Just a question, If you clean the media, wicking strip and tower, does that not remove all the Biologicals from the surface? and will it take a few weeks again the re-establish?
Nice job Tyler.
Thanks for the video! I was under the impression that wicking strips had to be tossed after one use. Are you able to reuse them?
Hello Erin! Sorry for the late response, yes the wicking strips are reusable. We often get several years out of them before replacement
How much water do you need to dilute 34% H2O2 to 5%?
Hello Stephen! For these types of calculations it is best to use the equation C1V1=C2V2:
C1 is concentration 1
V1 is Volume 1
C2 is Concentration 2
V2 is concentration 2
If you have 34% peroxide, and wish to make 2 litres of 5% peroxide you just need to rearrange the equation and solve for V1:
(0.34)*(V1)=(0.05)(2)
V1 = (0.05)*(2)/0.34
V1 = 0.294 litres or 294 milliliters of peroxide in 2 Litres of water will give you 5% peroxide.
Hope this helps and happy growing!
Good information👍
Can Star San (Acid Sanitizer for surface Sanitation)? I use1/4 oz for 1 gallon of water. It is effective against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It is food safe sanitizer, I use to sanitize 500 ml beer bottles before bottling kombucha. This sanitizer is not to be used on surface like wood cutting board. I am wondering if it can be used for wicking media and media?
The wicking strips are first washed and rinsed to remove any old roots, algae, or leftover salts.
We typically use 3 - 5% hydrogen peroxide spray bottles to disinfect used wicking strips.
We have not used Star San in our growing operations but one of the ingredients is phosphoric acid. We use phosphoric acid in our irrigation lines for pH control but not for dipping wicking strips in them. We use it sparingly as it may alter the formulation of the fertilizer feed with the addition of more phosphorus.
This is great. I too, was under the impression the wicking strips were a one-and-done. Very glad to hear that is not the case! Question: Could the wicking strips be replaced with a biostrate or jute or some other biodegradable/compostable product? Recognizing it would need to be replaced each harvest. Thanks!
Great question, the wicking strip is designed to allow nutrients to flow into the rootzone of your crop. It is possible to use another type of material that has a high water holding capacity, similar to the wicking strip!
The vid indicates life expectancy of a wicking stip is several years. Question: What is the life expectancy of the matrix media?
Hi there, thanks for the comment. Our Matrix Media is guaranteed to last for continued, strenuous use for up to ONE YEAR. That said, professional growers will tell you they typically last 3 to 9 years; depending on crop variety and usage.
Been a while?
It sure has! We are excited to be back!
@@ZipGrowInc who’s the new owner went what’s the game plan
Красавчик👍😎
Hi. When should you clean the towers/matrix? How many times per harvest/transplant?
Thanks.
Hello Nuno! We try to clean the towers every 1-2 harvests depending on the crop and how bad they are, and a deep clean at least 2 or 3 times a year.
Thanks for watching!
Is this cleaning safe for aquaponics?
Hello Kurt,
As long as you rinse everything appropriately, hydrogen peroxide (Food grade) is typically safe for hydroponics as long as you dilute it enough. Some species of fish are more sensitive than others though so it is best to start with smaller amounts.
Thanks for watching!
What is the matrix media made of?
Hello Ben! Our media is constructed from recycled PET-1 (water bottles) without any BPA
Always sad when you see an educational channel get sold off to some corporation for some product commercials...
Hope you guys at least leave all the old content up like the nutrient deficiency video.
