  • Charming version of much loved Serenade by Russian-Chechen singer Sultan Baisultanov from Georges Bizet’s famous opera. There are several translations of this song from the French libretto - by Henry Coates, by Sherren Douglas and some more. I’ve decided however, to give a literal translation from Russian in subtitles. Otherwise it will not play with the singer’s expressions and will not make sense. Sultan Baisultanov was the leading tenor in Almaty’s Opera House for more then 30 years. Sadly, he died in 2012. I was one of his devoted followers. For years I was browsing internet in hope to find any of his recordings - all in vain. But finally, after many years of silence the first videos started to appear and I’m very happy to share them with you. Isn’t he great?
Sorry for the poor quality go the video. It is all that is available at the moment. This version of Serenade is quite unusual - much more energetic and vibrant than what we used to. This matches Sultan’s bouncy and sunny personality. He was an charmer, with his great sense of humour and warm heart.
