  • In this video, Kelly investigates why her seedlings are not growing much at all. Is it the soil, the containers, the grow tent, or a combination of everything. Regardless, she still has fun working in the soil and enjoys the challenge the garden has to offer.

I stopped buying any soil from the stores. We use soil blockers and make our own sieved soil from our planters from the year before. Grow lights are you friend. Keep the light just one inch above the plants and raise as needed. Only water from the bottom. When the plants are about 2 inches tall and have there first set of true leaves and transplant into Solo cups. Been doing this for many many years and no problem with stunted plants,

The potting soil I've gotten the last few years has been junk. My starts were a disaster this year even though I upped the price I paid for the soil trying to get better quality.
I've had the best luck making my own soil with equal parts coco coir, perlite, and compost or worm castings. Even good compost is getting hard to find but I can make that.

Consistent bottom watering solves most my problems. God bless.

I have always found peat pots to be the thing that sucks up all the water and then holds onto it for far too long and then too quickly goes from wet to too dry. I find them frustrating. I am trying new systems this year but...my old system, using leaf compost mixed with cow manure compost (Black Cow, specifically) to be by far the best. Last year I bought some 'horse compost' from a guy who assured me it was composted...ha, more weeds than I have ever seen and to this day trying to eradicate them...the horror! I have now sworn off horse compost forever! So far so good this year, back to my original mix! So far so good.

I never had. Good result what beat pots however, your plants look like an nutritional problem. Check the soil.

If your seedlings are all leaning in the same direction the problem is normally light deprivation. spindly starts which are yellow instead of green, is an indication of the same problem.

Really strange that A LOT of YT gardeners I watch have seedling issues this year!
My tomatoes and peppers did so well, that 10 days after up-potting, they had to go outside (and in the ground) way too fast! They were massive and it was impossible to keep them healthy in solo cups...
So a 48 hr hardening off, days of 40mph winds and now WAY too much rain, I'm happy to say they've bounced back beautifully and are covered in blooms and some are setting fruit!
So far, I've had the best seed starting year (my 4th to do EVERYTHING I grow) so it's been wild to see even experienced gardeners having so many problems.
For seedlings with at least 2 true leaves, I collect urine and mix it to a 20 parts water to 1 part urine solution(10:1 works for established plants) and water them with it about twice.
Once they go out...epsom salts, egg shells, bone meal, and our compost get's me really nice growth and blooms!
    I hope your's bounce back!
    poor things...

Interesting! So glad you’re having a great year! I’m thinking they’ll bounce back, but they were pretty pitiful.😄 ~Kelly

There is something strange about this year. My tomatoes and peppers really struggled - still are. I feel like I'm so far behind where I was last year. It's May and I don't even have tomato plants in the ground yet..

Let’s hope both of ours bounce back! Mine don’t go in the ground for another week or so, but they’re gonna be tiny transplants. ~Kelly
