I really like your values and am really heartened to hear them from a church. Kudos. I'm a secular humanist because I am not convinced any gods exist. Power to you though.

Elementary material from those who had an epiphany of some sort and now think their view is the end all be all.
Religion and every belief in a nutshell.

At our church, we don't think our "view is the end all be all." Instead, we are working together as a community to appreciate the beauty and truth found in all religions (including atheism). After spending 15 years in ministry, I have found several other faith communities who are striving toward the same goal.
While there are definitely communities who exist who believe they are "the end all be all," I want you to know there are several communities who do not feel this way.

@@ParadoxChurchRedlands Atheism is not a religion. Religion requires faith; faith is belief without evidence. Atheism is lack of belief.
I forget who said it, but it goes something like this: the label "atheist" only exists because people make up stories about gods. If people didn't make up those stories, then there would be no need for that label to exist.

@@kensheck2049 That's a fair point, I share the same understanding of atheism as you do. This is why I said "...all religions (including atheism)" because I know it's not typically considered a religion.
However, upon further reflection, I can see how someone would misconstrue that I understood atheism to be a religion based on my comment above. I'll try to watch that going forward.
      Thanks for the feedback!

It's great to see religious people adopt an inclusive view of the world, but I just cannot see how you can reconcile all the violence and appalling and contradictory stuff of the bible with your worlds view. I mean, at what point just making stuff up is better than trying to use such a disturbing collection of fiction. Have you guys considered taking a look at atheism? If not, why? There's plenty of love, empathy and personal growth in humanism too. Anyway, I do not mean this comment as an attack. I wish good people (like you seem to be) all the best.

Hi there! Thanks so much for commenting. I am appalled and disturbed by the violence in the Bible as well. As far as the contradictions, I did my doctoral project on Biblical Contradictions. I did not do this to "prove" that we can still trust the Bible even with the contradictions, but, instead, to see how we can embrace the contradictions as spiritual teachers. And while I do agree that there are disturbing parts of scripture, I have also found parts that are progressive and inspiring. I think the most important thing is to call out the disturbing parts of the Bible as disturbing and wrong, and highlight the loving passages and try to become a kinder, more compassionate person.
As far as looking at atheism, I don't really view it as an either/or scenario. One of my greatest spiritual teachers once showed me how the believer and the doubter are raging inside of me as I try to make sense of this life. My goal then becomes making peace between the belief and the doubt.
I hope this helps! Thanks so much for engaging in the conversation.

Atheist need to take a level approach to those leaving the ranks of a controlled religiosity hell bent (pun intended) on imposing bad ideas on everyone. If the people of this "church", being somewhat sarcastic, can make spaces where questioning one's reasons for their presence in this church, then they may have a shot. But, if like other institutions it is about the institution, then they lost the plot.

Why even include all the dogma. The book is quite clear what you "should and shouldn't do" with and about different peoples. Own them, beat them (as long as they dont die), stone them, banish them. Reinforced by the rock of the church... Peter, no wait, thats just what Jesus supposedly wanted. Paul made it quite clear to uphold the disgust for LGBT. So, how can you reconcile your "liberal interpretation" be anything but that? Isn't easier to just admit you dont believe what is professed to be "divinely inspired", especially when all the "moral" teachings are either not at all good or not even exclusive to the book? Sorry it gets frustrating to see people that would be a potential ally, but reinforcing unfounded beliefs. Especially when the people that are also reading from the same book (and arguably reading it for what it actually aays) want you silenced, at best.
