Thanks for your very honest and highly detailed review! I also have the P8 with Apheta 3 cartridge and I’m extremely pleased with it. I’m certainly looking forward to your Part 2 review! I also like the way they implement their design principles, it turned me into a Rega nut for 8 months now.

Thanks Eric. The part 2 will be with an Apheta 2. I wish I could the 3! But there is part 3 coming with a non Rega cart as well!

Great insight on a very special table indeed. You seems to be interested in the engineering site of the beauty, and i will recommend you reading the Rega book. It's a great journey through out Roy G. life and approach in the HI-FI community, making he's first Rega Planet in a friends garage and so forth. Besides that, you get the Rega history, with their ups & downs. At least, you are given a great insight into the making of their products. Very interesting reading. I'm kind of in love with my P8/Apheta II combo, and as a Rega fan for decades, i couldn't imagine me spending money on another brand? In fact, i wen't from the RP8/Ania combo, to this new coming baby Naid (as u state). I cannot think of another TT in the price range, that even come close? Maybe the new MOFI Ultradeck+M can challenge the P8 (some told me), but i haven't heard it myself, so i couldn't tell? I'm 51 and know for a fact that, the P8 is NOT my end game TT, and one day i will end up buying the P10, but i think i'll wait to it get's on the user market for a fair price? Next cart for me must be the Apheta III, which iv'e heard is even better than the first ed. of Aphillions. The tip on the Apheta III, is in fact the tip from the Aphelion, turned 180 degrees for better tracking ability. That is pretty interesting. Should sound amazing, so i guess i'm in for a treat. Cheers from Denmark

I do love the engineering aspect of my Hifi components. I am an engineer by trade, so by nature (and thus habit) I want to get to understand the components both mechanically and electrically and discern what makes them tick! That's amazing to hear about the Aphelion. And yes, Id love to read the vibration measuring machine one of these days!

I purchased a Planar 8 as a possible replacement for my now ageing P9.It’s a great tt but sounded very ragged against my P9 but possibly more engaging.I found a could actually use the P9 ceramic platter on the Planar 8 , the centre hole is bigger but you can centre the platter with great care. This somewhat tidied the sound.I also thought that ditching the wall wart power supply for a regulated linear supply had great benefits when powering the Neo.I did miss the propulsive controlled bass I get with the P9 but the Planar 8 has a more balanced frequency response in my system.
Fitting an rb3000 to the Planar 8 would be interesting.I think I will need a Planar 10 to replace my P9.
These are just my opinions I thought I would share and not at all a criticism of the Planar 8 which is a fantastic tt and I doubt very much you could get a better tt at this price point.

Love the way you describe sound 👏

BTW, what do you think about the platter fitting on too the sub platter? If u look closely from above, you will notice a small gab(gabs), and you can in feel it when moving/touching the platter slightly from one side to another. It's not all locked and in place, so i can't stopping thinking about this being an issue? What's your take on that? I mean, if a platter is not centered, then everything is wrong, right?

    • @analogholic_reviews
      @analogholic_reviews  3 года назад

I did not notice the off-center or play issue you mentioned! The platter cannot be a tight fit onto the subplatter obviously as it has to be separable. But that's where good tolerance stacking in manufacturing comes in. If the platter isnt centered and allowed to move relative to the subplatter while it is spinning, then yes, you would not be able to control the flywheel effect and certainly would induce bearing noise and potentially damage it. I don't have the in my possession to check, but the Rega TTs I do have, dont have any play at all. Could that unit be defective?

Do the feet leave marks on furniture?
I mean, similar feet that use Sorbothane instead often leave ugly markings on the paintjob of furniture, so an isolation base needs to be used.
Only now I realize you're using a snooker table for reviews lol
    Nice touch! 👍

I am not sure if they’d leave marks or not as I have the table on an auralex isolation base 😆.

OK I can answer that my friend... No, santoprene does not leave marks.
Sorbothane will as it is a semi liquid material.

Great and detailed review. I own the P8 as well and agree will it all. Detail & precision are its signature and sometimes it may be a bit clinical. Goes well with a valve phono pre-amp to add a bit of colour. I have a few cartridges and my latest acquisition is the Hana that goes with the P8 like steak & chips. Thanks for sharing

@@analogholic_reviews Hi there! I actually have both SL and ML. Was very happy with the SL and a cleaning accident shopped the needle off. I am still having a bit of a palava to have this sent to the manufacturer for repair. So decided to buy the ML. Both are great and the ML better. I would go for the ML straight if budget allows as has a nuance usually seen in very expensive and exotic stuff. The SL is still great though but too light for the P8 and the weight will be pushed to the front all the way. You just barely can balance it. I had lots of cartridges, from mid to higher price and can say the ML is the best. It is a tough one to beat with less than several k euros.

      Hello and thank you 🙏!
I always used a mat and didn’t place it on glass. I used the stock felt mat, Funk Achromat and Herbies audio mat. I liked the the Funk mat the best. The stock was pretty good too, but kept sticking to the record due to static especially when playing 45s.
