This was a Thursday nighter - I remember watching it live. It was a great game that went to OT - it's been all but forgotten about because of the playoff classic these two played a year later.
i never understood why the Bolts never made it to the SB with soo much rich talent & great coaching. thanks for the video. i rather watch this than the rigged NFL we have today.
It's because for five straight seasons they had one of the worst defenses in NFL history. If their defense had merely been mediocre, they would have won at least two AFC championships and at least one Super Bowl.
These two teams with basically the same rosters played two OT games in back to back seasons at the Orange Bowl in Miami - this game in 1980 and the 1981 classic playoff game (played 1/2/82). San Diego won them both. Miami finally got their revenge in 1983 playoffs 34-13.
Indeed. They were actually lucky to win this game. I know of no team in NFL history that, over a six year time period (1980-1985), lost more games than the Chargers did *despite* scoring 24 or more points.
Don Shula kept Don Coryell out of the Hall of Fame for years. Shula never respected him because of key losses in playoff games. Only after Shula died did Coryell get in.
@@robbyled The 1994 Divisional Playoff game where Miamis PK missed a potential 49-yard FG at the last minute in San Diego that would've won the game for Dolphins. That game has been called by some the Epic in San Diego, a sort of 2nd-generation sequel to the classic Epic in Miami that occurred 13 years earlier in the old Orange Bowl.
David Roberts I choose to forget that 1994 game as I thought Miami was so out played and fortunate to have been in the game at all. 282 yards of offense to 466 for SD. I remember leading at halftime 21-6 as SD fans booed their team off the field. Booed because they knew they had so many opportunities but were blowing it in the Red Zone. I was feeling lucky but the luck would run out in the 2nd half
Chargers and Dolphins had many close games from 1977-1984. Three out of those six meetings went into overtime, with SD winning all three and all but one decided by a TD or less.
@@Jelperman yeah, now a days, they don't run it in hs, lol. There's not as many drags either. Drags and pops are terrific short yardage/ gl plays to run

Actually the playoff game was only 1 season later. It occurred during the 1981 season.
@@SS-th9wz actually it was in January or 82. The 3rd if memory serves me right.

@@SingleTax really? I was too young to understand this back then, but now I know why such a great team like the fins of the 80s didn't succeed.
@@clightning9703 I was referring to the Chargers. The Dolphins at least made it to the Super Bowl in '82 and '84.
@@SingleTax yea the Chargers too... can't believe they lost to the Bengals. they had a better chance of beating the 49ers.
@@SingleTax …..what years are you talking about? In 1979 they were #2 in defense

Back when the NFL had gorgeous colorful uniforms. Not ugly USFL uniforms.
Even the USFL had better uniforms than today.
I love watching the Chargers from this era

Nate Moore and Tony Nathan great players but non hall of famers and Don Shula made them great players in his own right.Like Dean Martin that's amore.

The Prequel
Harmonica indeed. Mia vs SD had a number of exciting games from the 70’s and 80’s
