I have always loved to listen to Johnny McEvoy since I first heard him performing at the Abbey Tavern back in 1965. I have a collection of most of his CD's. Thank you for this song. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland
The best song about the Titanic there is, wonderfully understated. Also, it is a charmingly anachronistic video accompanying the song (modern yacht, liner and trawler, tricolour flag etc). The man from Co Offaly deserves to be 'up there' in the panoply of stars for this alone.
Rob: The video has another very relevant significance to the Titanic; it was shot in Cork Harbour, the final port of call of that ship. At the start (for a milli-second, but repeated later) is a shot of the town of Cóbh (then called Queenstown) dominated by the cathedral, whence all Irish emigrants stood for the last time on Irish soil. Directly across the sound from Cóbh is the isle of Haulbowline, whose 18thC buildings are also to be seen in the video. Those buildings are now part of the Headquarters and main naval base of the Irish Naval Service. The video of the harbour looking South of Spike Island and the harbour mouth with the two now defunct coastal artillery forts, Fort Davis on the left and Fort Meagher on the Right. Spike Island, also a coastal artillery fort, is now a very popular visitor attraction.
Rob: Forgot to mention that Cóbh was the location of the first yacht club in the world, the building maybe the white one on the quay wall in the first short shot of the town (or it might be behind Johnny's head). It is now the location of the Sirius Arts Centre. (Sirius was the first powered ship that crossed the Atlantic; it had departed from Cork Harbour).
Nothing could sink her not even God own hand Mans pride can be his own downfall 1500 souls lost that fateful night in the North Atlantic freezing waters Rest in Peace
Today marks the 104th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic. Her collision with an iceberg, resulted in the loss 1,500 passengers and crew, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.
