a lot as musician, and died as millionaire. Doesn't sound like a failure to me.
What happened to him had multiple caused and also happens with stuff like ADHD medication. His behavior was irresponsible, but blaming the substances is pretty short sighted. Most users never face that kind of problems.

His catalogue has never been out of print in nearly 60 years, he had around 3mil in his bank account when he passed away and his art has consistently been praised both by the public and academically. So, where is the failure???
Syd Barrett lived exactly how he wanted on his own terms, he made what he wanted to make and stopped when he didn't want to do it anymore. He spent the rest of his life painting and pursuing other hobbies that interested him, he was comfortable and, according to his family, he was very contented for the last 20+ years of his life. So there's no need to project your personal conceptions of what is and is not "successful" onto him.
