ANNA SCHNEIDER: The Greens? “Everyone against the AFD, that's not what the voters want”
The election of FPÖ politician Herbert Kickl as chancellor in Austria is causing discussion in German politics. CSU politician Alexander Dobrindt spoke of a “warning shot” and sees parallels with the failed black-green government in Vienna, which strengthened the FPÖ. The Greens, on the other hand, warn of “Austrian conditions” and call for greater cooperation between democratic parties in order to prevent a similar shift to the right in Germany. Critics such as WELT chief reporter Anna Schneider, however, see this as a strategy that fails to meet the wishes of voters. The outcome of the German federal election in 2029 could show whether the political center retains its ability to form alliances.
